Immediately after the latest school shooting Senator Bloviate was the first to go running to the TV cameras:

“First of all, I want to send out my condolences and prayers to all those killed today”.

“I will be introducing legislation to take guns away from anyone who has not donated to my latest campaign”.

“There will be some who will try to block my useless and pandering gun control legislation. You know who they are. These are the American citizens who believe they have a constitutional right to defend themselves from the violent criminals roaming our streets”.

“And now a few words from another suck up politician while I slip out with my heavily armed security personnel so that I can go hunting and kill some defenseless but tasty animals with some of my major donors”.

“AMF”

They say that it is bad taste to talk about the politics of guns after a school shooting, but when is there not a school shooting? Seems like you can set your watch by it. Maybe that should be your clue.

Maybe it is just me but somehow it does not seem like it was convenient for a whole bunch of people.

People like Mule don't like to talk about school shootings, because they don't want to do anything about school shootings.

I’m sorry for those folks in TX. I feel for parents these days with the pressure they must feel while sending children off to school. It should be an easy routine thing. I hope we find an answer.

My post was written as satire.
No political party mentioned, just the reality of politicians using a tragedy to get free media time and lie to the people.

Legislation cannot change someone's mind.
If someone wants to kill, they will and there is nothing that can be done about it.

Get a life. Other countries do not have this problem. What you mean is that nothing can be done about gun violence without inconveniencing millions of Americans who have some kind of sick gun fetish. Weed is illegal in this country because some people "abuse" it and nobody dies, but instruments that easily kill tens of thousands of people every year need to be everywhere, in your opinion. The gun sales lobby has a great racket: "All these guns we've sold make the USA a very dangerous place... you better buy more guns to protect yourself."

Protection from tyranny is a lame excuse for kids dying because they went to school. Gandhi took down the British Empire without some super-sexy assault rifle.

Loud trucks that spout black exhaust and muscle cars squealin' tires in an otherwise peaceful area should be enough to make the pussies among us feel tough. Why do they have to have guns with which they take photographs of themselves and then shoot people?

I believe in profiling in all areas and agree with that sentiment applying it to mass shooters. Anyone who fits the mold and exhibits clues into a troubled psyche should be put under a microscope and face restrictions for obtaining lethal weapons.

I propose a BAN that should make schools a safer place.

BAN "Gun Free Zone" designations of schools.

When I was in high school many of us had firearms with us, mostly during hunting season. It wasn't unusual to see a truck parked in the lots with gun racks in the back window, usually with a rifle and a shotgun.
During hunting seasons you could often see firearms in the corner behind the teacher's desk where they were brought in by students and left so they wouldn't have to carry them around during class breaks.

Think of this, how often did school shootings occur before they began being designate "gun free"?

Dumbest. Idea. Ever.

Armed students makes absolutely no sense at all. I suppose if all of those 6 year olds at Sandy Hook were armed, they would have stopped that killer cold.

This is rediculous. This year we have had three TEACHERS accidently fire a gun on campus, one of which injured a student. That teacher was a firearms safety instructor.

Just wondering if back in your school days did any students bring an AR-15 to class so they could go hunting after school?

When I was in high school

First mistake. Evolution....we need to keep up with the times, not cling to the 50's and 60's.

many of us had firearms with us, mostly during hunting season.

And when a man in body armour walks in with an AR-15 and begins firing immediately into classrooms.....then what? Please detail your fantasy scenario. I can't wait to hear.

Think of this, how often did school shootings occur before they began being designate "gun free"?

Were AR-15's legal to own when you were in high school? Just curious.

I'm just patiently waiting for Jerry to come back and educate us that the AR in AR-15, does not stand for assult rifle, that it is not an assult rifle, and it is not any different than any other semi-automatic gun. He will completely ignore that it is the prefered weapon in many of these school shootings.

He will likely also ignore that there was a shooting at a Kansas megachurch yesterday, that was not in a gun free zone.

But yeah, what we need is more guns to keep us safer.

I'm completely fine with everything Democrats hopelessly attempt to achieve after every single one of these tragedies.

You can bet next time Democrats have the power to do so, there will be legislative action after the next school shooting. This WILL happen, unfortunately dozens or even hundreds will die in the meantime.

A another military style rifle. Another white gun nut with pictures of his guns by the way. It's really not hard to identify those who like their guns a little too much. Easily profiled. We should start doing it.

No it wasn't.

The kid used an every day ordinary shotgun and a revolver.

Nothing military or scary looking about either one.

I don't have to say it, you already did. Except that it's not the preferred weapon in many school shootings.

Which one? The one where the graduation celebration was taking place, or the one holding the funeral?

Cut the man some slack. His post is a reminder of a better era, when people weren't too idiotic, psycho, medicated or brainwashed to be trusted with guns. Reminded me of when I used to carry my Homelite chainsaw, 24" blade in full view sticking up out of my backpack, after work clearing slash, right in public in Olympia, into the bar, then stumbled into movie theater, longhaired and visibly drunk, with a chainsaw, nobody even blinked - that was as late as the mid 80's - whole country is radically changed since only 30 years ago. Not a gun, but still, you wouldn't get far walking around with a saw these days.

Jerry's post tells an important piece of the puzzle in my opinion.

That was a different time. With a different character of people. A different society. A different assortment of firearms.

As the mental makeup of our people have changed, as our culture has changed and as the number and type of guns have changed, indeed our actions, or approach and our laws must also change.

True, the guns used in this recent Santa Fe shooting could've been purchased by anyone in the 1950s or 1960s. A Remington 870 shotgun and a .38 revolver.

I presume this shooter used what was available to him, whatever his father had. If his father had had an AR15, that is what he would've used. If his father had only had a lever action rifle, that is probably what he would've used.

But it is never just the guns. It is true that access and availability of guns plays a huge role in what is happening. But it is also very true that people of our time seem drawn to this type of mass killing activity. We can't gain ground on preventing it until we look at every aspect.

A good guy with a gun does have a role. Hardening schools can have a role. Identifying and documenting suspicious statements and actions of individuals plays a role. Making gun ownership and purchase more restrictive and burdensome should also be in play. As should violent shooting video games or movies that glorify mass murder. Everything goes into this.

And while we look back at a simpler time over a half century before, we are reminded truly how much our world has changed and the incremental corrosion that has taken place within some of us and around all of us that has lead to people like Pagourtzis or Reinking or Cruz or Kelley.

Everything must be on the table and we must not let the extremes of either side control the debate.

If someone wants to kill, they will and there is nothing that can be done about it.

True. And Conservatives want to enable maximum body count thru minimum legislation.

Legislation cannot change the mind of someone who wants to kill.

Nice to see Ted Cruz say that the kids in Santa Fe were "sacrificed." It truly shows how he and his fellow NRA freeks feel about the importance of having weak gun laws over the protection of our children. I would personally use the word "slaughtered" or "murdered," as I doubt any of them willingly gave their lives for weak gun control laws, but maybe I missed that poll at the school before it happened.

Twitter, the prez's favorite friend, was lit up in response to Cruz's statements.

The mass murder of babies (abortion), so beloved by the left, has nothing to do with this thread.

Specifically, what “gun control” or other whiny-a$$ legislation do you believe would have any effect in stopping gun violence?

Come on big mouth, put up or shut up.

This is another dumb component of the conservative argument designed to kill intelligent conversation, where they assert that any proposed solution must in hindsight prevent each and every historical shooting spree equally, else that solution shall be deemed ineffective and not worth of discussion.

Republicans and the NRA: Maximum Body Count Thru Minimum Legislation (TM)

Same question for you that 2112 was too much a coward to answer:
