50 yrs (!) ago this weekend is where it all began for me with this band. About this time that Fri my pal Bob and I were rolling into Love Valley from Durham. Hadn't turned 17 yet and between high school and college coming up in the fall. Bob had bought the Woodstock album that summer and we listened to it often on his mom's console stereo. Somehow we heard of this festival that was to rival that epic weekend coming up near Statesville, NC so off we went. I've truly never been the same since. First time experience for a number of things. We had no knowledge of the bands that would play and not sure we really cared.
So late on that Fri night we got our first exposure to ABB. We hung out on the hill behind the stage w/ some cat selling grilled cheese sandwiches and hash (not corned beef style) On Sat night we got ABB again along w/ the other groups. ABB wouldn't really sink in 'til they played at college that fall and it started to make sense. Idlewild South made it into my cassette collection along there somewhere as well. On Sun we dragged our tired, sunburned & morphed asses home.
On another forum when discussing current events, I was accused of wanting to return to the "good old days" in America. I do know one thing. I would love for this community to return to the spirit and love that was once expressed on this fan club. I'm getting on in years as many here are, but what we had then and for so long was amazing and will never be forgotten by me. I only wish some of the late to the party folks on here could understand the kinship we had with the greatest band in the land.
Peace.

I was there so they tell me:) Came from Winston-Salem straight down I40.

No I wasn't that high. I remember it. Duane Allman playing slide on a Goldtop Les Paul. Duane was the best I've seen at that. Guy I was with lost a shoe there and I ruined mine.

Yes what is wrong with wanting to return to the good old days? I didn't know any racists then and our parties were integrated. Perhaps the older people were racists and business was and the police and I'm sure it was at certain places. All this white supremacy and systemic racism is suppose to be so widespread in America but I don't know anyone involved with racists practice and white supremacy.

50 years ago and no racists that I encountered at Love Valley and people into the Allman Brothers Band and other similar band never even thought about that as far as I could see. You notice people like that there icepick?

I remember the ABB playing Mountain Jam and the drummers playing for a long time but I guess I didn't know the name of it. I cant clearly remember if I noticed Donovan's First There Is A Mountain them at the beginning.

One of my friends had the first album and Turner me on to the ABB and it was good but I didn't get zapped until I saw them live and Duane's slide on Statesboro Blues was my first toke of that band and was immediately addicted.

Jaimoe really knocking it down with that traditional grip on his long solo on Mountain Jam. Getting close to Buddy Rich type drumming.

I noticed on Whipping Post, Dickey cut his solo short and left the stage before Post was finished. Doesnt seem to be on the beginning of Mountain Jam. Must of had some personal issues.
