I wonder why? Good thing he has his 2nd amendment rights.

I agree that this act by this sick SOB is the epitome of terrorism.
Sounds like they know who he is at this point. I'd imagine that by the end of the day he'll either be dead or in custody.
Just wondering if he went through the required waiting period and had his psychological profile and all that.
Say anything you want about guns - the right to bear arms and all that - just tell me how to keep them out of the hands of angry sociopaths and dickheads in general.

FYI - also missing from discussion in the past week: any thread about the "trans-raced lady" and the New York escapees. We're missing lots of opportunities for chatting, here.

As of now I don't know that I would call this an act of terrorism in the sense we use the word these days, we'll have to see what info follows. What an incredibly sad event.

I dunno, Mac. Walking into a church service and opening fire on unsuspecting individuals (violating a religious act/rite) sounds pretty terroristic to me. I guess I'll get my Funky-Wagnall out and reexamine the actual definition.

Terrorism is usually defined as an act of violence committed to further a socio-political message or bring attention to an organization or cause.

So, basically, it's the difference between and nutjob and a nutjob with a point to make. 😛

I mean, it could be. But my first reaction is this is a sick puppy with a gun, not some ideological extremist. Kind of what Bhawk just said.

I see what you're saying. According to survivors, this piece of excrement said he was there to kill black people. Don't you think this entails at least the "socio" part of your definition?

"I have to do it. You rape our woman and are taking over our country" is not trying to make a point?

Is this a quote associated with the crime in question? I haven't heard this part yet.

I do agree, yes. I believe this has been designated a "hate crime" (there's no shortage of folks that hate that term). But, yeah, if that was his goal, it fits the mold, IMO.

Yes, but it could be a point based on individual delusional thinking instead of a point adopted and accepted by a group this individual would be representing. At this point it seems like the former to me, but I'm sure we'll get plenty more information in the days to come.

What is especially disturbing to me is that he apparently sat with these people for around an hour before he started shooting, asked for the pastor by name, and sat next to him.

So, is "terrorism" deemed to be a "group-think" kind of thing? No lone-wolf activism applies?

It would still fit, though, definition-wise. Anders Breivik is considered a terrorist, killed 77 people on his own.

As for the white black lady, well, I dunno. Caitlin Jenner's cat is a dog. People are crazy and times are strange.

I could live with it either way. I guess any criminal act could be considered a type of terrorism if it contained an ideological component.

If what happened in Charleston last night doesn't qualify as terrorism, I'm not sure what does. Does it matter whether it is racially motivated or religiously motivated? Or if it is perpetrated by a lone American white person or a lone Saudi Muslim? Terrorism is terrorism, regardless of the perpetrator.

The media reports of the killer's alleged statements to one survivor — "You rape our women and are taking over our country and you have to go" — seems to imply a targeted appeal to historical white fears of black encroachment, while the long history of white extremists attacking black churches in the U.S. firmly situates this in a legacy of racial terror. This attack — in a church co-founded by slave revolt leader Denmark Vesey, no less — has all the hallmarks and trauma of terrorism, IMO.

She's Michael Jackson in complete reverse!

An interesting side topic - there was this jazz guy named Mezz Mezzrow. I think he might've been Jewish, but he hung with all the cats of his day (especially Louis Armstrong). His book, "Really the Blues" is an outstanding read. He went through his own type of transformation ... before it was fashionable!

I just wonder where would a crazed young white lunatic get an idea like blacks are taking over the country? Just where in public discourse would an idea like that come from?

The white black lady thing is just stupid. Who really cares?

I have noticed something, though. I've had the Today Show on in the mornings getting the kiddo ready for school for a few years now...

If you or your lawyer are getting interviewed at any point by Matt Lauer, most likely you are disturbed and in some completely effed-up situation that actually has no bearing on anything. 😛

Well, Mr. Trump did refer to rapists invading the country the other day, but to be fair, he was talking about Mexican immigrants. 😛

Yes he did say most Mexican immigrants were either drug dealers or rapists and did not back down on the comments and right here on an old rock band website we have posters cheering him on because he is good at business.

Digressing to his Donaldness: I think the current poll says that 78% of republicans say that they WOULD NOT vote for him. He's just taking up headline space. 😉

the photo of this guy where he is outside wearing a jacket with some patches/flags on it, it is my understanding that the flags are from apartheid era south Africa and white ruled era Rhodesia.

It's too despicable for words -- white trash -- filthy scum -- now he gets a trial & all that -- people are sick --
best tied to a stump in a swamp, to be left for the rattlers flies & alligators -- to show people that America is serious once and for all about eliminating hate crime
