First, I offer my most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Rush Limbaugh.  My level of compassion for them during this time are the same as I would offer for anyone.  I am sure that this is a sad day for many.

We're all born and we'll all pass.  The only other thing as certain as this, as the saying goes is taxes.  In dying, Rush Limbaugh is not unique.

The late, George Carlin once pointed out that, "when you die, people will say nice things about you -even if they have to make them up".

For whatever good Limbaugh might've done in his life, it's fair to also remember him for spreading a certain amount of hate, bias and even intimidation towards others.  From the few times that I listened to his show, he seemed to have branded himself as "an entertainer".  I can think of a few humorous quips but most were at the expense of another person - if not an entire race or sex.  I did not choose to tune-in during the most recent election.  I don't know if he shared in the Trump propaganda machine - if he spread lies and mistruths.  I do know that he was among Trump's most ardent and vocal supporters.

His "talent" was "on loan from God", he'd say.  I'll let them sort out any differences as he goes home to return said gift.

Peace.

R

I have nothing nice to say. The guy was a racist with a megaphone. He advocated for heavy sentences for drug users while getting hooked on oxycodone. The world is a better place without him.

I can't believe he was 70. I thought he was about the same age as Larry King & Imus.

I usually don't speak negatively of those who have passed away, but I can't find anything in your post to disagree with. It is accurate to a word.

Unfortunately people like him impact so many others' thinking in such a negative way.

@rusty You are spot on. Since when is hate a talent bestowed by god? I found him to be one of the world's biggest, self absorbed blow hards and consider myself a moderate.

@vtab  I try to make it a point to never actually celebrate a death.  There have been some beings who make it tough not to do so.  Was Limbaugh on the same shelf as Hitler?  Manson?  Jeffrey Dahmer?  Maybe not, but I can think of few who used their celebrity status to spread more hate and division.  Like I said, we'll all die one day.  Most of us make a few misguided mistakes in our youth.  I hope that just as many become more decent and caring towards others as we grow older.  It has been said that Rush Limbaugh gave rise to Donald Trump - filling many hearts and souls with hate and disgust along the route.  I concur with this notion.  So, I won't celebrate his death but I will find peace in the absence of his rhetoric.

Trump, the big loser gave an interview to FOX today about Rush, and the big loser repeated the big lie. What a surprise.

The link follows as does the highlighted lines:

https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-fox-news-limbaugh-death-false-election-claims-184845061.html

Trump, who had not given a formal interview since before the deadly Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, repeated the false claim that the 2020 election was stolen from him — and said Limbaugh believed that it was, too.

"Rush thought we won, and so do I," Trump said. "I think we won substantially."

"You don't know how angry this country is,” he added. “We should have had it."

How did Rush Limbaugh become so wealthy? Net worth according to Forbes was $600 million. Limbaugh did not like liberals and often classified liberalism,  socialism and communism as the same people who advocate the same end result. Power. Power to force their take on morality and government's role in people's lives.

He claimed liberals and socialists can't win an argument thus instead of debating the issues, they want to silence conservatives by banning them from all public platforms just as they do in all hard core socialist societies.  Liberal want to control how you think, what you can say, how you live, whether you can own a gun, what you eat and drink, what you drive and when you can fly and when you must walk or ride a bike to your destination or take mass transit. How you power your home. Limbaugh even claimed soon a man who thinks he is really a woman with a purse full of marijuana will be celebrated and wonderful to liberals while a man burning gasoline in a pickup truck towing a methane belching cow in a trailer will be run off the road and jailed!!

That is the kind of rhetoric that fuels violence I think. Also the far left socialist positions of people such as Sanders will NEVER be implemented in this country. There are not enough Democrats who would back it. Biden just rejected Sanders's demand to forgive $50,000 dollars student debt and $15 dollar an hour minimum wage. Biden supports a gradual move in the minimum wage.

Maybe Bernie Sanders and AOC seem to support such intrusive positions but as Joe Biden said they didn't win. Biden " The socialist lost. Do I look like a socialist?"

I think he also hoped Bernie Sanders would have won the Democratic nomination.

I don't like trashing the dead as a general rule. Bill Maher on his HBO late night talk show when David Koch died a year or so ago said " I'm glad the f***** is dead. I hope he greatly suffered the last weeks of his miserable life".

That wasn't nice. I didn't agree with his political views often but was embarrassed that some of the people in Hollywood gave David Koch death parties to celebrate the man died. How in the hell is that decency and tolerance? It played right into Rush Limbaugh's hands.

Also David gave away billions of dollars to all kinds of charities,  arts and museums in New York City as New York's richest citizen. Gave $250 million to a predominantly black university.

The oldest Koch brother also funded theaters, playwrites , museums etc in New York and as a gift bought and restored a castle in England that the Queen thanked him for.

Let's be nice. I thought we were the tolerant ones.  Respectful of everyone's right to think and speak. When we supported blacks and gays and minorities in the hippie 70s we were all about love and peace. Remember?

@martind28  I hope that a transcript of this post-election chat gets used as evidence in the Civil suit against him!  It reflects absolutely zero remorse for the insurrection at the Capitol.

@rusty Trump will never show any remorse or accept any blame or admit Biden defeated him in a fair election.

Two reasons:

1. His ego will not permit him to ever admit defeat or show humility. Trump since a child has had to always be a winner and the best at everything. Some say his father is to blame for this incredible character flaw.

2. When he did win Hillary and many Dems including John Lewis, Adam Schiff and Richard Blumenthal from day one claimed Trump didn't really win and was not legitimate and conspired with Putin and the Russian government to cheat and steal the election.  So his horrible ego requires him to do the same to the Democrats.  Give it back to them. Say the Dems cheated and stole the election.

Trump has the worst kind of ego and disposition.  Always painting himself in the best light and never showing any humility and remorse and always wanting to insult and belittle his critics.

A couple of Trump fanatics I know insist they stopped counting Trumps votes in the swing states and Trump actually got over 80 million votes not 74 million. But Trump's own Justice Department could not substantiate that and Barr finally resigned. Trump apparently wanted his administration and the Republicans in Georgia to cheat and Pence to throw out Biden's electoral college victory and was livid that these people betrayed him.

I hope a socialist does not become President in my lifetime but what would be worse would be another Trump presidency or someone similar.

@playallnite How could one know for sure if a socialist country could handle a pandemic better?

State run media rather than a free press.

One party and no vote.

Government dictates where you live, what you drive if anything, what to eat, what you can own and how many children you can have.

In China only two children allowed.

Recently in Vietnam a young man got 7 years in prison for dressing up like their version of George Washington, Ho Chi Minh at a party. Charged with disrespecting the father of their beloved socialist system.

Me..I'd rather be dead than red.

@robertdee there is a different between "socialism" and "communism".

Communism is both a political system and an economic one. In politics, communist parties have absolute power over governance, and elections are single-party affairs. In economics, the party controls the country's economic system, and private ownership is illegal, although this facet of communist rule has changed in some countries like China.

By contrast, socialist nations are generally democratic with multi-party political systems. A socialist party does not have to be in power for socialist principles—such as a strong social safety net and government ownership of key industries and infrastructure—to be part of a nation's domestic agenda. Unlike communism, private ownership is encouraged in most socialist nations.

Examples include Portugal, Sri Lanka, India, Guinea-Bissau, and Tanzania. Many of these nations, such as India, have multi-party political systems, and several are liberalizing their economies, like Portugal.

Sweden uses a form of Democratic Socialism, and does not have state-run media. They never imposed lock-down or mask mandates, and haven't really seemed to fair any better than other European countries.

I'm not sure what the obsession with socialism is here, but it seems to never die. The US is not a socialist society and probably never will be. However there are pros & cons with different isms. There can be a political and economic debate around isms. I really think using "socialism" is nothing more than a boogeyman fear. It's kind of like using terms like "this will be the most fraudulent election in history" or "this is the greatest hoax ever experienced by a President".

Donald Trump is more akin to P.T. Barnum than Thomas Jefferson.  Limbaugh was his Col. Tom-like pimp.  Together they took the uneducated masses and played to their racism and reaped fortunes for themselves in doing so.  This was all straight out of the Adolf Hitler playbook.

@porkchopbob None of the countries in the article have a huge military like the U.S.

Also the United States has NEVER had government ownership of parts of parts of the economy and infrastructure with the exception of Amtrak passenger trains.

Bernie Sanders along with other very left leaning members of congress such as AOC advocate and promote exactly that. They are pushing for nationalization of the healthcare system and pharmaceuticals.  Blue Cross, Blue Shield and Johnson and Johnson would be forced out. Same for nationalization of energy companies.  ExxonMobil, ConEdison etc would be forced out. Even some want to nationalize cement, steel and food because of their large contribution to climate change including regulations that would require Americans to stop eating beef and moving to plant based diets so most Beef cattle can be eliminated.  See Bill Gates new book which advocates for just that. Some lefties are advocating for parts of transportation and infrastructure to be nationalized with an intent of moving more and more people to virtual meetings and far more electric high speed rail than flying Delta.

The millions and millions of people who have great jobs with great benefits and healthcare will not stand for this.

Talking about BIG government!!!!

The socialists in congress so far haven't gained the power to move the US into big government,  high taxes, massive regulations socialism even as a mix with capitalism.

I hope they never accomplish anything.

If I want to fly from LA to Nee York and back 5 days a week, eat T bone steaks and drive a V8 Cadillac, that is my choice and NONE of the governments business. I could be wrong but my feeling is the vast majority of Americans, especially those who run businesses and work for Delta Airlines and Notfolk Southern Railway are like me. And so are most Democrats ( my party) and ALL Republicans.

I recently saw a poll porkchopbob that was shocking. 56% of Americans in their 20's would prefer socialism over capitalism?

Capitalism has spawned more wealth, millionaires,  innovation, raised more economic boats,  lifted more people out of poverty and made life easier than any system known to man.

Medicine to space travel to modern living and invention have come from capitalism.

Even if multiple political parties existed in a socialist country would there be one that advocated returning to the old way of American life?

Jim Clyburn,  D-SC saved Joe Biden's campaign by telling the voters in South Carolina to reject socialism and vote for Joe. Jim said we have social programs here and some need to be better funded and expanded such as a lower age to get on Medicaid.  But Jim Clyburn also said America has NEVER mixed socialism with the economy as Sanders wants to do.

@robertdee I'm not arguing the benefits or pitfalls of capitalism, just that you are confusing socialism for communism. Democratic Socialist countries aren't the utopias their proponents might have you believe, but their citizens enjoy the same basic freedoms we do.

I am perplexed by how extremely rich some have become. Dozens of people are worth over 50 billion dollars now.

When I was a young man in the 70's Howard Hughes was the only billionaire as far as I know and he was worth about 3 billion. John D. Rockefeller was a billionaire when he died in the 1930's but billionaires were rare.

Today there is Bill Gates, The Waltons of WalMart,  Jaqueline Mars candy heiress,  Charles Koch (surviving Koch brother) , Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos,  Warren Buffett and others worth 50, 80, 100 billion dollars.

Even Trump is a billionaire according to Forbes. $3 billion, 100 million. Billionaires aren't that rare now. Paul McCartney of the Beatles is a billionaire.

@robertdee I live in south Florida and a large numger of the mansions on A1A, the road along the ocean from Jacksonville to Miami, are someone's 2nd, 3rd, or 4th house, etc. Doctors, lawyers, retired athletes, etc. Many are empty during the year, just a vacation residence. It blows me away when I drive along it and think about just how many people can afford such luxury. Maybe it's because in most places the wealthy are in private neighborhoods or penthouses, they aren't on full display.

I don't have an answer for whether the distribution of wealth is ok, but it seems awfully wasteful to me. If they're not using the mansion, they could at least lend it to me for the weekend. I'll even stock he fridge.

Socialism wouldn’t be perfect. It would surely reproduce at least some of the problems of the existing system, and we’d still need a strong regulatory state to oversee even a worker-controlled private sector. Such a system would, however, be a vast civilizational improvement over what we have now — especially during this kind of crisis.

@porkchopbob I have been to Florida many times. I've lived mostly in North Carolina,  Virginia and New York City.  New York City did roll in $100 billion a year off it's entertainment business alone.  Billions in skyscrapers yet the Subways in many areas are overflowing with homeless people. Same with Penn Station.  And half of these people are mean and angry. They stink and their stench in some Subway stations and Penn Station is awful.  They are aggressive and pushy demanding money and food. Scary people. Makes New York challenging.   There must be an answer.  Now the crime rate is way up. Subways are more dangerous and New York Transit Authority is right now demanding the Mayor assign 1,000 police officers to police the Subways in the wake of a major defunding of NYPD.

New York is so expensive now its amazing anyone that makes less than 2,000 dollars a week could live there but the homeless, drug addicted and alcoholics are in good numbers.

The homeless in San Francisco are mean for the most part and demanding with tents and boxes lined up for blocks living in them. No toilets and needles and crap all over.

I guess socialist/communist countries such as China or North Korea would eliminate people like that. China has over 1 million Muslims in reindoctrination camps right now.

It really did seem in the 1960s and 70s the excesses of capitalism wasn't that great. A great middle class with good jobs, house, 2 cars, 3 kids, dog, cat and happy times and freedom. CEOs made 200 to 500 thousand dollars a year and now its 20 million. Hedge funds and speculation managers apparently become billionairs just advising and moving money around now.

Guard rails and stronger social net programs are needed perhaps.

Most Americans don't want government intervention in our lives other than taxes and speed limits and laws to keep people honest.

Bernie Sanders thinks its immoral to be a billionaire and would implement a hardy wealth tax that over time would eliminate billionaires with the money being redistributed to fund a massive welfare state and to fight climate change. But that smells like big government,  high taxes and job and freedom choking heavy handed government regulations.  And yes people having several houses while other sleep in the Subway does make me sad but what can we do?

Perhaps each state should be more independent.  If you want a deep blue state set up, move to one. Red? Move to one. Or if you are middle of the road like me, a purple state.

Government of the people, for the people, by the people...freedom of press, religion, speech, assembly,  own property and run your own business and do as you please is way better than socialism but social programs and saftey nets through slightly higher taxes is crucial. But why are these arrogant crack heads ruining New York City,  LA and San Francisco? Would socialism remedy that other than rounding them up and putting them in some concentration camp?

It's a complicated world.

We don't live in a free market society. The Captains of Industry and finance have undue control of government via donations to lawmakers (otherwise known as bribes if you and I did it) that they have changed the rules of the game and tilted the tables in their favor. You could argue if this is worse than socialism or not - I personally believe that the pendulum has swung too far and needs to be pulled back.

As far as Rush goes, my mom told me if I didn't have anything nice to say, don't say it. Especially about the deceased.

I will keep very, very quiet.

I'll just repeat what Rush said about Jerry Garcia when he died, as it is just as relevant to Rush Limbaugh:
