I have and enjoy both of Robbie's first two solo albums, Lammie! There's a great mood/feel to that first album.
Oh, and I enjoyed your "NE Pennsylvania Gothic" photos on the DB site, too!
It's funny...The Band wasn't about guitar solos, I guess Robbie felt he played enough solos to last a lifetime with Ronnie Hawkins and that Zimmerman cat. 😉 I have some bootleg Dylan/Band stuff where Robbie solos all over the place. It's great stuff, but his strength is in his passion not his technical prowness. (sp) IMO. I visited The Band's website last year for a spell and there were striking similarities to the dynamic on this website. Pro/anti Robbie posters.
I remember reading about when Clapton sought refuge up in Woodstock with The Band...when he first got tired of being God...he was so into those guys and he asked if he could jam. They said...uh...we don't jam. 🙂
I really like the first Robbie solo album, Doug.
i love the Band.. and even some of Robbie's solo stuff like Storyville...but you guys are right...
he was very impressed with himself...
some of the quotes in there made my blood boil a bit... never thought, myself that Robbie was better than Roy Buchannan... let alone better than Bloomfield...and Peter Green, EC, etc....
but to say he was the best white blues player in the early to mid 60's..
huh??
guess my untrained ears skipped school that day...
the one thing they had right , IMO, they were POWERFUL in concert...
what a sound... but from my ears.. it was Garth, Richard, Levon and Danko driving that beat and rhythym...
their albums never did justice to the sound they produced in concert..
anyway... the end came too soon...
but Levon must not have agreed..
was lucky enough to hear them one more time on that pre-Last Waltz tour at the old "Convention Hall" in Asbury Park the summer of '76... Aztec Two-Step opened for them...
Hey Lana and Rowland, how 'bout making it a rule that every new thread has to have something to do with music from now on? 🙁
The rest of the The Band wasn't too crazy about Robbie adding Neil Diamond to the bill. I believe Robbie was producing Neil D. at the time. The rest of the guys didn't see what connection Neil D. had to their music. I believe there was also talk of Muddy not being on the bill to make room for N.D. Yes there certainly are quite a few close-ups of Robbie, lol... Levon says it makes him sick watching the Last Waltz with Robbie waving his guitar around as if he was conducting the band. I think it's pretty funny Robbies vocals were just coming through the monitors most of the time. Yes there certainly is some bitterness there. I guess Levon kept a pretty low profile at Danko's funeral because Robbie was there.
EZM,
ATGD isn't exactly complimentary about Robbie Robertson, either. It's hard to watch The Last Waltz the same way after reading about his massive ego. Almost ALL of the band close ups in the film are of him, with almost none of Richard Manuel and very few of Garth Hudson, Levon and Rick Danko. Robbie really comes across as being a very vain person.
From a credit standpoint, it's interesting that some of the same gripes Levon had about who wrote what are same types of complaints that were levelled at Dickey by Butch.
Something about drummers maybe?
Hey there sweet family,
Oh my gosh, Linnie! That's so cool! Would she ever let you interview her about the expereince for an article for us?
Take care and know that you are loved,
Lana
my mother used to go on American Bandstand; but was never a regular. it used to be filmed right near her neighborhood.
Brofan and Stormy, I have "This Wheel's on Fire", but I haven't read "Across the Great Divide". Levon is pretty darn bitter towards Robbie in TWOF. Levon had scathing things to say about The Last Waltz, too, but he doesn't seem that bitter and unwilling to cooperate in the film, in my opinion. Maybe I'll get to ATGD this summer...
I hope everyone is doing well. I sure miss being able to check in here during the work day.
The Phillies did win the Series in '80. That counts for something, right? I could not believe how apologetic even the owner of Birdstone was for spoiling the day. Amazing.

It's got a good beat and you can dance to it. I rate it a 95!
happy belated b-day to linnie and John.
Heading to the 35th LA LA land celebration tonight. Reports should follow tommorow.
peace and love--scotty
Hey there sweet family,
I'd race home from school to watch Bandstand, which came on at 4:00 every afternoon. Once my Mom came in the room and started dancing to "The Swim" by Bobby Freeman. Gross! I was appalled! She was so old - all of 33 at the time! 😉

Hey Lana,
I remember American Bandstand...started watching it because my older sister did. She seemed to know who was dancing with who. Me...I just liked to hear the music mostly. Always wished the musical guests would have been singing, and not lipsynching it though. Seems that was a common practice in those days though. It was one of my first musical educations.
Anyone in NY/LI going out to IMAC on Friday to see Derek? If time permits, the LI Crew will have dinner and drinks before the show. Maybe we can meet up before or after?
Mitch
I thought Gerri was on "Where the Action Is." Please send my glasses to the office address. Thanks.

You and Rowland oughta have a new category......."If you were alive when....." you get this many stars, and a pair of glasses 🙂
I started watching the show sometime in either 59 or 60, went overseas for five years, only to discover it was in living color 🙂
Cheers

Hey there sweet family,
ok, this is going waaaay back, but did you have any favorite dancers on American Bandstand when it was in Philly? If you were alive then 😉 There were 2 sisters I thought were cool ... I think their names were Gerri and Lorraine Iannetti.
Take care and know that you are loved,

Hi Lana
Yes, but now, Dick "Dorian Gray" Clark is out of the picture.....to be replaced by a demonic IDOL 🙂
Cheers
