ZBB and Sturgill's new albums

These are two of my favorite current ‘country’ artists. I’ve given a preliminary listen to both their new albums and frankly WTH?! I understand that artist’s like to evolve but what is up with the fascination with electronica? What I heard from ZBB is a train wreck of auto tune and synth. Yuck. I was hoping Jekyll + Hyde wasn’t a move in this direction, but sadly it was. Sounds like a 40 YO man starting a boy-band.
Sturgill Simpson’s new album may grow on me. His last album was awesome even though it took a while to get used to horns in country music. I guess this is a concept type recording. Sturgill is just….Sturgill.
If Jason Isbell’s next album comes out with a bunch of synthesizers and a Britney Spears guest appearance, I may cry!

The Sturgill album is a soundtrack to an Anime movie he is involved with so that is part of the reason for the sound. Plus he's just going to do whatever he wants, he's not interested in following trends otherwise he would have just been the face of modern country's new outlaw movement like they wanted him to do.
ZBB is just trying to sell albums. They have drifted away from their original sound on the past few albums, so that one isn't a surprise. I saw them on Fallon and turned it off after the first verse.

Sturg said in an interview something like, “I could keep making the same record over and over and have $80 million, but you’d probably find me hanging on the end of a rope.”
He said he spent a bunch time listening to his favorite from growing up, from rap to rock l and all in between, and wanted to make a rock record.
I haven’t listened yet, but really want to.

We might not like everything an artist puts out, but I like when people take chances and do something different instead of every album sounding the same, with the exception of AC/DC. Zac Brown Band are very talented and have alot of different influences. And they put on an awesome live show!!!

Oh, I agree with about everything you say and initially posted how artists evolve. But this new ZBB isn't Bob Dylan going electric. I appreciate about any music that is played on actual instruments and doesn't have vocals sounding like a constipated robot.

Nailed it.

I really liked the 42 minute anime movie. Well, it's more a trip than a movie. And yep i also dig most of the music.

Finally got around to listening to Sturgill’s tonight.
It.
Is.
Freaking.
Awesome.
Love it.

I've never had any interest in Zac Brown.
I do like Simpson and just recently picked up his Sound and Fury release. I like it. I will have to watch the Netflix thing at some point. This album keeps making me want to play it again. I don't know if anyone else feels like this, but the album he won all the awards for is my least favorite. The Sunday Valley stuff is good and Metamodern Sounds is probably my favorite. This newest one though keeps my attention.

Agreed. It is my favorite album of 2019 and 2019 had some great music.

Metamodern is by far my favorite of his several albums. It is a masterpiece. Every time I listen, I am floored by an aspect that I had not noticed before.
