Funny how all the "trade Brady" calls I heard on various sports radio call-in shows during the first few weeks of the season have dried up...

I can win my NFL pool tonight. Not sure who to take. I am one game back. I think Denver should cover but I figure the two guys I need to catch will probably take them as well so I need to go against them so I guess I am going with Houston. Not too confident in that but it is worth a shot.

Ya think John Elway is smiling this morning, comparing what Houston is paying BO and what the Broncos are paying for Siemian . Who got the bad end of the deal on that one?! Yikes!

It looks like Geno Smith tore hos ACl just into his first start of the season for Fitz.

I heard the Mike Martz's postgame press conference after the loss this past weekend, lays into the team pretty good.

You know. Cool

This just in...the oldest guy in the league also happens to be the best at this position...

Tom Brady finally qualifies for passing stats, leads NFL in every meaningful category

Well, that didn't take long. By "that," I really mean "Tom Brady taking over the NFL on his official middle finger to the entire league tour."

It's been three games since Brady returned from his four-game Deflategate suspension and he's already established himself as the best quarterback of the 2016 season. After another successful outing against the Steelers on Sunday, Brady has finally thrown enough passes to qualify for official NFL passing statistics (which MassLive's Kevin Duffy first pointed out).

He's already on top of every meaningful category.

Through three games, Brady's gone 76 of 101 for 1,004 yards, eight touchdowns, zero interceptions, and a 132.6 passer rating. Let's take a look at where those numbers stack up.

Passer rating: Brady's 132.6 passer rating leads the NFL.

He's actually 19 points ahead of the next closest quarterback, Matt Ryan, and his 113.6 rating. For context, consider Brady's career-high rating in a single season is 117.2, which he put up during the Patriots' undefeated 2007 season, and the NFL's single-season record is held by Aaron Rodgers' 122.5 rating in 2011.

There's still a ways to go, but Brady is on pace to crush that mark.

Completion percentage: Brady has completed 75.2 percent of his passes. That's the highest completion percentage in the NFL.

Dak Prescott, who has completed 68.7 of his attempts, is in second. So, Brady is on top by nearly seven percent.

Yards per pass: Obviously due to the fact that he was suspended for a quarter of the season (remember: all because under-inflated footballs were used during an absolute blowout of a game), Brady does not lead the NFL in passing yards. But if you look at yards per pass (a better stat anyway, because it measures efficiency and not volume), it's Brady in a landslide.

So far, he's averaging 9.94 yards per attempt, which means he's basically averaging a first down every time he lets go of the football.

Matt Ryan is in second with 9.62 yards per pass.

Touchdown rate: Drew Brees leads the NFL in total passing touchdowns with 17. But if you look at touchdown rates, Brady is on top.

7.9 percent of his passes wind up in the end zone. For the sake of comparison, Brees leads the league in touchdowns, but his touchdown rate is 6.2 percent (tied for the fourth-highest percentage). In second place is Ben Roethlisberger, who's throwing a touchdown on 7.1 percent of his passes.

Again, Brady is ahead by a decent margin.

Interceptions: Brady has yet to throw an interception this year. So, obviously, he's tied for the best interception rate in the NFL.

The only other qualified passer without an interception is Bears backup Brian Hoyer, but his season appears to be over.

The point being: Tom Brady might be 39, but he's not slowing down. And we shouldn't be surprised if his run of success continues.

One reason for that is coaching. Bill Belichick might (I'd say he is) be the greatest coach in the history of the NFL and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels proved his value by successfully working with both Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett. Another reason is the Patriots' personnel -- something our Jared Dubin broke down recently.

The last reason is Brady himself. The endings for older all-time greats often come out of nowhere (see: Peyton Manning), but I can't help but think Brady wasn't entirely wrong when he said he wanted to play until 2025.

He's an unstoppable machine -- even with fully inflated footballs.

I moved recently so I've missed picks for a few weeks (and my tv broke in the moving truck). It's been a pretty quiet season all around. Not a whole lot for any team to get excited about except maybe Dallas and New England and Minnesota. Oakland has been a solid surprise as well. Maybe I've just been watching fewer games this year than usual. There have been a number of reports that NFL ratings are down this season and talking heads seem to like to attribute it to the anthem protests, but as a fan, I just not finding this season as exciting overall.

The Philly-Dallas game should be a good one, 2 rookie QBs, division game. Dallas has 2 weeks of rest and hasn't lost to The Lions yet. Could flip a coin on that pick.

Jacksonville Tennessee (um, Tenn, I guess)
Washington Cincinnati (Wash)
Kansas City Indianapolis (KC)
Oakland Tampa Bay (Oakland)
Seattle New Orleans (Seattle)
Detroit Houston (Detroit)
New York Cleveland (Browns for the "upset")
New England Buffalo (NE)
Arizona Carolina (Arizona)
San Diego Denver (Denver)
Green Bay Atlanta (GB)
Philadelphia Dallas (Dallas)

Minnesota Chicago (Minn)

Yeah, I agree. It looks like NE and Dallas are the two most consistently potent teams. After that you probably could lump in Denver, Oak, Minn and that's about it. The others seem to be inconsistent.

I have heard of this as well. I disagree with the premise about the anthem nonsense causing a lack of interest. The league and owners will still make billions and the players will make millions.

I think it is a combination of things...first and foremost the product itself, with a few exceptions, is just not good, or at least not as good as fans expect. I would also include the fact that the officiating gets worse and worse and the reviews are too frequent and too long, the absolute failure leadership by Goodell and the rest of the numskulls in charge in dealing with player discipline (and I'm not even talking about deflategate), and then somewhere down the list is the anthem stuff (I think it is a factor for some, just not a big one overall).

I agree with you.

The officiating is just awful. Awful. What is a penalty and what isn't? Shouldn't these guys know that?

And the fines and penalties against players make no sense. You can beat your wife and get penalized more games for some sort of PED? Makes no sense.

I think as technology keeps advancing as far as replays and etc, the ref's
will be scrutinized to no end about getting everything perfect. I do agree there are times when
it is very important/needed and valued. But ya know what, you win some and lose some, it stinks but that's the way it is. Some fans may feel they
are being victimized by poor calls and complain about it whether its on the field or off
of it. I don't get into politics of sports all that much, but I guess that's what the Whipping post is for here, to beat your opinion into the ground that you are right. Its just a game folks, don't get to butt hurt about it.

No ref is ever going to be perfect and there will be never be a perfect called game.
I guess if you want to extract the human element out of the game and have ever penalty
replayed, you might want to pack a lunch and dinner , cause its going to be a looonnnggg game.
You cant have it both ways. I know I would not want to be a ref. Trying to make a call in a split
second of action is not an easy thing to do.

Looking forward to today's games. Some interesting ones. I am especially intrigued by the Pats/Bills game. While I hated to do it, in my pick 'em pool I took the Pats giving 5.5. I checked the line this morning and it is up to 7 in Vegas. Obviously everyone is taking them.

And given what Buffalo did to them already this season, I am not surprised.

No offense at all but I think you may be overreacting a bit. I don't think anybody that posts here is trying to change anyone's thoughts, just offering an opinion. We got instant replay which is a help but when they can look a play again and still get it wrong? I do have a problem there. Smile

Moot point. Jets gave up a meaningless TD at the end so they pushed. Mad

Did anyone see/hear Jay Gruden's post game press conference? He said he didn't know an NFL game could end in a tie. I sure hope he was kidding!
