If you have a second, follow this link (http://www.rd.com/content/the-c-f-payne-gallery/) and check out the September cover of TV Guide by artist C.F. Payne. And pay close attention to Dad...
I'm a much bigger Warren Haynes fan than I am Gov't Mule fan.
I probably saw the original mule 7 times including their 2nd ever show at the Super Jam in Athens (great, great day of music). There is music from the original lineup I like, but live it was too bombastic and dark for me (that's coming from someone who used to love but still appreciates classic Iron Maiden, Priest, Sabbath).
I honestly like the Mule when it is four or more people on stage. Warren is so great in large ensembles. My favorite Mule show ever was the one with Oteil on bass and Chuck L on keyboards at the Tabernacle.
The download of Mule from Bonnaroo 07 is a classic and one I'll listen to. I still like to catch them from time to time, particuarly when there will be guests (Chris Robinson & Gregg Allman sitting in with them at the Tabernacle a few years ago for example).
I gotta agree with BDOB . Old or new I love the Mule. They way they blow the roof off the beacon every year for the New Years run is testament to how good this band is........ However, Hemlock is correct about how much of a bad ass Woody was and the new Mule ain't the same. Great band but I've never seen anything quite like those shows from 95-2000. Completely blew my mind. I was fortunate enough to see them in places as small as a coffee shop in the middle of nowhere PA to the biggest venue, being Irving Plaza which is pretty small. Those shows are really special to me. Nothing like it since.
The Band was actually moving toward a more refined sound on Life Before Insanity. The sound of the later Mule albums is on there if you really listen. I love the new Mule and but since Life Before Insanity, there's always 1 or 2 tunes that I don't care for on the newer CD's. That's still head and shoulders above any other band out there's studio output. I'm just waiting for that Mule CD that's a masterpiece from start to finish like Dose or Life Before Insanity. I know they have it in them. I think Mighty High is going to be a lot of fun nothing great but a good time.
Can't wait to get my preorder in the mail next week and I'll see you all at the beacon on 12/28 and 12/29 if I can swing it.
Mule Schmule - Give me some GD Warren Haynes !!
Thats My Horse !
Headed into London tonight for some great music too ... dTb ... WHOO-HOO
.
Headed to the Hard rock tonight to hear some great music...the Neville Brothers...............will definately be a great show.
Mule Rocks!!!
🙂
OK.
I really like the Mule......
Having said that, I respect where they are going musically. I do feel however the Mule was never intended to be anthing other than an R&D project....meaning....the original intent of the Band was to continue to do new things and move into other positions.
The place the Mule is in today IMO is perhaps different than where it might have been with Woody being gone, but then again, didnt the same thing happen to the ABB? It sure did.
My opinoin is however the ABB was and is comfortable staying in the same place musically (or at least that was the case in the 80's-90's) whereas the Mule did not set out to do that.
I could see where that constant change would bother some ABB fans who pay for and want the same thing. Its just a different approach to the music....
'Just an fyi here, a post a while back referred to 'Mighty High', the new Mule disc...then there were references to 'High and Mighty'...which was 2 discs ago. Just know they're different. 🙂
Gun to the head, I'm an 'old' Mule guy...but am VERY glad they continue to put out new music and push themselves musically, challenge themselves, take chances, go in different directions...and, most importantly continue to tour - w/o the Mule, dTb, ABB, Mr Harper, WP, and a few others...live music would generally blow. KeeponRockingintheFreeWorld!! 😎
Back in 2001 my band was asked to play for an individual running for govenor of Florida. We actually got Shanghei'd into it and couldn't get out of it, so we did it, but we'll never do that again. It automaticly alienates about half your fan base.
And really
When you think about it
and I'm a musician talking here...
Who in their right mind really cares what a musician's politics are anyway????? 😮 😮 😮 😮
Seriously!
"Yeah, well that guy who plays the basoon at the Metropolitan Opra House says he's supporting and backing Joe Blow for president. So he's Blowing for Blow and if he's supporting Blow, I guess I'll just have to support Blow too if he says so and he can REALLY CRANK ON THAT BASOON!!! Yeah man! I'm Blowing for Blow too if he tells me to" 😮
Hello!
😆 :lol2: :lol2:
omnipresent posters wear on some of us too Ang.
we would not be where we are today without those who have gone before us. there is a certain amount of respect that goes with that, especially when that someone is not just not in the band, but dies too young.
it's the spark that starts the fire that we can all be thankful for.
this could be applied to original ABB, original Mule, original Grateful Dead, and many many many others.
hell, if Schools hadn't volunteered to fill in for his dear friend whenever Warren & Matt were ready, maybe Mule would've gone to the grave w/ Woody, and you wouldn't be here on this website or going to concerts.
as you mentioned, sit back and let the music play, and if you don't like it, flip the record, or turn the page. there's plenty to choose from. some words are best left unspoken, maybe even these. there's no need to respond to each and every post, comment, thread.
i'm just a peon when it comes to # of posts since I mostly lurk, even before signing up, but don't think it means anything. EAPFPTTLK.
I like Gov't Mule....then and now....same as The Allman Brothers Band. By listening to the old shows and records, we are keeping the memory and spirit of past incarnations alive and honoring the memory of members who have died or moved on. By buying the new records and attending shows, we honor the band in the present. It's all good! To each his own, though.
Ahh, discourse is good for the soul! Just to put my .02 worth in AGAIN. I like the new Mule better than the old mule. I just thing Deja Voodoo and Deep End #1 are both better overall than H & M. the original Mule hurt my ears, and I've sat through West, Bruce and Laing, EL&P, and Black Sabbath so I do know loud. As far as living in the past, get over it. some do, some don't. I' for one, rarely listen to the original albums any more, except for LATFE. Really only because I've worn out so many copies that i'd rather listen to stuff tat has had less air time.
Happy b-day to all the peeps and good to hear Jeanne, Karen, Lynn and Woody's daughter are doing some good.
On the GM thread, although a young person in age here, I go back to the days of the Warren Haynes Band at the wetlands. Blue Dad- Warren on that red Strat was a good thing! Danny was in that band and he added something to it.
HOWEVER, today sans Woody with Danny "the car alarm".... I just don't know what happened to the band I loved so much.
I've was pretty fortunate to see a lot of Woody and the 3 piece was very special. Andy and Woody are clearly different players. BUT Danny... Lay off the horn man....
Peace love and what I think used to be beautiful music--- Scotty
Ok it sounds like we can have a party! I will se what spot would work best. Probally early December.
