Hey there, Backbone69 gets requested a lot on Radio HTW. Not sure if y'all realize that's Duane Betts' band ... and that their wonderful lead singer, Chris Williams, was killed in a car accident last summer. The CD isn't available via cdnow.com, but we're hoping to be able to get some to have available to you. Take care and know that you are loved ... Lana

I had to leave early while watching the Super Bowl at a friends house and found a radio station that was carrying the game. It was WLAC. Now that was a radio staion back in the day. I listened to that staion every night as a young guy. Leave the radio on all night. Otis, Sam and Dave, Marvin Gaye, Aretha, Booker T and The MGs, etc...It is in Nashville and you could pick up the signal all over the south, at night. Best radio station ever, in my book. This was before free form FM rock stations. I miss the free form format. It only lasted a few years, but it left quite an impression on this listener. It was a good time to be alive and young. Now, the only radio I listen to is RHTW. Commercials make me want to scream. Not to mention the really sorry programming. I can remember hearing the Fillmore version of Whipping Post being played on the radio, during the day. On a commercial rock and roll station. The 70's were great....EAPFP

Radio Waves - Someone earlier mentioned WNCW. Also Try www.wncw.org and WDVX - www.wdvx.com. WDVX broadcasts out of a trailer north of Knoxville and plays primarily bluegrass. WNCW is across the board like underground radio in the late sixties and early seventies. Great station broadcasting from Isothermal Community College in Spindale, NC. It is "the" Isothermal College of the USA! Thanks to everyone who has been so kind as to trade shows with me. Everyone's kindness amazes me! PEACE TIM

Old Coot, I believe The Derek Trucks Band has signed with Columbia Records. This is according to information I have gathered from the Derek List, from people who have spoken with band members. Thought you may be interested. Take care, Ryan

very honest allen and we all have to deal with getting that daily bread, eh? i gotta wonder, isn't it like a snake eating its tail? we only get requests for freebird so that's all we play, so all that's heard is freebird so that's all that's requested. (all freebird all the time!) the mass culture needs LCD to get the numbers. the new torture game show is a hit so lets put four new torture game shows on the air. (we're just giving the people what they want!) but now it will be nude torture game shows! its retroevolution. let me hear you say devo! i still feel something's right around the corner.

As a guy that's been in radio for 10 years now, here is my .02. Radio has changed by leaps and bounds in the last few years. It's all about cutting costs and making money. Technology allows the big guys like Clear Channel, INfinity, and Cumulus to have one jock doing 4 or 5 or more shows on different stations across the country. We jocks get just as tired of playing the same old songs over and over. 99% of the requests we get though are for the tried and true tunes like Freebird, and Whipping Post. The reason we keep playing them is that it works. There are very few radio stations that will go out on a limb to break new music these days. There is simply too much $$$ at stake. You guys on this board are a little more educated and passionate about your music than the average Joe riding in his car. Thank God for stations like the ones ya'll have listed and for a station like KGSR in Austin. Radio will never get back to the free form days. Playing the hits isn't terribly exciting, but it works. The big companies are all run by bean counters and stockholders....not radio guys. It's sad. But...Clear Channel signs my checks and they ain't bouncing ....yet.

tom, you keep ragin' against the machine bro! i remember Wolfman jack raisin' hail because on the "oldies" stations the nationally researched playlist was about 200 songs that were played over and over, his point being there were 8,000 "Top 40" records for that era, 7,800 of which were never getting played. i teach middle school and occasionally i try to stir up da chilluns about this cultural hegemony. they just don't care. they are passive and accepting of whatever they are handed through the video culture. i'll keep trying to subvert them by playing ABB, DTB, PHIL, mule, HTW radio. are ya wit me brothers and sisters?

Hey Sistabluz, Don't know if you're aware of this, but all the way at the bottom of the Menu column is a box called: Who's Online. It lets you know how many people are here, whether on not you're logged in, and how many private messages you have. Hope this helps. If not, I bet Rowland will 🙂 Take care and know that you are loved ... Lana

Suggestion Rowland about the private messaging. Don't know if it's even possible, me being a low-tech redneck, but it would be GREAT if we'd receive some sort of notice that we've gotten a P.M. and it seems once you've got an answer and reply again using the original two messages it goes no further. Re: radio I'm lucky as to have 3 classic stations, two of which play ABB frequently and not just Ramblin' Man!! But usually I've got tapes in from the massive collection I have received from my sweet famabbly. 🙂 Love y'all, looking forward to seeing some of you at GABBA. Peace, Carole

Radio????? what is that? Is that the thing above the skinny slot I put CD's in? Every time I turn it on, this awful noise comes out. Lately it appears to be largely young females, I can't tell if they're cats or humans, but female I know. If I listen real close, it has a faint resemblence to music, but then I go, no, no way.... So how do all those angry and depressed felines get in my dashboard?

A giant AMEN to you Tom S! After working in a radio station a few years ago I decided that one of my most important possessions was the tape player in my car. A few months ago I decided to listen to our local "classic" radio station to see if they were playing anything good. I heard the same Rolling Stones song (Satisfaction) followed by the same Pink Floyd song (Comfortably Numb) at 6:10 four days in a row.I figured that was enough and went back into my own music collection. To the credit of the radio station that I worked for, after the ABB show in Greenville, SC in 1996 we were swamped with ABB requests. Our managers thought it was in their best interest (and they were right) to honor their requests.

I believe the whole corporate thing is going to come tumbling down - its only a matter of time. We have been lucky in the DC area to have first the original WHFS and then the now active WRNR. WRNR does all the things the corporate boys are afraid of. They have shows for local artists, interview bands (like Govt Mule) when they come to town, and about 90% of their airtime is freeform music so the dj has lots of say - especially the graveyard shift. They're on the web - check em out!
