I think the original lineup is untouchable from anyone, ever. Comparing to that just seems silly when you lsten to the absolute magic on the old recordings.
That old stuff is to me in a league that will never, ever be touched again. Is the new ABB good? They are very good. Dickey Betts is very good. Would some of the magic come back with him in the band now? I personally doubt it, not due to his musical ability, but due to the chemistry of that old magic is gone and it is indeed 30 years later. That is life and evolution. Humpty Dumpty can't be glued back togethor, unfortunately, due to fate and change. It is depressing to see the Beacon run bring out the naysayers each year, but it shows the depth of emotion the original line up brings out in us. I sense bitterness that is useless maybe???
i'm interested in examples of the overhandedness/overproduction of Warren on HTN. He seems to have no problem finding friends to work with whether it be with the Bros. or the Mule. It doesn't seem like that would happen if they knew he would be overproducing. That being said, he's got his fingerprints all over this incarnation...and it's tremendous. Definitely get a sense of layers sometimes, but for the most part it seems like HTN is done with a sense that the tunes are to represent the live feel. i'm not a musician, but i love the fact that Warren is slamming me from the left and Derek counter punches from the right...so effing cool.
Not to mention, the much needed shot in the arm to Gregg in terms of songwriting.
It's so cool to have new studio compositions!!
I can understand how some people get upset when folks compare the current band to the classic lineup with Duane and Dickey, because that band holds a very sacred place in all our hearts. However, the new album is very good and the band is playing at an incredibly high level. There aren't many other bands, especially nowadays, that can match up with what the ABB is doing right now. Maybe people reach for the obvious comparison with the original Allman Brothers because they have run out of superlatives to describe the current group and want to pay the highest compliment possible.
Sooooo glad the ABB is apparently on fire again and changing up the set lists so much- really a first. That says something about what they're trying to do for us and the band-- have a good time laying down some good music for a "good bunch".
Stopped by Hospitality Suite last night to say hello, although I didn't have tix for ABB show. Nice to see alot of friends from last year. Met some new ones as well, and its always great to put names and faces together.
Going back tonight, and will got to the show as well.
I did go to see Oteil and The Peacemakers at BB King's Club, and they put on a show that absolutely A-May-Zen! They are very much worth your time if you have the chance to see them. I'll post pictures and comments on Oteil's site soon.
Can't wait for tonight's show...I heard they played Layla last night....can I hope they will play it two nights in a row?
Mitch
Not really sure I understand what you mean by closed family. I have not seen a new member get squashed in the GB ever. If anything I think we are a pretty open community. You seem to be upset at something or someone. In any event thanks for your input.See we can be nice:)
AMEN!!!!
To both NYPeachhead & MysticDancer.
You're both right on!

been a lurker for all too long. now i must jump into the "fray". my "credentials" for jumping into the "fray" (since this board is "all too chummy" and is "limited to 'HTW' insiders")(the board tends to jump on newcomers)- i have been a fan since the early Florida days (i am 50 years old)(i was at the Ludlow Garage in Cincinnati when the ABB played there)(i was at the "Mar y Sol" festival in Puerto Rico, how many on this board know that the ABB played in Puerto Rico???) i was at the fillmore east/west. i am a professional musician and i have played with many of the groups that the ABB have played with over the last 30 years. the current debate over the "old" ABB versus the "new" ABB is "senseless. life changes, bands change. we all wish that duane was still alive, that berry was still alive, that we could now be listening to the original ABB 30 plus years down the road. WHAT A BAND THAT WOULD BE!!!! but, alas, that was not to be. for various reasons certain band members became involved in drugs and alcohol. towards the "gregg supporters" - do you forget that gregg turned "state's evidence" during certain investigations? towards the "dickey supporters" - do you forget that dickey was drunk a lot of times?" as a native of asheville, NC i have played with warren over the years. warren is not duane and derek is not dickey. the old ABB lives on only with our recordings. the new ABB is NOT anything like the old ABB. warren has taken control of the new ABB. is this "good/bad?". it is neither- it is just different. oteil is not "berry" (long live berry). warren/derek can not even come close to the magic of "duane/dickey" (long live duane/dickey"). the ABB of the 70s (long live the 70s ABB) cannot even come close to the ABB of 2003. that being said- "thank God for the ABB 2003!!!!" i always thought/think that "family took/takes care of family". should dickey be playing with the ABB? hell yes!!!!! should gregg and butch "kiss and make up with dickey?" hell yes!!!! after all, it is the "brothers band". is "HTN" the cd that this board is gushing over? no way. it is another cd that marks the ABB. is it the "best thing since sliced bread?" no way. it is an "overhanded/overproduced" cd, typical of warren haynes. is it a "welcome cd?" hell yes!!! but only because it is the first in years and years and years. now this board can discuss my posting and the "closed" family of this board can get all excited and post their comments. the fact remains- "HTN" is a new cd from the ABB. YEA!!!!!!! it is an average cd "BOO!!!!!"
Hey Gb. I am definately not going to jump on the negative bandwagon. I say stop comparing this lineup w/ whoever and just enjoy them because they are ON FIRE!!!!
Why is it we always find the need to compare a good thing with something from the past. It happens in music, it happens in sports. I mean Kobe Bryant is great but he is no Jordan. WHo cares. This lineup is better then Jack and Dickey but not better then Dickey and Warren. WHO CARES.
Are the Allmans kickin ass every night? YES
Are we privledged after 34 years to still have this great band around and playing 13 dates at the Beacon. YES
Does Gregg voice sound stronger then it has been in years. YES!
Am I happy that Dickey has Great Southern and we still have the oppurtunity to see him as well. YES
I am happy to be an Allman Bros. fan. YES!!!!
Just enjoy the music folks and keep the goood vibe alive. Thats it from me on this thread.
Am I happy to be part of this awesome extended family. You bet your @$$!!!!!!!!!!!!
Peace y'all. Have a fine weekend. SMILE:)

"A Change is Gonna Come"?
"Into the Mystic"??
"Layla"???
This is gonna be a great, great ABB year....!
>> I challenge any band from any era to match the 2003 ABB. No one in their right mind could find fault with this line up.
THAT is ABSURD!!!
Better than the Almans of '70-'73, huh?
What?
Did you forget about Duane ..about Dickey?
And if you wanna go OUTSIDE the Allmans, as ws suggested..you're gonna have a HARD TIME convincing ANYBODY that the 2003 Allman Brothers are better than the Jimi Hendrix Experience...Cream...The Who...Led Zeppelin...just to name FOUR.
I absolutely love the new CD - HTN. I've been listening to the songs live for quite some time and was currious about how I would like the studio versions. I am very impressed and excited.
"BEST SINCE PEACH?" I think so for at least one reason. No "filler" or "clunkers" as I have heard people say and it is true. There are songs on Brothers & Sisters and nearly every other studio album sice that I like better than some on HTN. But since Eat A Peach there have been songs on every album that I tend to skip over. Some I've come to like more over the years and I don't really dislike any of them but I may rather hear the next song. NOT SO WITH HTN. It is all Great. I have favorites:
Old Before My Time
High Cost
Desdemona
Heart of Stone
Man I could list em all I guess but no desire to skip any of them and that alone makes it as good if not better (for me) than anything since Peach.
Complaints? Naah, too hard to think of any but I am curious about the ending to Woman Accross the River. Live it has such a dramatic and cool ending and instead on the studio version it fades out. I wish Warren would tell us why just because I am curious.
Also I have heard comments about separating Warren & Derek (Left & Right). Haven't they always separated the 2 Guitars? I was sure they did with DA & DB. Anyway what makes me curious here is that I believe I heard that Warren is left & Derek is right. That seems backwards to me. As you look at the stage Derek is left & Warren is right. Seems like you would like to have it the same when you face your stereo.
Pretty minor things to be curious about. This is dam good material and should be getting some air time on the radio.
My 2 cents
The original ABB was and still IS unstoppable.
Keep the reviews coming. 😎
I noticed that some of th set lists show "Who's been talk'n" Can someone tell me if that is the "who's been talk'n" from the Howlin Wolf London Sessins album that has Clapton, Winwood and the Rolling Stones rythem section as back up? Kick ass arrangement. Does anyone know if that is what they have been playing?
2 tix for 3/22 in lower balcony, row D, seats 27 & 29. Meet me in Blondies, 212 W. 79th St between 5:00 and 7:30. I'll have an ABB hat on w/the Peach truck from the EAP album. Respectfully, Jeff
What's going on tonight for after hours shows? I was too late to get in on the DTB show, so what else is happening? I'd love to catch a late night sit in by one of the boys.
Oh, good. Some of us have decided that bringing the negative comments back is a good idea! How nice!

Heading into the Big Apple in a few hours. Can't wait!
