First gotta thank Beverly, Nic and Pam, Rev Tim and Mike for the wonderful time in Chicago down the road with our wonderful band. From Midway Airport to my Hotel cost $1.50 on the train off to a great start in Chicago. The train let me off at State and Lake and there was the Chicago with the huge sign The Allman Brothers Band. So I had my focal point and found my Hotel a scant 5 blocks away right on the Chicago River looking out at the Lake. Great view for the Cruzpro. Made me feel so right at home all that water. Met up with Beverly on the elevator looking for me great timing and we were off to the Berghoff:) Nice dinner and time to meet the group at the bar. Everybody was keyed up and Beverly handed out cd's to alot of people. Spread those jams girl:) Rev Tim was spreading his unique style of love to all and we partied till the show started with Tiny Universe at 7:30. I did notice the old people doing the ushering but they gotta make a check too:) I thought all in all besides being just the most beautiful place I'd ever been in security was very lenient. They did ask me to open my cigarette pack to show them any joints I alas didn't have:( They found some in one frinds pack and just took them (for evidence) and let him in no problem. Jointless but not busted. Tuesday was wonderful but Wednesday was special. The boys were so on that one time at the end of a song Warren shouted Whoo Hoo and then gave us his great big THANKYOU:) At the end of anothe Butch flung his stick above his head to show his excitement. They were on fire. Yes I noticed the excellant play from Derek on lead. His fingers were doing a dance and we were getting some incredible music. The last three songs Tuesday as the couple got up and left in front of us were Dreams, Post and the incredible Blue Sky MJ. Mike said they played like 5-6 minutes and did everything but start singing. I really loved the ending. Again Wednesday the crowd and the band had alot of energy and it does show. Thanks again to Beverly for all the shows, to Nic, Rev Tim, Mike,Eric, Eric for the good company at Miller's Pub. Ate in two resturants in Chicago, one was over 100 years old and the Miller over 50 years old. Ernie Bigwindy your review was the best:)

Hey Topdroog & BigWindy, Ever considered submitting something to HTN magazine...nice writing! BigWindy - I was LMAO! TopDroog - I especially liked your descriptions of Derek's new "guitar lick" this leg of the tour: "At one point Derek is sliding triads around . . . creating lead runs with chords . . . and a peek over at Gregg shows him staring at Derek with his head cocked, and his mouth hanging open just a bit. Magic." I too witnessed this in Detroit! I've been looking for the words to describe it. One thought came to mind - it sounded like a WWII fighter plane screaming down in flight to lower altitudes. Gregg started chuckling in Detroit when Derek played this set of chords with his slide. It was a great moment to see Gregg - with a big ol' grin on his face! I think all of us in the audience that noticed it got a big kick out of it as well. Derek or Warren (Oteil, Mark - OK the whole band) always have a new lick for the knowledgable fan to notice - it's what keeps us coming back for more! Gotta love it! JNB

Last nite here in Chi-town, there was a REVIVAL at the Chicago Theatre. As my buddies (Danny+ JarJar) and I were on our way we saw a Woman Across the River. It was Layla, that Black Hearted Woman heading SouthBound on her Rocking Horse. As Danny yelled out Good Morning Little School Girl, who was to appear but the Hoochie Coochie Man. That cat, He Done Somebody Wrong, so I told Danny to Stand Back. Well Danny, he has been in trouble before and he certainly don't want any Trouble No More. We turn the corner at State and Lake and who do we see, Melissa. She looks terrible and we ask whats up Melissa? Been livin hard says she.........it's The High Cost Of Low Livin......we know where she's been. Hangin' with Liz Reed..........then she tells us she has had a bad case of the Come and Go Blues and a bout with an Istrumental Illness.........what a trip!!! The ABB had the stew cookin last nite.......thanks for coming back to the Chicago Theatre......EAPFP

I posted the set list earlier, and promised more details later. Well, here they are . . . The central question is, what is good, what is excellent, and what is phenomenal? A whole auditorium of people will watch the same show and have different opinions. From what I hear of the first night (Tue.), this would have been a good year to try to make both nights. Alas, I'm happy with what I got. I'd rate last nights show as follows - setlist, good. Performance, excellent, and the guitar interplay between Derek and Warren, phenomenal. This isn't really a review, just some random notes, in case you haven't noticed. For you ladies (or guys, hey, to each his own) who think that Gregg is a sexy hunk, if you had been at last night's show and were sitting on Gregg's side of the stage, you would have been treated to a bit of eye candy when Gregg changed his shirt midway through the 2nd or 3rd tune. But, enough of my aberrant fantasies . . . in a few recent reviews I've seen, there has been mention of how "Derek blew Warren Away." Well, if you remembered to bring your stopwatch with you last night, and clocked all of the solos, Derek may very well have come out ahead, but that's speaking of quantity. In between my last ABB concert (last summer at the Chicago Theater) and this one, I've been to my first Mule show, and my first DTB show. So I've now seen both of them when they "work alone." My collection of live shows for each act has also grown considerably. For me, the strength of the current incarnation of the ABB rests squarely on the relationship between Warren and Derek. To put it simply, it's arrived. In 2001, it was on the way, in 2002 you could catch glimpses on the horizon, it would stop by for a visit, etc., but in 2003, it's here in full force. Being two excellent guitarists in their own rights, they have always shined when it's "their turn" to take a solo . . . but for my ears, it's the interplay between the two, not what they do when they under the spotlight (although that of course is excellent). Maybe it will be amusing to some, but the best analogy I can think of is two lovers, who have been together for a while, and know each other intimately. I know I'm rambling here, but I'll try to bring it on home with some of my favorite guitar moments from last night . . . Rocking Horse, for instance . . . Warren takes the first solo . . . rips it to shreds . . . then Derek steps up, and plays the first half straight (no slide). At one point Derek is sliding triads around . . . creating lead runs with chords . . . and a peek over at Gregg shows him staring at Derek with his head cocked, and his mouth hanging open just a bit. Magic. Hoochie Coochie man began with a nice long slide dual between Warren and Derek, with I think three turns each, every one longer then the one before it . . . by the time the main riff of the tune broke free, the crowd was practically orgasmic (Warren's first turn featured some distinctly "Trucksian" moves, I thought that was very cool). A couple of tunes earlier, I'm pretty sure it was the end of "Woman Across the River," we saw something similar with straight playing, but where the slide dual was like a diving competition, the call and response (or question and answer) of "Woman" was more like a boxing match. Quick jabs . . . two measures apiece, trading back and forth . . . it was like perfect . . . one of my favorite examples of battling leads is the middle section of Mean Town Blues, from Johnny Winter And, Live. This blew the shit out that, hands down. Which leads me to my final point. Derek is an awesome slide player, I doubt that there's anyone left who will dispute that, but that guy is growing in his straight playing by leaps and bounds. Just the two segments I've mentioned already, the first half of his Rocking Horse solo, and the give and take with Warren later on were enough to floor me. He was playing fast . . . damn fast . . . all over the fret board . . . that was a hell of a performance. I'm going to get this show for sure (and Tuesday's, too) as soon as possible. I've simply got to hear that stuff again. Here's a question for folks more knowledgeable than me - In the footage of the old blues guys on the screen, who was the guy with the pointy beard and jacked-up teeth . . . Sonny Boy Williamson (I or II?) is my guess, but I'd like to know for sure. Also the heavy set guy with the very dark skin . . . I'd like to know who he was, too . . . I think most of the others I knew.

Not that I needed to be reminded why I love this band, but the last 2 nights were just over the top. Five and a half hours of great music, with no repeats. Topped off by Layla. What more can I say? I also sat there thinking I was crazy for thinking they were playing Blue Sky in Mountain Jam. Wow. 5th row center tickets last night - Thanks for the presale Lana! It was great seeing everybody at Berghoff's! Nellie1123 and I went to Buddy Guy's last night for Buddy's birthday. James Mathus (Squirrel Nut Zippers) Knock Down Society was playing. Buddy was getting ready to leave, heard a song he liked, and went up on stage and sang. He left, but Phil Guy (Buddy's brother), came up on stage and played 4-5 songs with the drummer from the Knock Down Society, another guitarist, And Greg Rzab on bass. One of the songs was 'Miss You' by the Stones. Afterwards, I asked Greg if he was going to be Mule's bass player. He said "I'd sure like to be". What a great couple of days.
