I have bought Mojo since edition #1 which makes 286 I have.

Around 100 seem to have been Beatles specials while there has been no coverage, album reviews aside, of many of my favourite artists including Govt Mule and Derek Trucks.

However, this issue contains only the second ever spread on the ABB. It's eight pages long but over half of that is photographs, and ones with which you will be well familiar.

The piece is inspired by Gregg's death and was written by Alan Light who collaborated with him on his autobiography and from which he has probably borrowed heavily.

All the old, familiar tales of the band's formation and early years are included and take up almost all of the piece. In fact, everyone who came after the original band is dismissed as " ....transfusions of new blood, most crucially guitarist Warren Haynes."

MOJO is a fine magazine and even in this edition there are good reads - a Stevie Winwood interview, a six-page spread on The Watersons (MOJO doesn't usually "do" Traditional Folk), a piece by Tony Allen on Art Blakey's Three Blind Mice album, a lavish review of a forthcoming 7 CD Fairport Convention Box set etc.

But they also overlook too many important artists - of which the ABB is a classic example - so that, when they do eventually cover them, it tends to be a superficial retread of a story which will be over-familiar to their fans.

I would suggest that you don't expend too much energy in seeking this out and aren't lured in by the sight of "The Allman Brothers - Triumph and Tragedy " cliché headline on the cover.

Thanks for the heads-up Gordon ... I buy Mojo sporadically - usually at an airport for something to read in flight - and I take heed of your warning ... but I will seek out this copy because I am a sucker for all things ABB ... even if I have heard all the stories before ...

The current issue of Classic Rock Magazine also has a Gregg Allman feature.
