What Re-Masters Really Do Sound Markedly Better?

This question comes from the "Laid Back Re-Issue" thread.

When CDs first came out, technology had only gotten so far, so some of the early CDs that reproduced analog / vinyl albums from the 1960s or 1970s were not mastered well for the new digital medium.

Obviously, remasters have been coming out for the past few decades. Very understandably, some of this raises eyebrows; buying the same product twice does not feel good when it is not very necessary.

What ARE some of the remasters that sound markedly better?

I have not listened to them in a while, but when Zepp remastered their catalogue in those 2 boxed sets around 1990, I thought it was great at the time.

I like Layla.40th Anniversary album. I heard all kinds of stuff in that one that I didn’t in the original.

I haven't repurchased many albums or remasters, but the Idlewild South Deluxe edition was so much better than the 1996 Capricorn re-release (which was somehow worse than the early 1990s Polydor disc).

I also recall that early CDs were created from the "most recent" copies available for artists in general. The thinking was that these had less loss due to age. However, many of these were copies of copies and had generational loss associated with them. Hence, later releases sounded better even without any remastering done to them ....

The sound on the early Grand Funk records was absolutely HORRIBLE. Actually the second record wasn't bad , "Grand Funk" or "the red album". But Terry Knight COMPLETELY botched their third one, Closer To Home, which to me is easily their best album. But the sound was horribly muddy. The remaster which came out quite a few years back was a big improvement.

Things got better for Grand Funk later on when either Todd Rundgren or Frank Zappa were producing their records. Knight was also their Manager, otherwise I don't think anyone would have allowed him anywhere near a sound board.

The recent Keith Richards "Talk Is Cheap", like night and day from the old CD. All the MFSL Allman Brothers. The recent Acoustic Sounds Jimi Hendrix Axis - PHENOMENAL:

Remasters can suck too, some of the Experience Hendrix remasters are awful, they butchered Ladyland, the old cds are far superior.

Smile remastered reissues won’t sound worse than the original records I suppose, but the 180g Experience Hendrix vinyl reissues of AYE & Axis sound Good on my music box - a 3 min electric Red House is included in the AYE release that he just burns down w/his lead - will check that Acoustic Sounds link :)

Have the MCA issue Elec Ladyland CD,1 CD, sounds fine to me
In an attempt to fit all of Electric Ladyland onto 1 CD, they chopped off the last 36 seconds of VC Slight Return when CDs first became popular & hit the market late 80s-early 90s - how could that have ever been allowed

A lot of vinyl releases are issued from CD masters, so they will not sound any better than CD's.

I think I remember reading that one or more of the Doors remasters was done at a higher speed, since someone determined the original release was too slow.

. . .will check that Acoustic Sounds link

They are working on a remaster of "Are You Experienced" - supposed to come out any day now for months, the Axis link will get you there too.

I gotta backpedal, made the mistake of using words like "better" or "awful" in a sound discussion. What I mean is "better in a way I like".

Rush - Vapor Trails Remixed

David Bottrill deserved a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for striking such a critical blow to digital distortion and loudness. 😛

When you can reveal entire parts (acoustic guitars in particular) that were blanketed by distortion on the original release, you've done a helluva job.

For sure - it is a cause for rejoicing when sounds that were buried come clawing up out of the grave to walk the earth once again.

I have several of the Jethro Tull albums remixed by Steven Wilson and they all sound excellent , Wilson has been remixing a lot of great albums which is a good thing IMO .

The songs on the Dreams box set sound incredible and the remix of Wipe the Windows really cleaned up the muddy sound and brought out the drums.
