And tonight we learned that Melania is a big liar too. Hard to believe that she didn't think that people wouldn't notice she plagerized Michelle Obama's speech. I guess lying runs in that family.

Yes. Listen to lines of both speeches, and they seem very very similar. In Trump world, nothing is off limits. With Trump's small staff, it's probably easier just to lift lines from someone else's work.

Amazing that is this day and age, someone somewhere thought it was a good idea to essentially plagiarize such a public speech. I'll even give Melania the benefit of the doubt and say she didn't know, but the speech writer and campaign staff surely must have known, way too similar to just be coincidence. Either way, it raises more questions about the kind of people the Trumps surround themselves with...and these are the people that so many of you want to see running this country, good grief!

The Washington Post has them side by side, almost like mirror images of each other:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/video/politics/melania-trumps-rnc-speech-vs-michelle-obamas-2008-dnc-speech/2016/07/19/ce608edc-4d71-11e6-bf27-405106836f96_video.html

Even the conservative stalwarts in the media can't ignore this one...

No big deal. Obama has done it. Biden has done it. Hillary has probably done it, although I can't remember an incident. Good speeches are meant to be shared. 😉

The fact checkers should have a blast shredding tonight's whatever you want to call it.

GOP Convention Opens in Cleveland
Republican speakers twist facts on immigration, crime, Benghazi and employment.
By Lori Robertson
Posted on July 19, 2016

Summary

CLEVELAND — The 2016 Republican National Convention opened with the first day’s theme “Make America Safe Again.” But in some cases the facts weren’t safe from distortion:

- Two security contractors at the CIA annex in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012, repeated their claim that they were told to “stand down” and not help Americans under attack. But multiple official reports say such an order was never issued.
- The sister of a slain Border Patrol agent said President Obama has left “border patrol agents thinly equipped,” and undermanned. In fact, both funding and staffing have increased under Obama.
- A Senate candidate claimed “neighborhoods have become more violent” under President Obama. In fact, the violent crime rate has gone down 20 percent under Obama, as of the most recent FBI statistics for 2014.
- Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Rep. Michael McCaul both wrongly claimed that Hillary Clinton supports “open borders.” She supported a bill that would have created a path to citizenship for those in the country illegally, but it also would have increased border security.
- Giuliani said that Clinton “advocated for the overthrow of Moammar Gadhafi in Libya” and should be “accountable” for the country’s chaos. But he failed to mention that Trump, at the time, also supported the ouster of Gadhafi.
- Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions claimed that wages “have fallen,” when they’re up under Obama. He blamed immigration for a low labor force participation rate, when it’s mainly the result of demographics, including the aging of baby boomers.

Note to Readers:
Our managing editor, Lori Robertson, is on the scene in Cleveland. This story was written with the help of the entire staff, based in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Next week, we will dispatch our staffers in Philadelphia for the Democratic convention. We intend to vet the major speeches at both conventions for factual accuracy, applying the same standards to both.

I didn't know Melania is running for office. She is sure getting a lot of attention from the MSM about one paragraph in her speech last nite.

This is a clear signal that Hillary is more trustworthy.

I am starting to think it is impossible for any Trump supporter to discuss the Trump campaign on its own merits without mentioning Hillary. It's like a magic act...don't look at what the right hand is doing, just focus at the left hand.

And as to top it all off, she rickrolled all of us!! Grin

In an even stranger twist, some on social media posited that Trump surreptitiously Rickrolled -- a common Internet meme involving singer Rick Astley -- everyone in the middle of her speech. "He will never give up," she said of her husband. "And most importantly, he will never, ever let you down."

The chorus of the 80s classic sounds very similar: "Never gonna give you up/ Never gonna let you down/ Never gonna run around and desert you."

What her here:

It doesn't bother me that much that she did it, and as you said she probably didn't even know it was plagiarized. It really doesn't even bother me too much that her speech writers did it. But what is really telling is that once it was exposed the Trump campaign is denying that it happened, even though there is absolutely no doubt that it did. They are not smart enough to admit the mistake, fire somebody, and move on. It's that lack of judgement after the fact that I find most troubling.

Plagiarism? Maybe she was just "inspired" by Michelle's speech. You know like when rock bands "cover" old blues songs? 😉

I agree with this, how the campaign responds can be telling and clearly their political inexperience here is showing.

The two main speeches from Trump and Pence had better not get bungled.

My favorite part is that yesterday she said that she wrote the speech herself with very, very little outside help, and today it's all the speech writer's fault. Well, ok then.

"While we can understand where some might see some similarity between Mrs. Trump's speech and past remarks of Mrs. Obama, that does not take away from the heartfelt and beautiful sentiments emanating from the stage last night. Today, we are focusing on what should be an exciting second day of the convention as we continue on the march to making America great again. Thank you."

Not that hard.

It really was bound to happen. I'm trying to figure out how they are going to blame the Trump University scandal and Trump raping a 13 year old girl on Hillary.

Melania's plagiarism is a non-story to me, and I agree it's no worse than covering a song. And I agree with Bob that the real issue is the team's mishandling of the explanation. As Bbawk pointed out, the response should've been fairly simple, and they couldn't get it right. Let's hope they can explain their foreign policy decisions much better. With that being said, I hope liberals do not fall into the trap of pouncing on any little thing that comes up. The pouncing itself is the root of our country's problems, so liberals need to lead by example if they want to prop themselves up over the right.

I didn't hear either speech but maybe Melania's speech was similar because she brings up issues that Michelle's husband couldn't accomplish. I also heard it was similar to Laura Bush's in 2004. Just a thought. I'm voting for Gary Johnson. I have enough enough health issues. Voting for either one of the other two would make me wretch followed by uncontrollable puking.

After the claims that Melania wrote the speech followed by multiple denials about plagiarism and instead blaming those evil-doers in the media for ginning it all up, we find out there was indeed a speechwriter and the speech writer did indeed intentionally plagiarize from Michelle Obama's speech. Is anyone surprised? #parforthecourse

The more plausible explanation is that this was an inside job, as noted by James Carville, longtime Clinton advisor and staunch Democrat:

Carville noted that many Republicans have told him they feel the only way to save their party in light of Trump's nomination is for Trump to "lose big" in November.

With a virtual "sweatshop" of speechwriters churning out speeches for conventions, one was likely to be a Republican who doesn't like Trump, Carville said. The paraphrased words of Michelle Obama's 2008 Democratic National Committee speech were put into the Melania Trump speech, then, once the speech was delivered, that person contacted the press and alerted them, according to the theory.

With the story coming out today from Meredith McIver, Carville's theory is shown to be nonsense. But it really doesn't matter because the real damage was caused by the after-the-fact reaction from the Trump campaign not the act of plagiarism itself.

I am glad that's settled... What will CNN talk about now? The MSM was spending more resources looking into this silly speech than covering Hillarys emails..
