Citizens Guarding the Military?

Seems a little backwards, but should we be surprised?
Despite warnings and threats that military personnel are a target, they're still prohibited from carrying a firearm. Sitting ducks in a "gun free" zone. But alas, ordinary citizens are stepping up to stand guard. Others are helping out by supplying the citizen guards with food and beverages while on duty. Real Americans. Thank you all.
"say hello to my little friend"

Wow.

Chattanooga is a perfect example of gun control lunacy. Gun laws don't faze people like mohammed __________. Establishing gun free zones and taking guns away from the good guys just gets people killed.

You are using one example to judge a policy, something you mocked not too long ago. I guess when it works for you, it's ok.

Well, I guess they have to do something now that the cattle guy isn't getting publicity on Fox News anymore.

That's false. Chattanooga is just the latest example.

Why military personal can't carry weapons on base. Seems it was implemented by George Bush Senior and carried over by every President since.
Lest anyone think I am pointing fingers at any particular politician or party this is from a Right Wing website so should appeal to our conservative brothers here.

Times have changed. There have been terror threats against the US Military as well as police officers. We have known that ISIS has been calling for jihad against military personnel inside the USA. The warnings were apparently disregarded.

I agree. We have had a shooting in 2 military locations. We need armed guards at all of the.
We have had mass shootings at grammar schools, high schools and colleges. Turn them into armed camps.
Shopping malls, amusement parks and sports stadiums are prime targets for terrorism. Let's make them safe by putting armed guards everywhere.
We have had people taking shots at cars on interstates. Drones, helicopters roving armed guards in all of them.
Seal the borders! Armed fighters along the entire border, both Mexico and Canada. Keep those terrorists out.
I think we have solved the unemployment problem. Now all we need is a way to pay for it. Tax the middle class!!!!! Yeah, that's the ticket.

Nice swerve, defection or whatever you guys are calling it today....
How about taking threats seriously and just let soldiers arm themselves. They're plenty capable.

The guy drove up in a car, got out and started firing into the building. The Marines inside are going about their business and would not have noticed anything until the shots started coming in. How would they respond? By taking cover. If they were armed, I doubt very much would have been different.
As for my "swerve", my point is "how far are we going to take this?" More people have been killed in schools than at military sites.

I don't know, but I think the better question is to ask why this was allowed to happen as well as how it can be prevented in the future. mohammed ________ might have gotten off a few rounds, but you think he has a chance in hell against multiple armed Marines? They died needlessly and totally defenseless in a gun free zone.

Threats against military sites and personnel have been expressly stated. We just keep blowing those off?

Enforce our current gun laws. House to house searches until we get all the unregistered weapons. Goose step right into the gang territories and into any household that might be suspected of having an unregistered weapon. Once these current laws are enforced we will see if we need new laws.
We can pay for it by pulling out of Afghanistan and putting those resources into the war at home. Get the guns out of the hands of our domestic murderers. Protect our homeland!

For the record, I think they should lift the ban on our servicemen carrying guns on base. Even if lifting the ban leads to more deaths than we currently have (suicides, accidents, and even a few murders), the ban just doesn't feel right to take away guns from those we are suppose to trust using those very very guns to protect us.

The answer to gun violence is obviously more guns, everywhere. Schools, churches, banks, courthouses, street corners. The other industrialized nations of the world with strict gun laws and exponentially lower gun related deaths are clearly on the wrong path.

but, but, but I thought military were bad, JADE HELM!!!!!! FEMA CAMPS!!!!! MARTIAL LAW!!!!!!

It's about time you got with the program!

Since the genie is out of the bottle, and you can't prevent bad guys from getting guns, I think we should arm everyone.
Just like the old West we should all be wearing holsters with our pearl handled six shooters ready and waiting.
This way if a bad guy starts shooting all the armed citizens can put a cap in them.

Raises an interesting question...why did the practice of carrying sidearms in hip holsters all but end in the west? I know some people still do it, but it is rare to see in most places. I mean if it obviously makes everyone safer then why didn't it become the norm everywhere instead of falling by the wayside?

In the old west they had to initiate the "no guns in town" laws to curb their high casualty/homicide rates. Lots of sources, newspaper articles from the day that spell this out.

Well then, I guess it must have worked at least to some degree. Go figure.

Growing up in a military family I don't remember seeing GI's carrying side arms. The Air Police, sure, but not the Enlisted Men or the Officers. As a kid I was always on base doing something. Swimming, bowling, going to the movies... whatever. Of course the guards were all armed so it would have been difficult to bring guns on base.
Maybe more metal detectors are the answer. I went with a friend to 3 Smithsonian museums on Monday. They all have metal detectors. Then we went to the ballpark and went through another bank of metal detectors.
That's probably a good industry to buy stock.
I do detest corporations that use fear to drive profits. But I guess that's the cost of the terrorists winning. I mean... the cost of safety. More hassle and less freedom.

Somewhere in Jannah Osama Bin Laden is hanging with his 40 ex-virgins smiling. Mission Accomplished!

Exactly.

Although the Public knows best, here is a statement from the Pentagon.
Pentagon does not support arming all military personnel, spokesman says

(CNN)—Speaking to reporters Wednesday, Department of Defense spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis reiterated the existing department policy of not supporting arming all military personnel.
Lawmakers and elected officials at the national, state and local levels have proposed changing the policy in the wake of a shooting at a Chatanooga recruiting station last week that left five servicemen killed.
"We do not support arming all military personnel," Davis said.
On Tuesday, the U.S. Marine Corps put out a statement saying, "While we greatly appreciate the support of the American public during this tragedy, we ask that citizens do not stand guard at our recruiting offices. Our continued public trust lies among our trained first responders for the safety of the communities where we live and work."

Now that you mention it, I grew up on air force bases as well and I don't remember anyone carrying weapons on base other than MPs and guards either. I don't remember anyone at my dad's office being armed, nor at the BX, bowling alley, barber shop, swimming pool, around base housing, church or anywhere else. This was certainly well before any ban on guns on bases.

Hmmmm, turns out there was an armed service member there who tried to shoot the guy. I wonder why the good guy with a gun wasn't able to stop the bad guy with a gun.

CNN)—He'd shot at a military recruitment center, drove off, and rammed the gates of a Navy reserve center. A service member inside the facility saw the threat posed by the heavily armed Mohammad Abdulazeez and opened fire.
But tragically, that didn't stop Abdulazeez.
