First known case of sexual Zika transmission without symptoms
by Sandee LaMotte, CNN
Updated 1:39 PM ET, Fri August 26, 2016

(CNN)A man who had no idea he had Zika has given the virus to his female partner during sex, the Centers for Disease Control announced today. It's the first documented case of a person with no symptoms sexually transmitting the virus to a partner who had not traveled to an area of active Zika circulation.

Zika found in mosquitoes in Miami Beach
By Debra Goldschmidt, CNN
Updated 2:30 PM ET, Thu September 1, 2016

(CNN)Mosquitoes carrying the Zika virus have been identified in Miami Beach, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said Thursday.

It's the first finding of Zika-carrying mosquitoes in the continental United States.
The three mosquito samples that tested positive were from the area in Miami Beach that was previously identified as an area of local transmission. Ninety-five other samples tested negative, according to the department of agriculture.
"This is disappointing but not surprising," said Adam Putnam, the Florida commissioner of agriculture.
Mosquito-control measures and mosquito trapping are already in place in the area.

Zika spraying kills millions of honeybees
by Sandee LaMotte, CNN
Updated 7:22 PM ET, Thu September 1, 2016

(CNN)The pictures are heartbreaking: Millions of honeybees lie dead after being sprayed with an insecticide targeting Zika-carrying mosquitoes.

"On Saturday, it was total energy, millions of bees foraging, pollinating, making honey for winter," beekeeper Juanita Stanley said. "Today, it stinks of death. Maggots and other insects are feeding on the honey and the baby bees who are still in the hives. It's heartbreaking."
Stanley, co-owner of Flowertown Bee Farm and Supply in Summerville, South Carolina, said she lost 46 beehives -- more than 3 million bees -- in mere minutes after the spraying began Sunday morning.

Juanita Stanley says she lost more than 3 million bees.
"Those that didn't die immediately were poisoned trying to drag out the dead," Stanley said. "Now, I'm going to have to destroy my hives, the honey, all my equipment. It's all contaminated."
Stanley said Summerville Fire Capt. Andrew Macke, who keeps bees as a hobby, also lost thousands of bees. She said neither of them had protected their hives because they didn't know about the aerial spraying.

"Andrew has two hives," Stanley said. "He didn't know they were going to spray. His wife called him. His bees are at their porch right by their home, and she saw dead bees everywhere."

It's a tragedy that could be repeated across the country as cases of Zika continue to rise and local mosquito control districts struggle to protect their residents and ease local fears.

The long term consequences of this could be just as damaging as Zika itself. Wtf.

Zika doubled devastating birth defects in Brazil
By Sandee LaMotte, CNN
Updated 1:01 PM ET, Thu September 8, 2016

(CNN)The pictures from Brazil are heartbreaking: baby after baby born with a small head and damaged brain after an attack by the Zika virus during pregnancy. The official numbers are equally disturbing: The rate of birth defects involving the nervous system nearly doubled across Brazil after Zika arrived.

Texas Woman Has The State’s First Locally Transmitted Case Of Zika Virus
It’s not just in Florida anymore.
11/28/2016 03:54 pm ET | Updated 2 hours ago

Cameron County, Texas, reported the state’s first locally transmitted Zika virus case on Monday. The patient, a 43-year-old woman from Brownsville, had not traveled anywhere with ongoing Zika transmissions, including Mexico.

“Based on the information we have, this patient has a negative blood test which indicates that she can no longer spread the infection by mosquito,” Dr. James Castillo, Cameron County health authority said in a statement provided to HuffPost. He continued:

This is a reminder that everyone should remain vigilant about Zika. If a woman is pregnant or is considering becoming pregnant, she should be evaluated for possible Zika virus exposure during each prenatal care visit. Each evaluation should include an assessment of signs and symptoms of Zika virus disease such as fever, rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis.

The local health department is working with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state health authorities to investigate the Cameron County case, including door-to-door screening and mosquito control efforts, such as spraying.

The Texas patient, who is not pregnant, has the first locally acquired case in the United States outside of Florida. As of Nov. 23, Florida has 238 locally acquired Zika cases on record and 170 cases of Zika virus in pregnant women, according to the Florida Health Department.

Zika virus, which spread rapidly through Latin America and the Caribbean in 2015 and 2016, is especially dangerous for pregnant women because it is linked to the birth defect microcephaly, which can cause brain damage, seizures, deafness, blindness and other neurological problems.

The Zika virus is alive and will continue to plague people for a long time.

Much research has been done with some promising results on the front end but very little progress has been made on the back end.

There are two avenues of pursuit; prevention and treatment.

While the Pirbright Institute in the United Kingdom has what many consider the only prevention course even they admit that the Zika virus can mutate and be borne by other mosquitoes. The consensus appears to be that only time and intense research will eventually solve the problem.

Look how long it took the world to conquer Y-Pestis (plague) but it was defeated.

The prevention course is the only viable one right now. Treatment is quite another problem. Geneticist warn that a remedy from someone already infected is now not an option.

I have read and listened to many in the field of biomedical research and public health and encouragement is not the general feeling you get but those in the disciplines who can make a difference are doggedly pursuing answers.

The folks from the Pirbright Institute will be at my organization’s offices for a briefing at the end of this month before heading to Brazil in March to begin another prevention pre-deployment trial. They and others will be working with the Pan-American Health Organization. The PAHO really know what they are doing in the world of public health. Their biggest problem is the number of people who need them.

Tic toc…
