I know that Jimmy Herring has chops,but I could never get into his style. He always plays way too many notes in almost everything I hear from him. I got turned on to panic a couple of years before Mikey died. Got to see them 2 times with him. Enjoyed both shows. Thought that George McConnell ? was a great replacement,but I guess they made the right move because they certainly are alot bigger of a draw with Jimmy. Ehh.....what the hell do I know !

I agree and I'm a huge Jimmy Herring fan. Most people I know who were into WSP before Mikey Houser died agree that Herring is not that good of a fit with WSP. I saw WSP once and that was when they opened up for the Allmans in the summer of 2009, and it was an OK show but musically I was not that blown away and it was not akin to seeing bands like the Allmans or the dead; however I'm glad I saw WSP live at least once.

I became a WSP fan during the Houser years and remained a fan through the George years - and I think they are way better than ever with Herring. Just a massive upgrade in the lead guitar slot in my mind. I enjoy all the WSP eras - but I listen to way more Jimmy shows than all the other eras put together.
Incredibly, this September will mark 10 years of Jimmy in Panic. I still think of him joining WSP as kind of a new thing - but that obviously is not the case anymore.

As for this Mountain Jam - very cool to hear them do it. No real dual guitar attack with a Panic version - Bell is pretty strictly a rhythm player. But Jimmy does a fine job leading the band through the tune and plays some nice leads. It's only about 8 minutes or so - so doesn't go anywhere too deep or far out - they just scratch the surface of it really (which seems like a crazy thing to say about an 8 minute or so jam - but we all know that's barely getting warmed up in Mountain Jam terms) - but cool to hear them run through it.

With all due respect to Hauser, when he was ON there were none better, especially for WSP's sound, and when he was OFF he was terrible.... and unfortunately he wasn't ON that often.

Jimmy came in and immediately elevated that band and provided much needed consistency. Is his style the best fit? For my taste, no. I love Jimmy, but after about 4 songs, I feel like I've been beat over the head!

Do Panic write anything not in 2-4, 4-4, or shuffle time?

I like what I'm Herring.

I'm not a huge Panic fan, John Bell's voice really digs under my skin. I never really listened to the Houser era, so I can only speak to their past 10 years or so when I hear them at Wanee. Typically that was from my camp site while cooking dinner before the Allman Bros sets, but the past two years that they have headlined I've paid more attention - I find them exhausting. It's like one long, intense 2.5 hour song, but it's Herring that is definitely carrying the music throughout. It's not bad, I'm not hating - a lot of it I enjoy and is incredibly impressive - but I can only do it in small doses.

I like Jimmy Herring, he is a total space cadet, though his tone gets a little too crackly for me at times. I never thought he fit in with the Allman Bros, he isn't that melodic. I think his best setting is the Aquarium Rescue Unit where he can really go where ever.

x2 -- that 1st ARU CD -- both it & Frogwings, Jimmy really shines -- he does every time he plays, his tone does get a bit crackly for me too at times

I'm not a big Herring fan either - incredible talent but just not my thing.

That being said, the Allmans in Raleigh, 9/23/2000, is one of my all time favorite ABB shows.

Need some Herring? Listened to a DTB Christmas show from 12/26/07 show (i think that's the year), it has Jimmy sit in for the second set. WOW, they are a perfect match, and really had some great jams that night. Seek this one out and give it a spin if you want to hear Derek & Jimmy rocking the house.

The first ARU CD is amazing
Some of Herring's solos on the Frogwings CD are the best i've ever heard, but you have to suffer through Popper to get to them. Revisit the outtro jam on Pattern and Ganja.

My first intro to Herring was Jazz is Dead Great Sky River. To me that is the finest example of what he is capable of. Every time I have seen him live I am underwhelmed because it isn't even close to what I hear on Great Sky River and Frogwings.

My last attempt was a front row WSP show a few years ago and if Front Row didn't do it for me then nothing will for getting in to WSP. So glad I got to see Mikey ONCE at the first Bonnaroo.

I haven't heard a lot, but my favorite Herring work by far, and among my most listened to tracks of the last 10 years since I first got the boards, are Herring with ScoMule doing Devil Likes it Slow and Freeway Jam. Perfect fit!:

I wish Herring would play in a band like that. It really suits his style. I feel like he is a great player who still hasn't found his band. (Other than ScoMule)
