Donald Trump Is Making America Meaner
Donald Trump Is Making America Meaner
Nicholas Kristof AUG. 13, 2016FOREST GROVE, Ore. — ALL across America, in little towns like this one, Donald Trump is mainstreaming hate.
This community of Forest Grove, near the farm where I grew up in western Oregon, has historically been a charming, friendly and welcoming community. But in the middle of a physics class at the high school one day this spring, a group of white students suddenly began jeering at their Latino classmates and chanting: “Build a wall! Build a wall!”
The same white students had earlier chanted “Trump! Trump! Trump!” Soon afterward, a student hung a homemade banner in the school reading, “Build a Wall,” prompting Latinos at area schools to stage a walkout.
“They openly express their dislike of my race,” Briana Larios, a 15-year-old Mexican-American honor roll student who hopes to go to Harvard, said of some of her white classmates. Wounded by accusations that she doesn’t belong in the country in which she was born, Briana is thinking of being home-schooled rather than returning to the high school when classes resume.
“People now feel that it is O.K. to say things that they might not have said a year ago,” she said. “Trump played a big role.”...
Hey, he ate a taco bowl. What more do you want?
Oh c'mon Bob, those who have the feelings the students had did not just develop them in the last year that the Trump campaign has been in place. They had these beliefs long before that. If they want to use Trump as their poster boy, that is THEIR decision. He did not ask for that. Some people do not want integration in their schools, neighborhoods, communities. Yeah that word integration is really old, but still the issues are there. It may be the law of the land, but there are those who do not like that law and prefer to be among their own people, racially, culturally, and/or religiously.
Governments should not be telling communities all over the country what they have to do. Government has been doing that. They tell people that they must accept homosexuality, many do not want to. They tell people they have to embrace all other races, many do not want to.
Why can't states and communities decide for themselves how to handle these issues? Why is it done at the federal level?

Because the US has a constitution that says people have equal rights. You are welcome to be a racist in your mind and to hate whoever you want, but you are not allowed to discriminate by providing rights to one group (race, religion, etc) that are not provided to another. That is called equal protection under the law, and that is one of the major reasons why America is such a great nation. If you don't like it, there are many other countries you can move to where it is legal to discriminate against whatever group you dislike.
It's not just in the U.S. Here in the UK the rise of UKIP and the recent referendum on leaving the EU has seen a spike in hate crimes on foreigners, xenophobia and yup, just plain meanness. Ugly country I live in at the minute, really ugly and unpleasant! The people spewing the rhetoric own the consequences of that rhetoric...

I am with gina on this. Let's repeal the 19th Amendment and take away women's right to vote. Then, let's get her fired from her job and hae her replacement be a man. After all, if we want to discriminate against women, according to gina, we can!

They may have had the beliefs before, but now they have a leader who validates those feelings. How nice for them.

So you find the most Trump-hostile publication, who takes the comments of a 15 year-old and treats it like Solomon, and expect everyone to believe it on face value? Real depth in the reporting and analysis there.
How is in not possible to believe that people are tired of unchecked immigration, and its not an expression of racism? Why do some fall for the media-driven cattle call that everyone who is questioning the joke of a border we have down south, or the blanket offers to resettle refugees from the mideast, is an automatic racist? These are unskilled people who become instant wards of the state for decades. It's not like our economy is creating lots of opportunity at the bottom - nor will it any time soon without dramatic policy changes.
While others believe we have "unchecked immigration" and keep talking about the border or a wall....

According to the first article, we have more immigrants from China and India.... not sure if they fall into your 'unskilled" category....
How is in not possible to believe that people are tired of unchecked immigration, and its not an expression of racism?
Umm...the girl in question is a natural born citizen. The judge Trump criticized because of his heritage is a natural born citizen. Khizr Khan is an American citizen whose son died defending this country. What does any of this have to do with "unchecked immigration"? Do you really believe that the fact that we need immigration reform excuses Trump's use of irrational fear to fuel racist vehemence?

You're better than that, Rich. You're the last guy I'd ever think that would fall for Trump's reality TV populism.

And I guess there haven't been countless demonstrations, some with accompanied violence, where Hispanic protesters are waving Mexican and other flags, demanding freedom to do as they like in this country, illegal or not? No doubt Trump is a focal point, but their actions - and our country's pathetic inability to maintain immigration standards - have also brought this.

If there is a current immigration problem, and I'm not sure there is since there are more Mexicans going back home than arriving, there is a way to address this in a respectful way without referring to anyone with brown skin or a Muslim background as a murderer, rapist or terrorist. And as pointed out, it doesn't seem to matter to Trump if some of these people are actually US citizens. What ever happened to the US Constitution and equal protection under the law? Words matter and temperament matter, and you can't blame Trump on anyone else. The fact that you are trying to put the blame for Trump on others and are making excuses for him shows that you don't really don't think Trump will be a good president. I actually feel sorry for the GOP right now as they sold their soul to the devil and now they can't seem to take it back.

I'm not buying Trump's nonsense Hawk, but I'm also not using blaming him exclusively for every PC-fueled complaint progressive rags like the NYT's wants to grease the public with.

Not sure that 140,000 over a five year period balances with tens of millions over many decades. But if that satisfies some, so be it...

You're not buying his "nonsense", but you complain about the media outlets who are reporting on what he says/does and calling it out as nonsense. Alrighty then.

Mexican, Honduran, and Guatemalan nationals are crossing our southern border illegally. Why is keeping people who aren't U.S. citizens out racist? It has nothing to do with geneology. It's the country of origin. I like how people use the term racist when it doesn't apply. Anything to make the opposition look unfit in some way. Straight out of the Alinsky playbook.

Wrong thread. There is nothing in this thread about people crossing borders illegally. Read the posted article. It is about American citizens being harassed by people following the example set by Trump.

Keeping people out who don't belong isn't racist if it is done evenly. However, stating a natural born US citizen can't do his job as a judge because he is of Mexican heritage is racist. Making comments about the Muslim background of a family of a US soldier who died in action is racist. And further, building a wall will do nothing. As stated before, more Mexicans are leaving the US to go home than are arriving in the US. So is the wall supposed to keep them in? I certainly don't support illegal immigration, but I think this has become a political pawn by blaming people as a scapegoat based on race.
Where was the NYT when the San Jose Democrats were running wild beating down children and sucker punching the elderly. Now Trump supporters need to feel ashamed because a thin skinned latino was subjected to immature high school taunts and it makes the front page.
Now Trump supporters need to feel ashamed
Well, at least you got that much right.

It's about Trump's policy that's in question. The article blames Trump for the behavior of some of the students does it not? That's the link. Again, why is it racist to secure our borders? It has nothing to do with race. The term is thrown around very easily these days and used out of context. It's where their coming from that matters. Some of the students were obviously way out of line with their remarks and should be dealt with accordingly.

How do we keep people out evenly? Being a Mexican isn't a race. It's a nationality by the way. Islam is not a race. It's a religion. More illegals are returning home because of our booming economy. Got it.

Where did you get all that from? But, I will say I think the Muslim system is better, the Man has to be the provider, if a woman works she can keep her earnings and they should not be used to support the household, and yes the man is the head of things, but if he is a good man, he will consider her feelings, value her opinions and care what she thinks. Woman was made as a companion for man, to help him, to have his children. She should not have to be the American ideal. If men were decent, honest and cared about their communities, she should not have to vote and worry about how things are run. Her concerns should be her family and her partner, husband.
Your Bible explained this somewhat in the part about head coverings. Man is to be the glory of God, and emulate the virtues he placed in him. Women are the glory of man, and thus should have a head covering as a sign of authority and should have a head covering when she prays. In Islam she should also have a head covering WHEN she prays. The rest of the time she should be modest, not flashy drawing undue attention to herself encouraging temptation (fitnah).

Women who are working should not be replaced just because they are women. If they have chosen to work and are qualified, they should be able to continue doing so. My thing is that they should have a choice to work or not. The Taliban provided women with a monthly stipend so that they did not HAVE to work, they could be home with their children while their men were off fighting. I agree with that, there should be some compensation for women and their children so that they are taken care of.
