Where did all those eco-wizards go who were screaming 6-8-10 years ago that we had reached the end, and shortage was our fate from then forward?

Driving into work today I heard a story talking about the worldwide glut of oil, and the possibility of near or under $2/gal by year's end.

The peak supply of easily obtainable oil probably occurred in the 1980s - 90s. The whole fracking thing means that we are basically going after oil now in places once deemed too difficult (cost efficient) to go after.

We've actually begun to use less petroleum. Newer cars are much more fuel efficient than cars made before 2000. Believe it or not, many SUVs get better mileage than sub-compacts manufactured 10 years before.

Newer buildings are designed to use less energy for heating and cooling - sometimes using ideas that are actually centuries old!

I don't mean to make a political issue (or even get involved in any political issue), but keep in mind that petroleum is a fossil fuel. There is a finite supply and one day it will run out.

If I could collect my farts into a gas tank, I'd be able to drive from Los Angeles to Boston non-stop.

Halliburton started fracking around 1950.

It began in earnest in the mid 1970's thanks to subsidies and tax breaks from we the tax payers via the Dept. of Energy.
