I love this song, maybe my favorite Crowes song, but Adam MacDougals' keys on this song always throw it off. I never liked how he plays on this. His treatment doesn't fit the song, never has.

Love some Audley Freed though.

Will be seeing this band tomorrow.

Thanks for the post. Its great to see/hear Audley again, but Richs group Magpie Salute does the same tune and kills it. This version is lame in comparison.

Obviously music is not a competition and is subjective and everyone likes what they like. That disclaimer aside, I have thoughts!

I don't mind Adam MacDougall's playing - I don't like when he employs some of his really synthy tones - but I like the funk and jazz elements he brought to the Crowes. Obsessive comparing and contrasting of various lineups of my favorite bands is a hobby of mine - and the Crowes offer lots of different lineups to do that with (as do the ABB) - and my favorite era is the Luther era which MacDougall was a part of - so I have a softer spot for MacDougall than some. I will say most of the old school Crowes fans hate MacDougall's playing - especially those who like more the straight ahead rock side of the band - so you are far from alone in that opinion WarEagle that's for sure. I tend to like Eddie Harsch's treatment better as you do, but MacDougall doesn't ruin it for me.

This version is really good, but it's not quite as good as the one from the webcast of the tour opener - Marcus' solo here is not as good as the other night to my ears, but the duel with Audley at the end of the jam is probably a little better than that one.

I like the Magpie Salute a lot too - and would rate the Ford eras as my 2nd favorite Crowes lineup. I like the Audley/Hess era too, but they rarely let Audley loose as much as they could have during his Crowes tenure. But as much as I like Marc Ford's playing, I prefer this King/Hess/Audley front line for the Wiser Time solos and jam over Magpie's Ford/R. Robinson/Pipien - so I'm with As the Crow Flies on this one. I'm also aware there's many a Crowes fan would consider that opinion blasphemy!

I'm listening to one of the Port Chester shows now and I have to say it just doesn't sound right without Rich.

Agree. We all have our preferences. I lean more towards Rich than Chris, but if As The Crowe Flies comes my way, I will go. I am glad to see Audley back out there. Really enjoy his playing.
