Karen (Big Six Peach Head), Aren't you from the Six Nations? Jack, the Cates were a very good band. I saw then open for the Outlaws, I think, at Shippensburg State in Pa. back in my college days. Their Asylum records are collector's items-if you've got 'em, hang on to 'em. I'm pretty sure they put out a new record fairly recently-you might want to check the record reviews at gritz.com. I'm pretty sure they reviewed it not too long ago. That's gritz.NET. Sorry about that.

Growing up in Toronto in the late 60's ,we saw a lot of Rompin Ronnie Hawkins and his then back up band ,the Hawks. The southern touch would come from Ronnie and Levon ,of course. Absoutely one of the best shows I ever had the luck to catch was the Dylan/Band tour in '74.My sister scooped 8th.row tix by a mail-in lottery. The Band did a set,Dylan did a set then they did a set together.Stunning night of music.I remember they had the stage set up with old furniture and tiffany lamps and it looked like a big old hippie living room.Levon had his old wooden drum set and they had a second set of traps and I think it was Beak ( Manuel) who played 'em.They spent a lot of that night jumping around on various instruments, amazing skill .Garth is from the town I've called home since '71 and Manuel and Danko were from small Southwestern Ontario towns within a hour's drive.Robbie is originally from the Six Nations Reserve . Have a read through This Wheels On Fire, a sad and funny story with a lot of similarities to Midnight Riders. On a Band related note, anybody here a fan of the Cate Brothers Band? I have 3-4 of their albums, twin brothers with the drummer ,Terry Cagle, being Levon's nephew I believe. He played a bit with the post RR Band .Have not heard anything of the Cates in years.Levon played a bit with them as well I think . Before I go, Happy Birthday to BO.The Driving Force behind the original 6 and the man most responsible for the Brotherhood aspect of ABB.

Music from the big pink is one of the greatest recordings of music to ever go down as far as I am concerned. I was wondering when looking at the calender for the ABB. if I am not going to the right place to see the gig sites. I see the dates and citys but no name of the place the band is playing. Do I need to go to a different place on the web site to get that info?

finsky, I'm with Goliath. It's great to hear your educated opinions again. There ain't too many people who know as much about the music biz as you. Great to have you back posting. And one of those is Goliath.

I think the Band did the finest version of "I Shall Be Released" yet recorded on "Music From Big Pink." Talk about giving you chills. Was that Danko or Manuel singing on that tune? Can't remember, whether it's Rick or Richard he just sings his heart out.

Hi y'all. Hope everyone is having a great day. All this Band talk...I saw the band open for Crosby, Stills, & Nash during the 1985 summer tour. (please note that I could have the year of the summer tour off by a year or 2...that's just the way it went back then) March 4, 1986, Richard Emanuel sadly hung himself in a motel in Winter Park, Florida. I felt so fortunate to have seen the 'reunited' Band when I did. I caught 6 shows that summer. What a great combo-The Band & CSN!On a happier note...all you GABBA's, have a great time. If anyone would care to kidnap me, I will go quite willingly.

Finsky, if there is a finer vocal performance in rock music than Tears of Rage, I have yet to hear it. Divine is just about right. Cried like a baby when I heard Richard had hung himself. And Levon Helm singing...got to love it. Virgil Kane is the name .....EAPFP

It makes no diff'rence where I turn I can't get over you and the flame still burns It makes no diff'rence, night or day The shadow never seems to fade away And the sun don't shine anymore And the rains fall down on my door Now there's no love As true as the love That dies untold But the clouds never hung so low before It makes no diff'rence how far I go Like a scar the hurt will always show It makes no diff'rence who I meet They're just a face in the crowd On a dead-end street And the sun don't shine anymore And the rains fall down on my door These old love letters Well, I just can't keep 'Cause like the gambler says Read 'em and weep And the dawn don't rescue me no more Without your love I'm nothing at all Like an empty hall it's a lonely fall Since you've gone it's a losing battle Stampeding cattle They rattle the walls And the sun don't shine anymore And the rains fall down on my door Well, I love you so much It's all I can do Just to keep myself from telling you That I never felt so alone before -The Band

I don't know the actual details to Manuel's death, but I do know that he hung himself. His singing on songs like Whispering Pine is divine. One of the great vocalists in rock music, although not many seem to care. Goliath, if you enjoy my rants, I shall keep going! The Robbie Robertson thing really hits a nerve... watching his VH1 Behind the Music made me almost vomit. Like I said before, what he did with the Basement Tapes REALLY annoys me. If his heart was in the right place, he would reissue it like it was meant to be done in the first place. Here is an important piece of rock history, a course on American Music 101 through the eyes & ears of guys that KNEW the music, & he tarnishes it due to his ego. You can really hear why Dylan & the Band are so unique, as they understood the music done by the likes of Charley Patton, Jimmy Rodgers, & etc. Bluegrass, blind musicians, railroads, & carnivals. Timeless.

I just received an update from Pollstar for the Derek Trucks Band. Looks like they will open for the ABB/P and F shows on 7/2 and 7/3. Sounds like a good lineup to me 🙂

Hello All, Hope everyone is doing well. I don't mean to sound dark or gloomy, but all this talk about The Band made me think about this. Isn't it true that Richard Manuel took his life after a show with the Gregg Allman Band? This doesn't mean a thing, I just thought I remembered hearing that. Hope everyone has a great time at GABBA this weekend...Peace...Neil.
