It seems as though the ABB will reunite at some point in some fashion. Unless i've missed it, derek is the only one who has come out and said he won't be a part of it. Why is he so adamant about not playing with them again?

I don't agree. There is no factual evidence to indicate that they will reunite.

I don't think there is anything wrong with Derek. He's been doing his own thing for years. Back when Johnny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd were being Stevie Ray clones for example, Derek was the same age and doing his own thing. Where are Johnny and Kenny now? Still sounding like Stevie Ray Vaughan...

The TTB album covers are also big statements to his conviction to do his own thing. Made Up Mind with the buffalo smashing into the train head on speaks volumes. And now, Let Me get By is an Eagle flying away from the constraints of its captor now that he's free of the Allmans.

He tried to leave the Allmans for 5 years but family loyalty kept pulling him back in. It just sucks for fans who want to see all of the family of bands at a place like Wanee and Derek seems to consciously avoid it.

What's wrong with Derek? Have you seen TTB? They are fresh, exciting, invigorating... they change stuff up every night. Derek leads that band with professionalism and grace.

I loved the ABB but things change. Derek's new project is an evolution. I loved the final Beacon shows attended but I'm happy to move forward.

That quote pretty much says all that you need to know on this subject. Derek is a very progressive artist. I see a direct parallel to Robert Plant refusing a Zep reunion: "Let's leave the past in the past" in so many words (that's not a quote, but my summary of Plant's attitude).

As Joe The Lurker said, Derek likely hung on with ABB for much longer than he wanted to. My favorite band of all-time, but I even I have grown VERY tired of hearing Statesboro Blues and One Way Out. Think of having to play them every night!

If ABB does reunite, maybe for Wanee or The Beacon, there are plenty of able guitar players who may be willing to fill in. There is only one Derek. But there is Jack Pearson, Scott Sherrard, Mike McGee, Leroy Parnell...........the list goes on and on. And of course this is ASSUMING that Warren would even be on board with it.

How much of your decision to go involved work load, like the time and energy that went into the Beacon residencies each year? And how much of it was about the room left to grow in the band?

Honestly, for me, it was a lot more than that, especially since the band wasn't in the mode of writing tunes or interested in making records. I love that [classic] material as much as anyone on earth. But I knew you can only do it so many times and feel like you're making a statement. That's one of the reasons I put my Derek Trucks Band aside [in 2010]. It wasn't out of gas yet, but I could feel it coming. I could feel my interest waning.

Warren said that he felt there was half of a new Allmans studio album in the works, in terms of material he had and songs already in live rotation. The problem was getting it past the concept, to something concrete.

A few of the guys just weren't into making records with the Allman Brothers. My uncle would always say, "This is a live band." He hated being in the studio. And I get that. But the Allman Brothers made some great studio records. To me, the one big missed opportunity with that [last] incarnation was not making another record. Hittin' the Note [released in 2003] was good, but there was a better record in there. Having a studio in my backyard where we could have easily recorded the band — between me and Warren, we would have crushed an Allman Brothers record. It only takes time. Get people down here, writing, focused. You have to be mentally into it. And it never came to pass.

^^^

yep
Not too long ago, Derek said in an interview something like "a living, breathing band writes new material"

also, it seems as if it is in his nature to keep on progressing, "sometimes you have to push the reset button" was a repeated quote of his at the end of the DTB run

>>What is wrong with Derek?

If anything doesn't make sense, it would be Derek doing more of the same old same old.

Will make a great April fools joke tho. "Derek reunites with ABB, says touring with
family, recording at his home, breaking new musical ground just got very boring. I can't wait
to play the same stuff over and over every night he says"

I don't agree. There is no factual evidence to indicate that they will reunite.

I know warren, Butch, and Gregg have all commented on possibly playing together again. How is that not factual evidence?

I'm not saying they're gonna start touring again but fro one night at least all of the guys say it's possible-perhaps probable except for derek who said he bought a one way ticket out.

It just seems odd to me that a guy like derek who jams with so many people won't play with these guys again as a group.

I'm aware of TTB and I know artist grow. I was just curious if there was more of a story behind the band. Honestly I don't like TTB's newer stuff as much. Just a personal thing.

While I'm at it TTB added a new singer and have 2 new horn players. Are the horn changes a permanent thing or are the other guys taking a break/working on their own projects?

"What's wrong with Derek" is that he is an artist who just doesn't see anything creative about painting the same picture for the 4000th time. I not only accept that, I applaud it. There comes a time in EVERYBODY's career when it's just time to go on to something else.

Imagine if there had been an internet years ago when Clapton left the Yardbirds, then Cream, then Blind Faith, the Delaney & Bonnie, then Derek & The Dominos then disappeared for a couple of years? Imagine all the talk about his constant moves.

I think Derek has a bit of young Clapton's wandering soul just not to that extreme.

I think Derek just wants to distance himself from the ABB stuff right now in part to not burn out on it and probably in part to let there be a little bit of value in that being their final shows. We are barely a year out of the last shows, he's still sitting in with members of the band from time to time but apparently doesn't want to feel the pressure of saying no if they are all on the same festival at once.

I agree with all responses posted. I also miss the ABB so much so I understand why we seek reasons for things that hurt us even if no one is really at fault. Nobody beats Father Time. The ABB just weren't doing enough in the last 5(?) or so years. I loved Hittin' the Note and I agree it was such a wasted opportunity to not record a follow up.

I have been blown away by TTB the two times I have seen them. I am hopeful that I can get to the Chicago theater shows next month and I can't wait to hear the new album.

I have a friend who keeps talking about a Wanee reunion. Personally I'm not interested in a one off reunion. You get the same players up there to "jam" with little or no rehearsal, and I think you disrespect the musicianship.

As far as TTB, I'm very happy Alecia Chakour was added to the band. Elizabeth Lea on trombone is a great talent with a long list of credits. She adds a lot of energy to the performance. Don't know why the other horn players moved on, I wish them the best, but didn't miss them the last three times I saw TTB.

While I agree Derek is the one who would be unlikely to be a part of an ABB reunion, I don't think he has come out and said that as the original post stated.

Derek did play with Gregg, Marc & Jaimoe at Gathering of the Vibes fest. Jack Pearson is playing with Warren & Chuck at the Mule NYE show. Jack also played with Butch, Oteil & Marc and the Les Bres outfit is playing Wanee. Warren has played with Gregg & Marc & Jaimoe. Warren played with Derek in the TTB set last weekend. I think some reunion shows like the two in 1986 are inevitable (probably with Jack & Warren on guitar; Chuck is more likely to participate than Derek if his Stones schedule allows), but I don't see a restart to the band ever happening. They have moved on and don't appear to be hurting financially.

"I felt good about the way I ended it. My time is certainly up with them - I bought a one-way ticket out and that’s where I am now. "

Can you see yourself crossing paths with Warren at a future date for some sort of project?

I don’t know if that thing will ever happen. I’m pretty sure that won’t with the Allmans.

I was actually just talking about you two.

Oh yeah, no, I definitely see doing something with Warren. I mean, we’re in touch quite a bit on the road. I just check up on him and see how things are. Yeah, I mean, Warren’s great. I know we’ll work together again in some shape or form. He’s always wandering and searching musically and I think that’s my m.o. too, so I’m sure those lines will cross again.

So the person who started with the subject of "what's wrong with Derek" gets a ton of thought out responses with almost zero backlash then responds with "it's like you're just looking for a fight" when all of the responses have been fairly even-keeled.

Interesting.

Was anyone "upset" with that honest question?

He is trying to live in the present with his family, his friends and his music.

Kudos.

Exactly. Absolutely not upset by the question.

And no idle responses to interview questions like Warren saying he does not rule anything out is clearly not factual evidence to indicate a reunion is coming.

I don't know how anyone seeing Gregg in the last year cannot see how much happier he is now that one journey has been completed and he is able to carry on doing his thing inn whatever way he sees fit.

Nope. You can't step in the same river twice.

If that is your bag, there are tons of live DTB shows available. And then sometime in the future, perhaps we'll get a 'Derek's picks' series from the vault.

He was never gonna play clubs forever. Saw Susan in a small blues club in Colorado oh so long ago. Not many there, she was a real pro even then and blew the roof off the place. Fantastic, inimate show.

They've paid their dues. Let them enjoy the nicer backstage digs and better hotel rooms. They've done enough nasty, been ripped off, ridden around the country in the back of crappy vans with barely gas money, lonely nights, fleabag motels.

That they are so down to earth is a testament to 'keeping it classy' the lost art of the 21st century.

What does it matter anyway, what with the trend of the whole 53 people on stage thing (they're bound to get close to a reunion, right? 50 or 51 of the original members on stage, close enough for a reunion).

Cool

For what it's worth, i can easily live with the kind of theaters the TTB plays. While not tiny clubs, you still get great sound and a great view, unlike in the arenas you have to hit to see some other greats.

I'm with you. Don't want it much bigger and wish them sustained success at this level.

What's wrong with him? Nothing. Is it a coincidence that he stays away from things involving the ABB? No.

I hope he continues to move forward and not look back. He had a great run with the ABB. That chapter is over. Besides, he's kind of young for a nostalgia tour. He has so much more to offer.

Remember that job you had (we all had) earlier in life where the people were awesome and it was fun, but time goes by and you maybe drop in or drive by the place and it's not the same anymore...and while your memories are great, you couldn't possibly picture yourself back at that job again?

That. With a cranky uncle added to the mix. Grin

I'll break the thread mold. What's wrong with Derek? I'd say nothing I guess. "Made Up Mind" as a studio album is a complete throwaway in my collection, haven't listened to it in half a year. The TTB is a seasoned group of musicians playing "safe" versions of songs waiting for the next Derek solo. I've seen them live, it's an interesting show ready for the DPAC in Durham, NC, where they have Broadway touring shows and the like. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but I think Derek is a humongous talent, like many here do, and his gift isn't being wholly realized by the music the TTB is playing.

I don't think Derek should disband the TTB, but if he has some free time, it would be amazingly interesting to see him get down live with some musicians who aren't dominated in their performance by the need to return to the verse/chorus that the TTB constrains him to. That's what the ABB was, and he doesn't have that outlet now. No Warren to challenge him. No legacy to stare down and overcome. I sincerely hope one of the singular musical talents of this generation doesn't get lost into his mid-40s wading through Joe Cocker and Sly Stone covers for an opportunity to unleash his musical geniius.

Although you have not posted much, I see from your registration date that you have been around here for a while. If you have been lurking regularly, you have seen lots of threads where the comments were not as gracefully and kindly stated as yours.

There are lots of others, myself included, who feel the same way. But although this was more of a thread about Derek, most of the threads related more specifically to the TTB tend to degenerate into name calling from both sides. It's nice to see that has stopped.

The most common side project that I have heard mentioned is with Jimmy Herring. For me that would be a lot more fun than what he does now. It's clear that Derek is totally invested in TTB as his musical "vehicle", and he is choosing to commit all his energy to its success. Commercially he is achieving that. Many here believe the TTB to be the best touring band around, so by their standard, it's musically successful as well.

It's also very good for his family, and other big consideration.

I do not expect Derek to change his focus. Derek is a man of his convictions. For once, he does not have the distraction of playing in multiple bands with conflicting touring schedules. That's another plus for his lifestyle.
