This is not directed at any specific poster but just a sense I get from reading threads in the Whipping Post on varying issues: Sometimes these discussions make me wonder if it is only possible for some folks to see issues through a political lens.If so it's a shame because things are rarely that simple. Obsession with promoting or defending against a political position can obscure the underlying issue. But I suppose it makes good sport.

And the republicans will use it to rile up parts of their base...also using it for political reasons......hmmm.......
How so? I don't hear many of them complaining about slavery. Which ones?
But if you care to take a look back, Republicans ENDED slavery. The party was founded primarily for that expressed purpose......hmmm.....
You are correct....so what happened???? How did it end up being the party of discrimination based on personal opinion of what they believe is "right" like making decisions based on religious fanaticism....making decisions for women...how is it this party stole all our rights based on fear and lead us into 2 wars and financial destruction....Things have changed drastically since the creation of the GOP
Home run post!

Still a bitt on he fence about his one. The /swastika was used only for a short time in Germany; only in association with the Nazi Party. The Confederacy was about more than slavery; but that was the biggest issue in he Civil War. If is like the German flag is OK; if its like the Swastika I say no ban it. I'm leaning towards the latter.
Actually the swastika has been used for thousands of years as a sacred symbol of eastern religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism. The Nazi's adopted it as their symbol in the 1920's and it's meaning was forever changed. Any prior meaning became irrelevant, at least in the western world.
In much the same way, whatever the confederate flag may have symbolized historically has no relevance in the current discussion regarding racism. The specific flag at the center of the debate, the one flown at the SC capitol, was never even flown there until 1961 when it was raise as a symbol of resistance against racial desegregation. It was raised to symbolize racial oppression and that is the only reason it is there. Every other rationalization about what it represented a century earlier is just noise. It does not belong on state property and needs to come down.
Should it be banned? No. If individuals want to display that flag they have that right and should continue to have that right. In my personal opinion it just makes them look stupid. Typically when I see it here in NC it's displayed on a piece of sh!t pickup truck that has chrome gonads hanging from the rear bumper. Southern pride? Really?

I'm well aware of the history of the Swastika; should have been specific to banning it "In Germany" and my feelings are somewhat aligned the same re: The Rebel Flag. Again; both of their purposed shared no good ideology

I agree with this sentiment. In Jacksonville, Florida, some time ago there was much uproar over changing the name of Nathan Bedford Forrest High School. At first I thought, we cannot change history, this guy was a Civil War legend for the South, leave the name alone - that is until I learned that officials changed the name to this in the 60's or whenever - as a specific and deliberate thumb of the nose to desegregation. I changed my opinion when I learned that and was OK with changing the name, which they did.

how is it this party stole all our rights based on fear and lead us into 2 wars and financial destruction
1. Stolen all our rights based on fear? Exactly which rights have they stolen?
2. The decision to go to war was put to a vote and passed by both parties.
3. The roots of so-called financial destruction were planted by passage of the CRA

This whole escapade when boiled down has little or nothing to do with slavery, racism, flags, what have you. That's all just static. This is ALL about ostracizing a region of the country that doesn't vote for Democrats. Pure and simple, and that's all it is. If the South was made up of blue states all you would hear is crickets.

I guess you for got about all the bugging of our own citizens...the stripping of our privacy
2. The decision to go to war was put to a vote and passed by both parties.
predicated on lies and so called weapons of mass destruction that didn't exist except the ones conjured up by Bush and Cheney
3. The roots of so-called financial destruction were planted by passage of the CRA
Bush was the man during the time it all fell apart....I remember getting a $600 tax break and then Bush asking for Billions for his war....didn't quite make sense to me....if you need billions for your war why am I getting 600 from the govt????....
You didn't mention any of then other issues like religious fanatics or women's rights to make their own decisions about their bodies.
The GOP is only in name the party that set slaves free....Since the poorest and least educated states are also lead by the GOP I'd say there are a lot more issues about how it's lead and what it really stands for

This is really all about taking the focus off the guns' role in the death of those people. Once the flag is gone, it will be something else. Eventually it will be guns. Responsible gun owners need to get on board and find effective means to keep guns out of the hands of the unstable.
Take the lead.

A racist murdering nine people in a church is "static?"
That's an odd screen one is watching if that's what is to be dismissed as "static."
If those murders don't happen, none of this whole business with whatever flag would be happening. None.
Maybe the racist murderer was actually a leftist plant false flag operation that was part of an elaborate hoax in order to isolate geographic voting blocs, keying off public reaction to the use of a Confederate flag. That could happen, I suppose.
Some folks are carrying on that the Democrats are going after the American flag next. That's some scary stuff.

Eventually it will be guns.
No, it won't. Not now, not tomorrow, not ever.

Treating a minor symptom of major disease.
As much as I will not really miss the confederate flag, it's removal is really akin to yanking a band-aid off of a festering wound. I hope the results bring about good changes.

1. At last look, women are still making their own decisions about their bodies. Try again, what other rights have religious fanatics and GOP stolen from us? BTW, the current President expanded domestic surveillance.
2. Those same States were the poorest and least educated when they were led by Democrats. This didn't come about suddenly when the GOP took control.

I'd agree with you more strongly if the murders hadn't almost been pushed to the side by side chatter - slavery, Jim Crow laws, use of the N-word, the Confederate flag, and what not.
No, the murders are not static, but the rest of it is. Again, just a way to ostracize red states. Hatred for the South hardly started with this incident, but provides a great opportunity to gin up further hatred and that's exactly what we're seeing.
Don't debate, destroy!

Slavery is dead and gone. There has been no living slave or slave owner for many decades. Isn't it time we let that baby go? I realize that Democrats still use it for political reasons, but I question the effectiveness of doing so at this point...
But I realize they can still use slavery to rile up a key segment of their support structure even though it ended 150 years ago, but is this really healthy? Not for anybody other than the politician or race baiter desperate to retain power. That doesn't seem like a good enough reason to me, but that's the way she rolls.
Slavery is not dead and gone in America or anywhere else in the world. you should educate yourself about modern day slavery.

Actually, that's already started.

Congratulations to my former home state of Alabama for removing the flag in an unceremonious manner. No politicking or pandering - just take the flag down. Recently, Alabama even legalized same sex marriage. Would somebody please call Mr. Young! 😉
Now that the issue of racial hatred (especially in the south) has been addressed - now that an offending symbol has been removed - I would like to see the same energies devoted to the elimination of inner-city crime (especially murder) in areas like Chicago, Detroit, Baltimore and other places.
And I am not trying to be snide in any way.

So far, so good. I feel pretty strong that the haters and naysayers would be surprised what it's really like down here if they ever saw if for themselves.

Indicative of where we are. Seems as if everything is offensive to one group or another, and nothing can be offensive. But if everything is offensive, then nothing is.

WOW, just WOW Alloak. With all due respect you used to be a reasonable person to debate with but you are posting more and more like Mule's incoherent rants every day. Turning every thread into a blue vs. red pissing match, insulting the liberals instead of debating the issue, ignoring posts that prove you wrong. etc. etc.
I expect next you will turn every topic into a reason to trash Obama like your buddy Mule.
What happened to you recently to make you go off the deep end?

I'm a transplant to Alabama so I feel I can make an objective judgment as an outsider would. If I would have believed the stereotypes coming in I would have thought I'd be surrounded by stupid, poor people and blatant racism all around. Actually I found the exact opposite to be true. In spades.
I'm a Southerner, but never claimed to know everything about the rest of the country. Have no idea where you're coming from on that.

I love California (if money was no object that's where I'd be - Monterrey Peninsula) and Chicago! I'd strongly urge anybody who's never visited those places to definitely do so.
