Oh Rick, nothing like putting a man on the spot. Its our first Christmas together and we are in Chicago. Doing gig a few days before the big day. We are in some motel on the out skirts of dodge. Nothing to do so we are out back in a field behind the motel. Its snowing like heck and as cold. No fear. the brother are naked and running around in a field ,drunk and having a ball. Now I for one never minded dropping the pants but in the snow, you got to really be drunk. We were. That was about all we had. Done up everything else in the bag. I am not talking about the Winny. We did not have her yet. We did have a ford van. No liner at all. Just metal, or tin. 8 bodies and guitars plus suit cases. all went in the Van. Two in the front and six in the back with the stuff. We did have a Avis 12 foot truck we bought and had to restore the engine. That old truck made a few trips across country and back. She did her job. By being it was only a 12 footer we did not have room for nothing but equipment. It was stacked front to back, side to side and bottom to top. Hard to get the door open. Two went in the truck. This was the way we went down the road. Now the next day we had to head for the big Apple. Not our first trip. Just the only one at Christmas. The Van was a piece of work. The heater only kept the drivers gas pedal foot warm, and that was if we put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator. Like I said this Van was a piece of work. Just serving the purpose of getting us from point A to point B. I do believe that is one of the reasons we were so tight. We did everything together. Folks I mean everything. If you saw one, you more then likely saw all ten. Or at least six or eight. We got to New York and went to dinner. We were playing the Fillmore for the first time. Blood Sweat and Tears were the headliner. The nice thing about going to dinner was when we left. It was a nice place. Twiggs paid the bill. trouble was it took all the money we had. No tip for the man. Well Twiggs tells him who we are and why we are in New York. Also lays on him he will be back the next day and give the man his tip. You know the waiter is looking at Twiggs and saying this hippy is going to bring me a tip back tomorrow. Yea, right. Well the next day guess who showed up and laid a nice tip on the waiter who was about to you know what in his pants. He did not believe this was happening. Put a big smile on his face. Made his day. Twiggs above all else was a man of his word. Its nice to make people happy. This gig at the Fillmore, was also when Bill realized he had made a mistake booking the Brothers with Blood and Tears. I do believe the band Love might have been on the show also. Bill had booked the band without listening to a tape or the first record we had finished a month or so before. When he heard the band. He was blown away and said he will never again book a band without listening to them first. He realized he had booked the Brothers with the wrong band. Even with the Brothers getting standing ovations, by blowing the house away, every night, Bill knew this was not the right crowd. So the next thing you know we are back in Feb. with the Dead. Now we are talking and tripping. Bottle of laughing gas in the back. People just having a good time with good music. The music was great. Not much of a story but all I got right now. I need to get the head right. Any body hear about losing two minutes a day of Sun Light in the Northern Hemisphere? If this keeps happening, we could be in darkness by June or July. I got this info from Rushball on the voice box.
