Woodstock Bands You Have Ever Seen

I read the Mountain thread and the mention of Woodstock and it got me thinking about the bands that played there I saw, obviously a long time later. So the ones I have seen are:
Richie Havens. One of the most boring things I have ever attended. He sat on a stool by himself and talked most of the time. I want to say it was a bill with some incarnation of Jefferson Airplane in the 90s. I didn't know he was the first performer of the festival which I guess is kind of cool.
Santana. Don't like him at all. I went because the Derek Trucks Band opened. I think that was the last time I got to see them.
Mountain of course. They were great at this blues fest I saw outside of Detroit.
Grateful Dead. I never saw Jerry but I've seen the various incarnations of them. I think I only saw Phil & Bob together twice. The Ratdog shows with the ABB several years ago were great btw.
The Who. I saw Roger Daltry on a British Rock Opera tour which was awesome. He had a symphony in the first set. They did a few Zep songs. Unreal.
Jefferson Airplane. I saw Jefferson Starship but it wasn't the same. I actually saw Mickey Thomas in a beer tent at a county fair. Felt bad for him.
Johnny Winter. I saw him twice. The last time was at The Chicago Blues Festival and he played the main stage with James Cotton. Cotton couldn't sing at the time but it was still cool seeing these iconic legends playing together.
Crosby Stills Nash and Young. Saw CSN once and I think by that time their vocals were kind of shot. Made it through one of the worst storms I ever experienced at a concert. We took cover in a parking garage. I have to give them credit. The show stopped but they came back out and finished it. Seen Neil a million times. Whatever he is doing at the moment I'll go see it. Even saw the Greendale thing at Radio City in New York.
Who has everyone seen? ๐ย

Everything in Moderation. Including Moderation.

1.ย The Who, probably four times.ย First time was in the Kenny Jones (drums) era, probably 1980.ย Can't rave about it.ย As Daltrey has said, "Kenny was a good drummer, he just wasn't the right drummer for The Who."ย They improved drastically once they got Zak Starkey on drums and they were great every other time I have seen them, all with Starkey.ย He is more in the mold of Keith Moon's manic style.ย The best was within a week of John Entwhistle dying.ย I thought the tour was going to be cancelled but Pino Palladino came in and learned all of their songs in one weekend.ย It was an emotional and inspiring performance, only the second show of the tour.
2.ย Santana, probably five times.ย The best:ย The Mountain Winery, at the time a 1,700 seat venue before they remodeled it, probably 1990.ย Carlos was obviously inspired, I think by the setting, and he did four consecutive nights with a varied theme each night:ย Rock, jazz, salsa, blues.ย I caught the rock show and they did a lot of Santana hits.ย Scotsman Alex Ligertwood was singing with Santana then and I've always thought he was great.ย I've also seen Carlos in a large shed when he wanted to talk (mostly social commentary) more than play, and the music was also watered down, stuff like "Make Somebody Happy"...........UGH.ย But that was only once.ย Normally Carlos brings the intensity and will blow you away for around 2-1/2 hours.ย ย
ย
3.ย Crosby, Stills and Nash (without Neil) four or five times.ย Always very good although the last time, probably 10 years ago, the vocals had diminished significantly, obviously due to age.
ย
4.ย Ten Years After, Shrine Auditorium, L.A.............guessing it was 1975.ย Don't remember much but I remember they were pretty good although towards the end Alvin Lee got pissed off about equipment malfunction and knocked over an amp.
ย
5.ย Never did see Creedence Clearwater Revival but I have seen John Fogerty probably five times and he NEVER disappoints.ย I laugh when someone says they've seen Creedence Clearwater Revisited.ย No Fogerty, no Creedence!
ย
6.ย Joan Baez.ย She did a tour with Steve Earle maybe 10 or 15 years ago when she was doing a bunch of Earle tunes, a tribute to his writing.ย She has a beautiful voice and overall that was a very good show, again at The Mountain Winery, an incredible venue.ย Earle came out after Joan's set and did his own show.ย If I remember they did a few tunes together.ย ย
ย
7.ย Johnny Winter.ย Probably five times going all the way back to maybe 1976 or '77.ย JOHNNY ALWAYS BROUGHT THE GOODS!ย Even when he was so frail that he sat in a chair for the entire show, it was some of the most down and dirty gut-busting blues I have ever heard.ย I did see him one more time after that and it was kinda sad, it was getting close to the end for him and he had slowed down a bit but still walked out there and put on a decent show (again he played seated of course).ย It was one of those touring rock shows with his brother Edgar on the bill, also Rick Derringer and Kim Simmonds (Savoy Brown).ย I never knew until that night that Derringer had turned into a serious Bible-banger.ย Edgar Winter, Derringer and Simmonds were all good.ย Johnny and Edgar did not play together, probably due to Johnny's diminished state.
ย
8.ย Joe Cocker.ย Bob1954 gave me a reminder, I had left him off of my list.ย Saw Joe twice, he was GREAT both times!ย Just the greatest groovin' R&B imaginable played by sterling musicians.
ย
That's it for me as far as Woodstock artists.ย I've often wondered how close The Allman Brothers Band came to being invited to play Woodstock.ย The Festival was in August 1969 only five months after ABB formed.ย Of course Bill Graham was heavily involved in selecting artists for Woodstock and also heavily involved with ABB in the early days.ย My thinking is that Graham had not been turned on to ABB when Woodstock planning was happening and it was a near miss.ย Understandable since there was only a five month lapse between ABB's inception and the Woodstock Festival.ย It's a pity though; if it HAD happened, think of the video footage we would have!

Richie Havens
Grateful Dead
Crosby, Stills & Nash
Jefferson Airplane
Mountain
Canned Heat
Arlo Guthrie

Great Subject for discussion. I was a young child of 10 in 1969. So my opportunity to experience live music and ROCK music was limited for sure.
ย Of the bands mentioned, I've had the pleasure of seeing:
The Dead
Santana
Crosby, Stills and Nash
While not a long list, seeing those performers was still a great experience and not soon forgotten...

Santanaย
Greatful Dead
Slyย
Crosby, Stills, Nash
Young solo
10 Years After
Jimi Hendrix (before Woodstock. He opened for The Monkees in 1968 at the Coliseum in my town. Mostly people under 17 and they for the most part didn't care for Hendrix. I on the other hand thought it was an opening act from Neptune. I had never seen a band and guitarist play like that.)

Santanaย - several times in several incarnations(?).ย Most memorable time was at one of Atlanta's Champagne Jam (ARS) festivals.ย Saw them at a City Stages festival (Birmingham, AL) - music was more of a Latin-pop (think Gloria Estefan or something) style - not sure if I stayed for the whole set.ย Again with Derek Trucks Band as the opener.ย Carlos ... kinda takes himself a bit too seriously - inviting all the children to come down to the stage to touch the hem of his guitar strap or some such shit.ย
Mountain - A couple of times.ย Leslie West.ย Nuff said.ย ย
Grateful Dead - Once or twice in the Jerry days.ย Long periods of time between songs - presumably mapping out the direction of their jams.ย I think I fell asleep once or twice.ย Then, the Dead, Grateful Dead and Company (?), the Other Ones (?) - all great, great shows!
The Who - Sadly, post Keith Moon.ย Eminence Front period - I thought it was a great show!
Ten Years After - Several times.ย Quite a few, if I remember anything from those days.ย One of my favorite bands of the day.ย I always enjoyed 'em!
The Band - Post Robbie Robertson period.ย While HE wrote those songs (and made the most money), I dare say that they were a powerful band without him.ย Great performance by his remaining bandmates.ย I thought Jim Weider was probably as good or better a guitarist than Robbie.
Johnny Winter - Several times back in the day - including once or twice with brother Edgar - and once - in a local (Birmingham) bar sitting in with some locals following a show.
Crosby, Stills & Nash ...ย - Once or twice.ย Great stuff.
Neil Young - Admittedly, I am not the biggest Neil fan in the room.ย I love his acoustic stuff - his songwriting.ย I loved Prairie Wind (many hard-core fans don't).ย I'm not a fan of his electric guitar noodling, twisting, distorting, jamming - whatever.ย I saw a Crazy Horse show with a couple of dear friends from this site (Tuscaloosa, AL) - who loved it.ย I liked the show - best part was being there with them.ย ๐ย
ย
Edit:
I never saw Jefferson Airplane or Starship, but I did see Hot Tuna several times.ย Partial credit?ย

I think Eminence Front is my favorite Who song so go figure. ๐ย
You mentioned Neil and Crazy Horse. When I saw that Greendale show I mentioned in NYC, after the theatrical thing was over with and they cleared the stage, Crazy Horse came out and they did another hour and a half or something. Talk about an odd segue.

@leeย To be clear, I have all of the respect in the world for Neil!ย I can think of no other artist who can - and can be accepted by their fanbase - for so much constant reinvention of themselves.ย I believe it all has its merits.ย In the late 70s to early 80s - he was like a freakin' box of chocolates!ย Bluegrass, Grunge, Folk ... the Shocking Pinks?ย You never knew what to expect!ย I think that makes him a true artist in the truest sense of the word!

Probably will miss something but:
Arlo Guthrie
The Who
Johnny Winter
Neil Young
Crosby, Stills & Nash
"Is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?"

Richie Havens
Arlo Guthrie
Santana
Sly & Family Stone
Joe Cocker

Johnny Winter
ย

The Dead, several times in 1970s, also 1990 Foxborough & 1994 Highgate
The Band, Watkins Glen, also spring 1987
the Who, Dec 1982 (1st farewell tour๐ฎ
Santana, Johnny Winter, CSN,ย
Ten Years After, original band, Great Show at Hampton Beach early 90s sometime
was roped into going to a Blood Sweat & Tears/Beach Boys show at Foxborough back in the day - was all about ABB/Dead/Hendrix at the time

Yep. I can see why people may or not like a particular tour from Neil. Ya just don't know what you will get. I saw him once and he started off with Hey Hey My My and closed it with My My Hey Hey. ย I thought that that was pretty cool.ย

Rick Derringer has always been one of my favorite guitar players.ย He actually played slide before Duane did.ย He appears on some great Steely Dan songs.ย A few years ago, a friend sent me a DVD of Rick playing a show.ย "Still Alive and Well" had been reworked : "every now and then I know it's kinda hard to tell but Jesus Chris is alive and well".ย That's okay, as far as I'm concerned.ย Then I read where he's become an ardent Trump supporter and right-wing fanatic.ย He got busted for traveling with a pistol on an airplane and basically defaulted on some loans that he likely had the means to repay.ย Another case of a musician from the hippie days going off the conservative cliff!ย Great player, though!ย

Joe Cocker
Arlo Guthrie
Santana

Damn, I am a HUGE Stave Earle fan (his music, not his political ramblings) and I don't recall that for the life of me. I would haveย lovedย to see that. Guess they didn't hit Chicago. I'll have to try to find a copy of one of those shows.

Sure, you get credit. ๐ I forgot about Hot Tuna. I guess I could add them too. It was the acoustic version, just the two of them. They opened for the ABB in 2000. The show was in Toledo, OH in a place that can best be described as a glorified high school gymnasium. They were pretty good. A pretty mellow start to an ABB show. It was probably the weirdest ABB show I ever saw. They ran out of beer so someone had to go to a local liquor store and bring back cases of canned beer to sell. I think that's illegal btw. ๐ย
Everything in Moderation. Including Moderation.

@rusty:ย That's funny.ย Thanks for the Derringer update.ย I don't think it's appropriate to be making religious proclamations from the stage and I question anyone's state of mind who does so.ย If I were at some kind of Revival and not a concert, that would be different.
I have personal experience with this.ย A very close friend of mine in late teens/early 20's was the type to go around preaching Jesus to anyone.ย I could see how off-kilter it was and it drove us apart.ย He got more and more radical.ย Now he is a registered sex offender.ย He didn't rape anyone, but he was a good musician and taught guitar and piano in his home.ย He came on to one of his 17 year old female students.ย There wasn't any actual sex, but he had his hand on her leg and was talking to her about sex.ย That was enough, she called her Mom to pick her up.ย He admitted everything to the police and he did a short stint in jail.ย And FYI, he was married with a teenage son, still is married.ย And that basically put an end to his teaching career, at least with underage students.ย He was still allowed to teach but if they were under 18 an adult had to be present.ย What parent would allow their child to be his student under those circumstances?ย Hey, how come my child can't come to your home without a chaperone?

This is totally off-topic, but in the early 80s, I had a married female friend who was an accomplished pianist, conservatory graduate who taught piano at a private studio in Baltimore that had about 10 teachers. Some of her kids - one boy as young as 9 always made her feel uncomfortable & one day, while she was demonstrating on the keyboard, he slid his hand under her skirt, up her thigh, & said something inappropriate. She reported the incident to the head of the studio & quit. One of her male colleagues had an affair w/a different 17 yr old high school girl almost every year. She was really bothered by it all - being in a small sound-proofed room w/just a piano & a child was a perfect place for troubled kids & predator teachers to accuse each other of things that never happened or inappropriate things happened. She quit teaching & did something 9-5. It really is a weird situation unless there are surveillance cameras in every studio.ย

@robslobย "Registered Sex Offender" - that's an interesting sounding term.ย Sounds like you've gone down to the court house, filled out the forms and been issued a license!ย That way, if you speak in inappropriate sexual innuendo and someone calls you out for it, you just reach into your wallet and produce your permit card.ย "It's okay!ย I'm a Registered Sex Offender!"ย ๐ย
ย
ย
... okay, NOT funny.

@cyclone88:ย That is amazing to me that this could go on that frequently.ย Yeah, I think surveillance cameras would be the answer.ย Even more astonishing to me that a 9 year old boy would be that forward sexually.ย Very likely there had been some abuse in his past.

The girls aren't surprising - cool single musician guy all theirs for 1/2 hr - but he should've known better even though lines were blurry for musicians at the time. Probably abuse in the 9 yr old's past but it really wasn't her problem if she even recognized it back then. She also refused students referred for "music therapy" which is an entirely different field from classical piano. Early 80s was about the time when there started to be awareness/legal cases of sexual misconduct for lack of a better word from coaches & teachers who had private contact w/students of all genders. Good teachers had to take extra precautions to avoid being alone w/students because of a few bad ones & protect themselves from unfounded claims of misconduct from troubled kids. Jesus wasn't mentioned, though.

@lee:ย I couldn't find a youtube of them performing together (will look more) but here's the next best thing.

I've seen:
The Who - Several times
The Grateful Dead- Several times
CSNY - Twice (also Neil Young many times solo, with Crazy Horse, and with Buffalo Springfield)
Mountainย
Ten Years After
CCR - I haven't seen Creedence Clearwater Revival, but I've seen John Fogarty solo and Creedence Clearwater Revisited.
Santana - Twice
Joan Baez
Arlo Guthrieย
Blood, Sweat, and Tears
Country Joe McDonald - I also saw Barry "The Fish" Melton in The Dinosaurs.ย
Jefferson Airplane

Country Joe McDonald
I also chatted often with Bill Graham, Hugh Romney (wavy gravy) and had dinner with Abbie Hoffman, all of whom were present, as well.ย My dad actually was at woodstock, but he went with some off duty police officer friends of his who were sent to hang out in case there was any trouble.ย They just partied.ย ย
