Being so disillusioned with your country that you decide to vote for Donald Trump, that I could understand.

Losing your trust in the process and just deciding to drop out, not vote, move to the woods, unhook from the grid, that I understand.

This - I DO NOT understand. How did we get to this point where young people wish to join our enemy?

Feds: Mississippi couple planned to join ISIS in Syria

Two Mississippi residents were arrested last weekend and charged with attempting to provide material support to ISIS, according to a law enforcement official.

Muhammad Oda Dakhlalla and Jaelyn Delshaun Young were arrested at a Mississippi airport on Saturday. Authorities say they were planning to travel overseas to join the terror group.

An initial court appearance from Monday was continued to today, when a criminal complaint will be announced.

CNN obtained a copy of the criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court. Law enforcement sources confirmed it is genuine but said the final version of the complaint could change.

According to the criminal complaint, Young and her soon-to-be husband were planning to fly from Mississippi to Europe, then travel to Syria and join ISIS.

It was not immediately clear whether they had obtained legal representation. Family members could not be immediately reached for comment.

The criminal complaint details what federal investigators say were the couple's plans to travel to Syria and join ISIS, as allegedly communicated through social media to two FBI employees over the past several months.

Among the allegations:

-- Young wrote of her plans to marry Dakhlalla so the two could travel to Syria together. She confirmed that the wedding took place in June, and said the couple's cover story would be that they were flying to Europe on their honeymoon. To avoid suspicion, "We won't be flying to Istanbul. We will fly to a different country and take a bus."

-- "I am good with computers, education and media," Dakhlalla allegedly wrote in one message to an FBI employee. "What could I contribute?"

-- The couple repeatedly wrote about their difficulties getting passports and their hopes to make it overseas before the end of Ramadan. "We can't make any further movements until our passports come in," Dakhlalla allegedly wrote. "We got them expedited but until then we are stuck in a rut."

-- In a July message, Young allegedly praised the July 16 attacks at military centers in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in which four Marines and a sailor were killed. "The numbers of supporters are growing," she said.

-- "Salaam again," Dakhlalla allegedly wrote in a message to an FBI employee. "I wanted to ask about the military experience there. Would I be with people that speak English as well or do they put me with everyone at basic training? I am excited about coming...but I feel I won't know what all I will be doing."

-- Last week, the couple allegedly purchased plane tickets to fly from Columbus, Mississippi, to arrive at their final ticketed destination of Istanbul, Turkey.

According to the law enforcement official, Dakhlalla is the son of a local imam, Young is the daughter of a Vicksburg, Mississippi, police officer and a recent convert to Islam.

Both are former Mississippi State University students, according to university spokesperson Sid Salter. Dakhlalla, 22, of Starkville, Mississippi, graduated in the spring with a degree in psychology, and Young, 19, was last enrolled in the spring as a sophomore studying chemistry.

According to Salter, the university was contacted by MSU Police Saturday regarding the arrest of the former students at the Golden Triangle Regional Airport.

Could have sworn I've read multiple times on the WP that this was only a European problem?

Here is the recipe:

Mix:

One part youthful zeal
One part idealism
One part ignorance
One part religion

Shake well.

Now add:

One shovelful: Reactionary religious polarization and mainstreaming of extremist religious attitudes, Christian and Islamic brand

One pigslop bucket: Media sensationalism and glorification

Throw in a heaping helping of arms production...

To taste, add corporate interest, to make the whole thing rise

Now bake until black in an oven of brainwashed idiocy, in a country rapidly being dumbed down to Dark Ages levels.

Do not let cool, serves the whole planet.

How did we get to this point where young people wish to join our enemy?

Wasn't McCarthy trying to save our young from becoming commies in the '50's, while burning at the stake every American who wasn't a communist?

There are two questions in the topic, le Brer did a good job with an explanation on Why they wanted to go.

The second question (or follow up is) what should the US do about this scenario of people wanting to leave here to join Isis? I think the answer is, if they are identified as wanting to go there, give them a one way exit with a no entry passport condition. That way if they go, they do not come back to do anything in this country.

There is this problem of people going overseas, getting training and coming back here to use that training, that needs to be dealt with.

Realistically if they go there, more likely than not they will not be coming back here, but the passport loophole has to be closed. Should we stop them from going there if we know that is what they want to do? I don't think so, you don't need to spend taxpayer money and court time to punish them here. Let them go, just don't let them return.

I am also not in favor of the FBI entrapment tactics that were used in this case. With all the NSA spyng, they couldn't find anybody over there to surveill, they had to create a scenario to prosecute them with? Nobody respects a government that lies, which is why we get little cooperation from other countries. I know there are those that get upset and say we have to stop them from going there, WHY? if it is their religious belief, let them go and let the other countries deal with that.
