where is the excitement?

It seems that Gregg Allman has scheduled a very extensive tour. Unless I am missing something, there has not been much excitement here, just wondering what is up? Am I missing something? Looking forward to the trip to Kalamazoo tonight.....Peace to All....joe

He's playing just down the road on this tour and I'm going to pass again. He sounds great and his band brings it, but man, he needs to reinvent himself, it's the same old songs, played for the thousandth time it seems. Now away from the Allman covers band, he is officially a member of the oldies tour circuit, content to perform, "Midnight Rider", "I'm no angel" and "Melissa" in front of crowds that are seemingly there just to sing along with tunes they are familiar with from their constant airplay on classic rock stations. Good for him, it's a living and he says he enjoys it; people smile and flock to his shows by the hundreds, the crowd sizes enhanced by the addition of an ultimate sing along band from the 70s, The Doobie Brothers. No longer part of a group that was once worshiped for its musicianship and ability to improvise, the songs are mostly 5 minutes or so and seem to hold the crowd's attention. ""Excitement"?..Not here, not any longer. But I wish all who attend a good time and Gregg a road that goes on forever, he has earned it.

you are so right BIGV, I will always enjoy Greggs singing but the set list are so redundant with him..I know he has been writing songs with Scott Sharrard...Road Test them Gregg!!!

I have never gotten excited for a Gregg Allman solo show. It's just not the same as the Allman Brothers Band. Sorry.
I realize others feel differently, but I have always felt there was a world of difference between an ABB show and a Gregg show.

Hey RobJohnson... check your PM's

Great band and sound, needs to shake up the setlist though

Gregg seems to be opening up his setlist. Some good stuff in last night's show:
I'm No Angel
Statesboro
Don't Keep Me Wonderin
Queen of Hearts
The Same Thing
Trouble No More
Hot Lanta
These Days
Can't be Satisfied
Done Somebody Wrong
Soulshine
Cradle
You Don't Love Me
Melissa
Midnight Rider
Love Like Kerosene
Whipping Post
Encore: Southbound
That's a pretty solid setlist with alot of ABB material and alot of new additions. Gregg is not going to be around forever and he is not going to be able to sing as well as he currently can forever either. As a fan of his talent and the song book I would go see him while you still can.
Rob Johnson: you are right a Gregg show is not the same as an ABB show. It is not suppose to be. When you go to see Gregg don't expect it to be the same experience, once you do that you can enjoy it for what it is.
Ryan

Well, I wanted to post a little sooner after the show, but I am a little slow. I gotta say that all things added up, I don't see how the current situation could be any better for Gregg, I could go on and on with what I consider positives, first Gregg sounds great and to me looked healthy, like RyanBelair stated, the setlist is quite varied from the 5 or 6 previous GAF shows i have seen. I am concerned about the large size of this tour. The shows allow Gregg plenty of room to push himself if he feels like it, but he doesn't have too. The performance seemed inspired all around, infact, the performance I saw last night seemed much more fiery and inspired than the ABB show I caught on the final run at the Chicago Theatre. Scott has a real nice tone on guitar. I could go on and on. How lucky I figure I am to still be able to go enjoy 2 of my top 5 musical artists of all time, Bob Dylan and Gregg Allman, still performing at a high level!!! And yes I realize that I am a simpleton........Peace.....joe

We'll be at CMAC in August, smiling and happy to see & hear Gregg.

Seen his solo band plenty, but doubtful I will be in the future.

I am so excited I am taking a trip to San Antonio to see him May 5. Hope to catch Deadman in Austin around the same time.
We saw him in Ft. Myers in January and it was a great show! They played a new song written by Scott, Love Like Kerosene! I really loved it. But I always try to see Gregg at least twice a year. I don't get tired of his songs.
Gregg's new band is really exciting too. He finally has the horns he wanted and Marc Q. on drums. It is now a 9-piece band with a great New Orleans vibe. I like it much better than the old band, except I miss Bruce Katz!

Looking at the setlist Ryan posted, I see a majority of ABB material. I have no problem with that. We're going to the second Chicago show Friday night.
And believe it or not, I don't mind if he plays Soulshine. I like him singing it better. 😉
I will post a review Saturday.

Hey Ryan, as you probably know, I've seen Gregg solo many, many times. I just saw him last year at Music Midtown here in Atlanta.
I'm just not a Gregg Allman fan. I am an Allman Brothers Band fan, but mostly for reasons that have little to do with Gregg.
That said, I am glad he is playing and singing well and I am happy people are enjoying his current tour.

Let's face it, how much longer will he tour? I would hate to miss a chance to see him and then hear he won't tour anymore.

Well, there's a bunch of people who like them songs and still want to hear 'em. That bunch goes out to shows and gets recognized as "y'all a great bunch". I don't care how many times a hear a song, it is always different, and always soothes the soul. So I am sorry for the naysayers but the great bunch likes what he is doing.

Ill be there.
i will take wott I can get at this point.
With no ABB, Im all about GAB and Mule now

With one original member of the ABB in the band, I'll pass. Also scarred from the I'm no Angel Era, my buddy would play that crap over and over again.

Don't forget TTB ! 😉

ABBsolutely!

Saw last night's show in Chicago. Pretty much the same setlist he always plays. Opened with Statesboro, I'm No Angel, then ABB stuff for the most part.
I figured that is what we would get.
He did add an additional keyboard player who was awesome when he soloed and a horn section which added a different flavor to ABB songs.
I guess I would say other than the wrinkles put it, you've seen the show before. Not bad but if he comes back to town I will save my disposable income for other shows.

Hi Lee, if You get a minute would You share a word about the audience and Their reaction? I guess I am more excited about the show I saw and Gregg's tour than most Folks, partly cause I don't get out and see shows like I once did. The crowd in Kalamazoo was real receptive and responsive.......Thanks.....joe

My sentiments exactly.

At the beginning of his current tour in January, we saw him in Ft. Myers, FL, a sold-out show. The audience loved him and he got standing ovations! The crowd was very enthusiastic and still talking about how great the show was as we were walking out. I love Gregg's shows and have seen him many times in the past 8 years. The current band is the best yet. I love the New Orleans vibe! Lee, I prefer hearing him sing Soulshine too. I will see him as much as possible while I still can! Hope this helps.

Joe -
The show was fine. Crowd was mostly 40s and 50s ish folks. No hippies. My wife actually commented about that.
Crowd liked the standards. That was what he was playing to IMO. I was telling some buddies yesterday about the show and one asked me what it cost. $30?
No, $60. Wasn't worth sixty bucks.
You need to get to Chicago soon!

I see I am not the first to mention this.

Good on Greg for getting out there & touring so much despite the ending of ABB. A few said at his age he was over the hill & couldn't sing anymore during the Beacon run. I think the setlist shown above looks pretty good too. His band will never be the Allman Brothers nor will TTB or Mule be,but I think you gotta hand it to Greg to not having just gone quietly off in the sunset retiring despite 2 members leaving ABB. He's still playing 'a lot'.
I don't think there will ever be another Allman Brothers Band & if they do reform again in the future 'may never' have the same magic just because of the name.

Two points here....One touches on my other post about Gregg being content to be a "Oldies act"....playing "The standards"...exactly. I'm no Angel, Midnight rider, Melissa and others that are 40+ years old, it is what it is. The lack of interest in new material has spilled over into his solo shows. The quality of the few "New" songs just is not up to what I've come to appreciate as Gregg's finest work, "Floating bridge"?...Heard it once or twice, that's enough. As one who would drive hundreds of miles back in the day to see the ABB, the GAB and Dickey during their heyday and solo careers, I've stockpiled a lifetime of memories as far as these "opened up" set-lists go. I'm in total agreement, just not worth $60. "Excitement"?...back in the 70's, 80's and 90' for sure.

Now didn't Gregg play a couple of new songs in january??
