Brothers and Sisters Article Circus Magazine August 1973

Found this old Circus magazine pdf on line when I was searching for an article on Robin Thrower and thought some might enjoy it

I used to love Circus magazine when I was in my teens and read it religiously along with Rolling Stone. And Melody Maker from England when I could find it at the local News Stand that used to handle imports magazines.

I never read Circus but I subscribed to Creem magazine for several years when I was in my early 20's. It was good. Lester Bangs was their most prominent journalist and his character (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman) had a role in the film Almost Famous.

I use to read Circus magazine too. I remember Dickey being interviewed in Circus when he quit the Allman Brothers Band and put Great Southern together in late 1976.
But just two years later, late summer 1978, Dickey was on good terms with Gregg again and Gregg, Butch and Jaimoe joined Dickey on stage at a Great Southern concert in Central Park and they decided to record another album and do a big tour in 1979.
Much of that 1973 Circus magazine story on the Allman Brothers seems to be the beginning of a cycle that began after Duane died. A cycle that saw them loose it, get into booze, drugs and withdrawing from each other and putting the band on pins and needles then find their way back together with smiles and positive energy and determination and new albums then go through it again and the cycle continues.
They voted to sack Jaimoe in 1980 then 20 years later they voted to sack Dickey. Butch said after getting Dickey out of the band it was back to the way it was when Duane was alive for the first time since Duane died. The cycle of good to bad was finally over. But it seems they continued to have their ups and downs, just not as extreme and it seemed the tension apparently was between Gregg and Butch.
With Gregg saying things like " We are going to record another album and do it without Butch Trucks if necessary" and when asked why Queen of Hearts was rejected for Brothers and Sisters, Gregg said " Oh that was a long time ago and I don't want to get anything started but his initials are Butch Trucks" there seemed to be tension between those two that replaced all the drama they claimed was the situation in the band after Duane died and most of it was coming from Dickey.
Well they are my favorite band by far but they would have been better off and the fans would have too if brother Duane had avoided that truck.
It was a huge blow. Duane's energy and command of the band was what was making them so exciting to see live. It was a huge loss and a big fat downer to the band and the fans when he died. Wish Duane had lived!!
The band was never the same after Duane. Jaimoe agreed and about 2015 Gregg said it too. Dickey said loosing Duane was such a tragedy and huge loss they had to either grow another arm or quit. Dickey credited Chuck Leavell for helping them get on their feet again but it didn't last.

Speaking of Brothers & Sisters, Trouble No More, the ABB cover band, at one point was scheduled for March 24-25 shows at the Beacon & Orpheum Theatres in NYC & Boston to mark the 50th year of the album’s release
