Red Dog, I just want to tell you how much I enjoy reading your posts. Stories from the early days are true treasures. You were there from the get go. A lot of the early timers are gone now. These stories need to be preserved for posterity. I remember telling Callahan, at WaneeFest one year, "Man, you were one of the folks who built the temple." Meaning that he was there from the onset, like you, and Kim and Joe Dan, along with the original six band members. He appreciated the remark. It really is the stuff dreams are made of. It was a once in a life time shot. To have been there and experienced it, to have been a part of it ... I can only imagine. I was just too young to know about it then. I know about it now, and realize how significant of a contribution it was to modern music. To hear you reminisce about Duane, Berry, Twiggs and all the others makes my heart soar. Thanks, man, from the bottom of my heart. MERRY CHRISTMAS!

No not really. Religion was not one of our topics. We did sing Christmas songs on the way to New York. We did get the Christmas spirit with a family sit down, same for Thanksgiving. We all got together to break bread. Guess what? We did not talk politics, or about the war. Maybe something would be said once and a while but not a sit down and talk. I was thinking when Rush was talking that this can't be true. He sure made it sound like it was. Thanks for the info. Come here to get it right. Mickey77. Just go. Open your mind and form your own opinion. Then come back and tell everybody what you heard. Music is for your soul.

:birthday: to the Smilin' One 😀 😀 😀 Mickey77 - a Gregg solo show is lots of fun. Gregg has a good old time playing and singing with some wonderful musicians, including his old friend Floyd Miles who will most likely sing a song or 3. Enjoy the show!

Thanks Dog....a great story. Now, let me get in your melon a little. Did Duane or Oak ever comment on Christmas...what it may have meant to them? And dont worry...Rush was pulling the leg today.

Yesterday - Dec. 21st - is (generally recognized as) the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. So days are now getting longer again. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_solstice

Red dog, every day in the winter the sun comes up 1 minute later and sets 1 minute earlier in most parts of the US. This reverses in summer. Very normal-longer sunner days, shorter winter ones. no worries, perfectly norml. Of course, I can see the media trying to spin this as "our"(humans) fault, since what was once weather is now climate change.

Just a comment on the idea of having DB & GS open for the ABB during the beacon run... sounds cool ... I also like the idea of Dickey & Gregg and a couple of acoustic guitars... that would bring it back to where it all began for sure... Maybe a stint of BHLT would work out all right as well....

Oh Rick, nothing like putting a man on the spot. Its our first Christmas together and we are in Chicago. Doing gig a few days before the big day. We are in some motel on the out skirts of dodge. Nothing to do so we are out back in a field behind the motel. Its snowing like heck and as cold. No fear. the brother are naked and running around in a field ,drunk and having a ball. Now I for one never minded dropping the pants but in the snow, you got to really be drunk. We were. That was about all we had. Done up everything else in the bag. I am not talking about the Winny. We did not have her yet. We did have a ford van. No liner at all. Just metal, or tin. 8 bodies and guitars plus suit cases. all went in the Van. Two in the front and six in the back with the stuff. We did have a Avis 12 foot truck we bought and had to restore the engine. That old truck made a few trips across country and back. She did her job. By being it was only a 12 footer we did not have room for nothing but equipment. It was stacked front to back, side to side and bottom to top. Hard to get the door open. Two went in the truck. This was the way we went down the road. Now the next day we had to head for the big Apple. Not our first trip. Just the only one at Christmas. The Van was a piece of work. The heater only kept the drivers gas pedal foot warm, and that was if we put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator. Like I said this Van was a piece of work. Just serving the purpose of getting us from point A to point B. I do believe that is one of the reasons we were so tight. We did everything together. Folks I mean everything. If you saw one, you more then likely saw all ten. Or at least six or eight. We got to New York and went to dinner. We were playing the Fillmore for the first time. Blood Sweat and Tears were the headliner. The nice thing about going to dinner was when we left. It was a nice place. Twiggs paid the bill. trouble was it took all the money we had. No tip for the man. Well Twiggs tells him who we are and why we are in New York. Also lays on him he will be back the next day and give the man his tip. You know the waiter is looking at Twiggs and saying this hippy is going to bring me a tip back tomorrow. Yea, right. Well the next day guess who showed up and laid a nice tip on the waiter who was about to you know what in his pants. He did not believe this was happening. Put a big smile on his face. Made his day. Twiggs above all else was a man of his word. Its nice to make people happy. This gig at the Fillmore, was also when Bill realized he had made a mistake booking the Brothers with Blood and Tears. I do believe the band Love might have been on the show also. Bill had booked the band without listening to a tape or the first record we had finished a month or so before. When he heard the band. He was blown away and said he will never again book a band without listening to them first. He realized he had booked the Brothers with the wrong band. Even with the Brothers getting standing ovations, by blowing the house away, every night, Bill knew this was not the right crowd. So the next thing you know we are back in Feb. with the Dead. Now we are talking and tripping. Bottle of laughing gas in the back. People just having a good time with good music. The music was great. Not much of a story but all I got right now. I need to get the head right. Any body hear about losing two minutes a day of Sun Light in the Northern Hemisphere? If this keeps happening, we could be in darkness by June or July. I got this info from Rushball on the voice box.

OK RED DOG... Allright Dog. I want you to think back a ways, and share with us a Christmas memory with the boys. We are all ears 🙂 Oh, someone here asked "what if you dont know the names" of the nursing home residents. Dont worry. The nursing staff will address the cards for you. Just write a simple note saying Merry Christmas from ____. Thats all. No big deal, but for those with no families, its huge. Not going to chew on that bone, but it may well be some good therapy for someone out there. Also, just a quick note. When you say your prayers tonite, ask God to touch those nurses that will take care of the sick and dying during Christmas. Just think about it and thats all I will say. Thanks.
