A new version of the plugin that had the vulnerability has been installed and logging in restored.

Sorry for the issue and hopefully they fixed it for real this time, they have made several attempts that failed!

Cheers,

Rowland

So nice to have the site back up!  Thank you for continuing to operate this oasis from the usual social media landscape!

Please do not take this as a gripe or a complaint.  I am still experiencing a multi-multi-step log-in process.  I'm wondering if my account has been hacked.  Typical log-in goes like this:

1.  User name

2. Password

3.   Are you a Robot? - 1st time (identify squares with bicycles, bridges, motorcycles etc)

3 b.  Another chance at identifying squares with particular items (did I get something wrong the first time?)

4.  Red text:  An error occurred ...

5.  User name (again)

6. Password (again)

7.  Identify squares with particular objects (again) - verify

Seriously - is everyone having to do all of these things or are the cyber ghouls picking on me?  Have I been hacked?  Why?

My situation is in the upper right corner it used to say "Members" or something like that. Now it says "Restricted Content".

When I click there, I get asked to log in with user name and password. It recognizes me. I told the site to do that a long time ago.

I do that I have to go through the same process. But now it says "An error has occurred", something about the page was cached, whatever that means.

But it lets me in.

I don't find it that inconvenient.

I understand about the clicking on pictures thing. That is very annoying.

The thing I really find odd is it making me clicking on the Restricted Content thing.

But hey, it works. A few extra clicks is all.

Hi all - we were using Google's "Silent" ReCaptcha which uses some secret Google magic to figure out if you're a bot or not, but it was not letting legitimate people in.  I switched to what should be the simple "click here to say you're a human" one but it does seem to be throwing up the "pick all the fire hydrant picture" things a lot.  I've seen it too.  I will do some more digging and see if I can find a happy medium.  Life was simpler "back in the day!"  Thanks for your patience.

Cheers,

Rowland

Everyone appreciates your work Rowland. You obviously know a heck of a lot about this stuff and are good at it.

To Stephen's question, that is on my computer too. It says nobody online. Always says that. Even though if I am on then obviously one person is. 😉  No big deal but I noticed this a long time ago too.

I enjoy the Restricted Content thing.  Makes me feel that I'm privy to some classified $hit.  If I WERE a robot - I'd probably be able to navigate the flaming hoops better than as a mere mortal.  And again, those pictures are too damned small to accurately view with 66 year old eyes.  It's all good, though.

Restricted Content!  Still going through so many steps to log-in!  Rowland - do you have any classified documents hidden here?  😉

... because this "Mar a log-in" process is killin' me!  😉

I think I found and fixed the issue that was causing the "Page was probably cached try again" error on logging in.

I added the URL of the login page to the "don't cache" list.

The Google ReCaptcha is still there, will play with that next.

Fun, fun!

Cheers,

Rowland

It is taking me as many as 9 - 10 attempts to log on!  So many GRAINY and OUT OF FOCUS - TINY pictures asking me to select squares with bicycles, stairs, motorcycles and busses!   These images are IMPOSSIBLE for anybody to see!

All jokes aside - why is it so difficult to access this site these days?

I have a very strange problem.  I can log in but I cannot start a new topic in Anything Goes.  Trying brings me back to the log in screen.  However, it appears I can start a new topic in all the other Forum categories.  The normal request for topic title appears.  I am trying to start a topic about the 50th anniversary of Watkins Glen.  If you cannot fix my problem, could you at least start a thread under the 50th Anniversary- Watkins Glen title?  Ultimate Classic Rock is streaming the entire ABB performance.

A quick follow-up.  In recent post listings I found that some one had already started a Watkins Glen 50th Anniversary topic in Anything Goes.  So I added my response about the performance link.  However, when I go to Anything Goes, this topic does not show up even though I can see in the sidebar that I now have a post listed.  With my limited knowledge of computers I think that there is some sort of cache that is screwing up the works.  This seems more likely as I almost entirely visit the site to checkup on Anything Goes.  Appreciate any other insights on the matter.

@rowland - I never had the recaptcha problem logging in - I just always have to click on 'I am not a robot'.   The problem I have been having is I have to log in twice every time - the first attempt always gives the error message saying 'something must have been cached'.   Is there any way to get around this?   Thanks.

@sang Hi Sang - Yeah, I've seen the same problem.  It's baffling me.  I noticed if I reload the page before logging in it works.  I added the page to the list of "do not cache" pages but so far no joy.  There are a lot of performance optimizations built into the cacheing code so I'm betting there's something in that mess that is causing this.  I'll have another go at it and maybe even ask for help from the host - which is as big a leap as a guy asking for directions 🙂 !

Thanks for your patience,

Rowland

Stephen's back door trick works for me.  I don't even bother with going through the "title page" anymore.

Hah, the back door through the Guest Book is brilliant :).  There's a login form built into the Guest Book code that displays if you're not logged in.

I've submitted a support request to the provider of the main login page as I've checked settings and the ReCaptcha should not be appearing on that page.  If they can't fix it, I'll replace their login with a custom one using the same idea as the Guest Book code.

The fun never ends Smile

OK - I think I found the problem child.  A performance plugin, for some reason, was adding the ReCaptcha to the login and password reset pages, even though those forms themselves explicitly said "no ReCaptcha."  It appears to be gone from those pages now.  Fingers crossed!!

@rowland I was wondering if you can help me.

I have to continuously login almost everyime I come to read or post on the forum.

Any idea why I don't stay logged in?

Thanks in advance for your help

Hi Bill - the login cookie does expire after some time has elapsed. Check the "Keep Me Logged In" box on the login form and it will take longer to expire.

Login sessions have an impact on performance and if we don't expire them, the database will grow and grow with unexpired sessions - that's why they don't last forever :).

I have to login every so often too!

Cheers,

Rowland

Thanks Rowland, I do check the keep me logged in box but for some reason I still have to login almost evertime I visit the site and post which can be multiple times a day. Also have to login twice due to the cached page message.

Not a big deal but wanted to see if there was anything I could do be reduce the # of times I have to login.

Also the site takes a long time to load no matter what I click on so not sure why this happens. Never had these issues in the past

@rowland I'll echo what Bill said, the site has been really slow to load for the past week or so. Thanks for all the work you do to keep this site alive!

Hey guys - yes, the site has had intermittent slowdowns.  It started while I was on vacation (thanks Murphy!).  We added memory to the server which helped but it is occasionally running out of memory again.  There are a lot of "plugins" (add-ons) to give this site all its features and they are updated - mainly to get the latest security fixes - almost daily.  Something definitely changes, we've been quite stable for four years.  I have been trying various ways to figure out which plugin is the memory hog but it's not easy to narrow down.  Some of the tools to monitor things actually caused a massive slowdown!  Unfortunately the only way to really find the culprit is to disable some aspect of the site and run for a couple of days without it and see if we stay within memory limits.  Kind of crummy because that means part(s) of the site will come and go!  Anyway, it has to get fixed so I'll keep sleuthing.

Cheers,

Rowland
