4oz. USPS 1st Class = $2.50; Media Mail = $2.69 ???

What the heck is going on with the USPS ???
Today, I checked the price to send out a 4 oz. vine seed:
First Class = $2.50
Media Mail = $2.69
$0.19 more to send it slower ???

The postal worker's union should at least hand out free KY.

Why worry?
The USPS only lost $750 million last quarter.

The Post Office is stuck between a rock and a hard place - it is forced to stay open on Saturday; forced to charge the same for unprofitable routes (go ship FEDEX or UPS to the middle of nowhere and you pay through the nose) has to fully fund their pensions; and therefore can't return to profitability. It is the must ungainly private/public combo extant.

Still one of the best postal services in the World

The biggest problem with the Post Office is that they pay the same rate to all workers throughout the country regardless of where it is and what the cost of living is. In almost all other professions people are paid according to the cost of living where they live and work is. A mail carrier in NYC or Long Island where the cost of living is very high make the same as a mail carrier in the sticks in Pennsylvania or Virginia where the cost of living is much less. Postal workers should be paid according to where they live and what the cost of living there is just like with other jobs. That would save a huge amount of money.

I'm assuming that you are declaring that the rate is fair for expensive places to live.

Yes, I live on Long Island and one of my best friends is a mail carrier and has been for 20 years and his pay is what I would consider fair for that job in NYC or on Long Island. My friend is single and lives comfortably. He would be able to live like a king if he lived in another part of the country with the same exact job.

I think you might be right for some professions 68 but I am a hiring manager for my engineering group and I can tell you when I look for a new engineer the salary is pretty much the same no matter the region of the country for my profession.
I live near Boston and I know I would have much more disposable income in other areas of the country but then again the questions is would I want to live in those other areas?
