Proving that he is the G.O.A.T.

"If the NFL could swallow its pride, it would accept that this rule has caused nothing but absurdity and embarrassment, and drop its federal court appeal. Anything short of that, Brady should roll up the league's case and light a cigar with it. Because his numbers are proving more than any court case ever could."

In case you missed it, following a go-ahead 54-yard field goal by the Chargers, Pittsburgh received a kickoff with 2:56 remaining and the ball went out of the back of the end zone for a touchback. However, while the players jogged on and off the field, the game clock kept running. For 18 seconds. And no one on the field noticed. Not the players nor the coaches nor the officials nor the ESPN announcers. Fortunately for the Steelers, Bell scored on a 1-yard run as time expired, giving Pittsburgh a 24-20 victory.

Where is the outrage? If that had happened in Foxboro, it would be the top story on all the major news networks today and there would probably be a new thread here dedicated to it today. But since it happened in San Diego and it backfired on them (that's assuming it was an intentional effort to take time away from the Steelers, which I am not saying it was), no one really cares enough to even raise the question. Just sayin'.

The Colts (or at least one of them) are going out of their way not to make the same mistake as some of the Patriots previous opponents this season and refusing to even say their name...

From Barstool (click the link and watch the vid, pretty funny):

http://www.barstoolsports.com/boston/the-colts-refusing-to-say-the-patriots-or-acknowledge-any-of-the-players-is-absolutely-hysterical/

My goodness is every other team in the NFL adorable. Oh nooooo don’t say their names! Don’t bring up the big bad bullies! Who are we even playing? I’m not sure, I’d rather not mention them in case their ears start burning and it upsets them more. We’ve joked that Belichick is the Hoodie but in reality, he and the Patriots are Voldemort. Don’t piss them off, don’t say their names and just pray that they don’t show up to murder everyone and brand your forehead so everyone remembers the time they destroyed your life.

I think you over-estimate how much people actually think about the Patios, er, whatever they're called.

How so? My point was that no one even blinked about the 18 second runoff the clock in San Diego. I guarantee that would have been a huge story had it happened in New England. Are you saying I'm wrong about that? Really?

I think you are getting a persecution complex. There were plenty of stories about the clock run-off and the league acknowledged it. Similar to the Detroit-Seattle finale, fans of the game know this was an officiating error and not a stadium/equipment error so no team could be potentially responsible.

Right, its a complex. So I must have imagined the way that "headphonegate" totally blew up as a mainstream network news issue for the entire country (not just "fans of the game") the day after game 1 in Foxboro and that it took several days for the media and others, including Steelers players and coaches, to come to their senses and realize that there was no merit to it as a potential cheating scandal. Yep, it's just me and my complex. Okay then.

You mean after opening Thursday night when there was exactly 1 game to talk about the next day and they were cleared by Friday afternoon? Maybe it was a bigger deal in New Hampshire, but most people I know didn't really think much of it.

Anyways, glad I could talk you off of the ledge.

How many games were played Monday night?

I'm not talking about your own personal water cooler chats, I'm talking about attention from national media and not just sports media. The Steelers themselves whined about it to anyone who would listen for days. Anyway, my question was more rhetorical in nature anyway, so time to move on.

Man. A trophy case full of Lombardi, they've completely eviscerated the office of commissioner and have established themselves as bigger and more important that the league itself, and they still complain. Rough crowd.

Not so much a complaint as an observation. In terms of rough crowd, I seem to recall the crowd here was pretty rough from late Jan until late August, but now everyone wants to act like nothing happened. Go figure.

They won. They won it all. In court, on the field, everywhere.

Here...

I sincerely, deeply from the lowest reaches of my pathetic heart deeply, sincerely apologize with every fiber of my being ever even thinking anything even remotely negative about the Patriots or anyone of any kind in the entire New England geographic area.

Better?

Now, how about some let it go, Elsa?

Everybody was talking Green Bay Packers.

Well, I wasn't one of them. Most people I knew and talked with (and I'm in NYC, so there's no love for Nuevo Inglaterra) saw it as another boneheaded Goodell mess, and an excuse for sports media to keep the NFL in the news during the off season. I think the response in this thread was just teasing the twice daily "PATRIOTS CHAMPS!!! DOOM WILL RISE!!!" posts. So you see, you brought this all upon yourself 😉

Anyways, moving on...

Besides that failed punt play, Indy hung with them. I was expecting NE to drop more points on the board the way both teams have been playing so far. The Pats are a good football team.

That play has a couple names, The Swinging Gate, The Muddle Huddle. For it to work, the ball has to be snapped immediately.

Don't think it's even been run with any success in the NFL. I grew up with that play in local lore because the high school I went to, our rival beat us once in the late 70s with it.

The percentage of success I think is higher on two-point conversion attempts or other situations by the goal line with a much shorter field.

Sure glad the Steelers have a bye week next week.

Oh wait, they are playing KC.

Don't get too used to it, it was only The Bears.

Packers were lucky to get ahead of the Chargers early - allowing 500+ passing yards from Rivers feels almost like a loss, but we'll take a W any way we can.

Is there any team that has underachieved more than the Chargers in the past 10 years? The Giants would be a dynasty (more than 2 underdog Super Bowls) with Philip Rivers had they not had their blinders set on Eli.

yea I don't think it has ever worked in a pro game either. I think pagano sealed his fate with that one. funny, harbaugh's name has been thrown around as his replacement and they had a wonderful punt play this weekend also.

I don't know if the Cowboys will win another game until after Romo returns. That is all.
