You missed the funnest band ever- The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band when Jimmy Ibbotson was still a member. He and Jeff Hanna were a comedy team and John McEuen was a stand up comedian.

You also missed how Zappa, Captain Beefheart, WSP (Widespread panic), gov't mule, and Phish are all funny.

I'm not sure why you consider Hendrix to be "scary never funny" and Derek Trucks to be "not funny"?

Watch The Who documentary "The Kids Are Alright"; Keith Moon and Pete Townsend are very funny. The Who did "Squeeze Box" and "I'm a Boy" and "Tattoo" and "My Wife." They named an album "Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy." They are funny.

Watch a Derek Trucks interview or listen to his Marc Marin interview. He may have looked stoic onstage, but he has a good dry wit and a ready laugh.

Funny: Paul Westerberg, Ray Davies, Ian Gillian, Levon Helm, David Lee Roth, Johnny Rotten.

Depends on what you mean by "funny". I'm not talking about comedy, or the band having a sense of humor, more like bands that cause folks to joke about them for whatever reason. It seems to have to do with character.

Like it is an old deadhead tradition to pick on Bob Weir, for some strange reason. But you can't touch Derek Trucks, he is too cool. That's my angle.

Zappa is a tough one. He was humorous and joked, and his material was funny as hell, but it was hard to laugh at him personally.

Sheridan gets it, those guys are all funny even though they are trying to be serious.

I thought about the Who, and while they may seem funny, it is in a Clockwork Orange kind of way, and is actually more frightening than anything. Like when Keith busts out of that box in the Kids Are Alright, it is too true to be funny. Guy was a maniac.

Scary Hendrix, just couldn't think of a better word, definitely not funny, like he was on a whole other plane that you couldn't really understand and it just left you in awe. Love Hendrix, but there is this weird sort of vertigo or something, that I get from his stuff, can't listen to it very often.

caveat: thread not to be taken seriously, thx. Not that it was being taken seriously, but it will get pretty awkward if say I have to go into an elaborate detailed explanation of Trower's facial expressions, for example.

As a huge Trower fan, when I read the initial post and saw him listed as "funny," the only thing I could think of that would put him in that category is his facial expressions, so I'm glad you clarified that Rabbit. My wife always said it looked like he was sucking on lemons when he was soloing. I always get too caught up in his playing to pay attention to his odd faces.

Might have to put Jethro Tull in the "funny" category just based on their photo on the album cover of "This Was"...

Plus I've seen quite a few other funny photos of them with bizarre facial expressions and equally bizarre attire.
I think Ian possessed a very Monty Python-like sense of humor, so to me, Tull = Funny!

not sure if he was "funny" but Warren Zevon was a genius, a genuinely good guy, witty, his lyrics painted quite a picture, often whimsical and "out there". Loved the dude.

Rush - Funny. But serious.

The times I've seen Tull live I thought they were funny. But a dark kind of funny.

Joe Cocker - Not funny but so effin awesome he made you smile.

I don't know about the ABB escaping. Gregg was the poster boy for messed up 70s rock star.

Bob Dylan, very funny, mocked for his voice and looks and quite the jokester......Peace.....joe

Dylan is a good choice, pretty damn funny at times. Neil Young too. Fallon absolutely nailed him on SNL.

As for the ABB or GA specifically, the Amy Pohler "I'm No Angel" perfume skit from SNL comes to mind. That was funny.
Although some in this forum might have issue with it.. Still, it was funny!!

BTW, in that above photo of Steve Howe, he kind of has a Nigel Tuffnel thing going on with the expression and the hair.

Don't forget Steve Marriot. He could tell some great stories during the show. Also Southside Johnny . But one of the best was the Faces.

The real question is:

Great call on Dylan! People spend so much time trying to figure out how "deep" he is and miss the humor all together!

I get what you are saying about Jimi being so intense, but he was one of the funniest cats that ever lived. He was the epitome of somebody who took music very seriously, but not himself. He could indeed be scary, but he also had a lighthearted side.

Some of my favorite funny stage banter is from Hendrix....
