"Black Liberation March" got out of hand 1/19 that started in Brooklyn and ended near City Hall with 28 arrests and 11 officers injured.

1/20 Antifa protesters in Seattle and those calling to abolish ICE and "abolish everything" - property damage and vandalism including a courthouse, multiple arrests.

1/20 J20 (who I just heard of) protesting in Portland, vandalism, throwing objects at police.  8 arrests.

All these violent protesters just need to go away.  I don't care what side you are on, can they somehow all get felony charges and lock them up to put an end to this nonsense?  Unfortunately it doesn't seem like this crowd was friendly towards Biden, so not like him calling for unity is going to work.

CNBC just ran a clip of police in Portland having to use teargas against ANTIFA protesting Joe Biden's election.

Who exactly did they think was going to be inaugurated yesterday?  Some people...

I asked about a year ago if this would all go away as soon as Trump was no longer President.  Will Joe tell "Antifa" to "stand down and stand by"?

I don't know what Joe will say, he may in fact say nothing being that in these pacific northwest cities I wonder if protests for any number of issues ever stops.

The extreme people on the far left and the people on the far right are never going to be happy because what they want isn't possible, nor should it be.  Hopefully we can have efforts to limit and marginalize all these types of people should they get violent or destructive.  Maybe twitter and facebook and whatever else is on the case blocking and banning the leaders of all these groups.

No these groups want socialism, open borders, abolition of immigration police, eliminate prisons and bail, free healthcare, guaranteed 20 dollar an hour jobs that focus on hiring people who usually get turned down in the private sector and defunding the police to the point that on most small robberies including shoplifting and most domestic disputes and most drug and drunk and disorderly calls are answered by people without guns and have training in counseling.

These outrageous people want lawlessness it seems plus socialism.  Cuba, Venezuela,  China, Vietnam,  North Korea etc doesn't have that kind of socialism.

I tried to March in a Black Lives Matter march here just after George Floyd but had to leave the march because I looked around and half of the placards held high by the marchers were pro socialism anti capitalism/free market placards.

Sean Hannity claims Black Lives Matter is an anti capitalism pro socialism movement which I though was right wing propaganda.  Maybe not???

Trump's thugs seem to be evaporating. There was an article in the NYT today "A Total Failure: Proud Boys Mock Trump" by a reporter who has been following far right wing groups since 2015. The summary is that Trump "caved" & didn't declare martial law & allowed Biden to be president, he didn't pardon any of the Proud Boys, QAnon, & others involved in what they thought he demanded in the insurrection, and those groups plus Oath Keepers, America First, & Three Percenters who once said "Hail Emperor Trump" basically think he used them & then "washed his hands of them." They don't have the access they once did on SM to spread conspiracy theories & w/some of their leaders in jail, they're now spreading the word to give up on both parties to pursue secession & local protests.

I'm w/you. Protests, peaceful or not, have lost their effectiveness. Give it a rest.

CNN is reporting that members of the extremist militant underground radical Oath Keepers group planned the attack on the Capitol

so it may not have been Trump after all

Unless he was tied to that group in some way

if that could be proven it’d be more than enough ammo for impeachment

as it is, democrats agreed to postpone impeachment trial by two weeks

they’ll gitim, you just watch

I don't think the protests in Portland ever stopped from last year. And some 91% of those arrested are never charged or prosecuted for anything.

It's kind of nuts that the Portland protests are still going on. Not sure what they think they are going to accomplish.

NYC has its own problems. Decades of overly-aggressive policing in minority neighborhoods coming to a head. "Stop & frisk" policing, shoot and ask questions later, and bogus operations to yield stats - I don't blame a lot of people for being angry at some NYC cops. Obviously violence doesn't solve the problem, but their frustration is often legit.

It's kind of nuts that the Portland protests are still going on. Not sure what they think they are going to accomplish.

According to an OregonLive 1/22/21 story; they want things like:

"policing [that] is drastically reduced or eliminated altogether and racial inequalities exorcised"

"we wouldn't be out here if cops weren't still killing people"

"if you have a system not working properly you have to shut it the hell down"

"they want to see the city take $50 million immediately from the Portland Police Bureau to fund programs that aid communities of color and reduce the number of interactions armed officers have with the public"

"we should be doing everything we can to eliminate the need for police; defunding forces actual policy and procedure changes"

"many now call for the abolition of police, prisons and capitalism"

the make up is "multiracial mix of younger activists and season leftists, including anarchists, anti-fascists and other racial groups long at the center of Portland's protest scene"

"a few organizers have made the point of holding events earlier in the day that include speeches, marches with a designated route and wrap up after an hour or two.  Others remain committed to the so-called 'direct action' which at times includes vandalism against private businesses and government buildings as well as rocks, bottles and fireworks thrown at officers from some people in the crowd.  The police response is often aggressive and indiscriminate activists say, galvanizing many to return night after night"

In short, they can never accomplish what they want and so it goes on forever so long as people there allow it to.

As a "mostly liberal with a little bit of conservative in my blood", it occurs to me that as soon as the police are "defunded" ... we're gonna soon find out why we funded them to begin with.  Weed-out the bad cops, for sure.  But dissolve entire departments?

I've heard it said that "religion is the opium of the masses" (Marx, I believe).  In a deep conversation, someone suggested that the reason that LAWS were devised was because religion - and the fear of God or punishment just wasn't working anymore.  Totally defunding police departments just doesn't seem like the answer.  As a life-long anti-gun person - if we ever do totally dissolve all said police departments and police protection, I will very likely become a gun owner.

Radical times call for radical opinions!

Peace!

@nebish I get what they think they want.

But if they want to defund the police, they should probably stop going out every night and justifying its existence.

The ones still protesting are the minority extremists.  I tend to think of them as career protesters and rioters.  The same types that would protest outside the WTO conferences 20 years.

Sometimes I wish to make them go away some kind of land or place can be created and they are given the option to go and establish the way of life they want - leave the ills of our society behind and go make yourself a better one.  Ultimately, I think they would be disappointed and are probably happier just causing trouble.

There was another story I read that was part of a Portland Tribune/Pamplin Media 1/29/21 piece that said the police catch and release the protesters and they return emboldened to do whatever they want.  Since late May 2000 there have been over 1000 arrests, according to court records 8.4% of cases are still open with the rest listed as dismissed or no complaint (meaning authorities did not pursue charges).  One protester said the following: "if the police want to arrest 50 people a night, then, OK, that's what they are going to do - their jail is too small.  They don't have room for that many people and the DA isn't prosecuting anymore.  So we won that."

That is the mentality.  No matter how much trouble they cause, vandalism, assault - they do not fear any consequences and instead see their actions as winning.  It won't stop until there are harsher consequences for what these people are doing.  And yet there are those that say we have too many people in prison.  They should enact a 3 strikes and you're out policy for violent and destructive protesters.  That too would be too controversial for some.  Get these people off the street!
