YES: PROGENY – Live from Seventy-Two

Two Live Collections Debut Newly Discovered Recordings From The Prog-Rock Pioneer’s Acclaimed 1972 World Tour
Double-Disc, Triple-LP, And 14-Disc Boxed Set Available in May from Rhino
Yes was firing on all cylinders in the fall of 1972. The prog-rock pioneers’ fifth studio album Close To The Edge was a smash success as audiences around the world packed arenas to see the legendary group perform. The band captured the magic of that tour on its first live album, Yessongs. Released in 1973, the triple-LP sold over a million copies and blew minds with Roger Dean’s iconic artwork.
The band recently discovered recordings of seven complete concerts from the weeks leading up to the shows heard on Yessongs. The latest audio technology was used to restore the reel-to-reel recordings and bring out incredible sonic detail, creating an open, immediate sound that drops listeners right into the front row.
Rhino has assembled three new releases featuring previously unreleased music included on these newly discovered tapes.

Looks great, for me the highlights disc will do it for me.

Thank you. It's rare I look forward to a release these days.
As I much as I love the band, that 14 disc box set is pretty hardcore. It's not like "Close to the Edge" went in a different direction every night. I suspect the highlight disc may do it for me as well. I'll be interested to hear the quality of the recordings for sure, though.

I love Yes, but 14 discs is a bit much

I love Yes especially the Wakeman version of the group from the early 70's. saw them several times back in the day.
Every concert was different, even if the same setlist, so I can't wait for this release and already preordered the box set.

The 2CD Highlight is a shorter version of the live release Yessongs from that tour.
New 2CD:
1.Opening (Excerpt From Firebird Suite)
2.Siberian Khatru

5.Clap/Mood For A Day
6.And You And I
Disc Two
1.Close To The Edge
2.Excerpts From The Six Wives Of Henry VIII
3.Roundabout
4.Yours Is No Disgrace
Yessongs

The songs for Yessongs was culled from the concerts in boxset except some of the songs were edited. The nice thing about the box and 2cd set is the recordings hve not been tampered with so they are as they were recorded that night.

Every concert was different, even if the same setlist..
I was under the impression that arrangements were firm, and solos were close to note for note. Not so?
Blooby

Not so.
I have a lot of Yes bootlegs, and while the basic structure of the songs was pretty fixed, the solos and jams could and did vary widely from show to show.
More live Yes is a good thing, but I just don't see why I would listen to this when I could listen to Yessongs. Especially when some of my favorites from Yessongs are missing here. The Yessongs versions of Perpetual Change and Starship Trooper are absolutely epic, and the Long Distance Runaround/The Fish segment is one of the most mind-boggling bass demonstrations ever laid down by a human being.
I will probably pass on this, but it's the kind of thing I would be delighted to receive as a present. I need to start dropping hints....

The difference here will be better CD quality. commercial Yes CDs sound cold and two-dimensionall. Just threw out Close to the edge CD. Great music but awful CD. Will have to go for vinyl to ever hear that right. MFSL did wonders for Yes Album and Fragile. the holy grail would be a live release of Topgraphic Oceans. I can't believe no tape was rolling in that huge production.

Not related to Progeny but cool! Some cool old video of Yes, including pre-Steve Howe and pre Wakeman. Howe is in the clips starting at around 20:00. Bill Bruford on drums throughout. The Lost Broadcasts!

You might be interested in the Steven Wilson remix. The Bluray version has a vinyl needle drop transfer. http://yesworld.com/2013/08/close-to-the-edge-in-5-1-surround-and-stereo/

Here's a Q&A with the producer: http://yesworld.com/2015/03/yes-progeny-live-from-seventy-two/#6 Lots of info on the restoration of the live tapes.
