Thanks for posting Slyckyr. I’ve been hip to the “swamp chat” for awhile. I do wonder from time to time how much is truth and how much is exaggeration. 😉

Pops Duane definitely knew Skynyrd. The story that Skynyrd was playing the ABB’s first album note for note at a club and Duane suggesting they do their own thing is widely known. I believe Ronnie’s wife was Gregg’s old girlfriend. Duane’ was evidently generous to all musicians at that time. Don Felder claims Duane showed him how to play slide. Before the ABB the Hourglass and the Allman Joys were in a sense the competition of Skynyrd/Pre Skynyrd, Mudcrutch, Dru Lombar and just about everybody who came from Jacksonville.

No not close friends by any stretch, but they definitely knew each other. And Skynyrd (like everyone) respected the Allman Brothers. And I believe the respect was mutual due to Gary being asked to play with the band in NYC for the Duane tribute. Anyway this cat Steve Vest is likeable enough. I know if I got to bump elbows with Skynyrd or the Allmans, hell I’d parlay that into 15 minutes of fame. I had the pleasure to meet a couple of the Skynyrd cats and they were as down-to-earth as Mr. Vest. Must be a Jacksonville thang.

Yea, this guy claims he and Thom Doucette played harp. I must be a novice since I've never heard of this person, didn't hear him say his name. Either way this guy doesn't seem credible.

First mention I've ever heard about Duane taping shows....I mean, can you imagine the performers he must have seen? And the tapes!

In "Please Be With Me" (Galadrielle Allman's book), Galadrielle said that Duane never saw Hendrix play in Atlanta (he was exhausted after the Brothers performed), and then later on she also said that Ace Doucette was going to introduce Duane to Hendrix right around the time Jimi passed away. A shame that such pure and revolutionary genius never got the chance to collaborate.

Here's a story from the left coast about a jam that never happened:
"I set it up for Quicksilver and the Dead to show up and jam with Hendrix.... I called Hendrix back and told him to meet us at the ferry boat in Sausalito at 2 am, and we would jam all night. We go out to this place [October 12], and the Dead are beat and dead tired because they had just played the Avalon, but after all, it's a jam with Hendrix. We sit there from 2 am until morning, and Hendrix never shows. Everybody in Quicksilver and the Dead were pissed.... The Dead played again at the Avalon that night [October 13] and Hendrix shows up there while the Dead were playing. [His shows were through and he had the night free.] Hendrix comes up to me and I told him that the Dead and Quicksilver and I were waiting for him all night in Sausalito, and I asked him what happened. Hendrix says, "Oh, I met this broad, and we dropped acid and we @#$%ed all night".... Hendrix said, "Can I jam with the Grateful Dead tonight on the stage?" and I said, "It's OK with me, but it's their gig - if they want that to happen, it's fine with me." I brought Hendrix into the dressing room and told the Dead that Jimi wanted to jam with them, and they're saying, "Great! We'll do it!" The Grateful Dead go back out onstage to do their last set of the night and start playing. And keep playing. I tell Hendrix and everybody that no matter what, I'm pulling the plug at midnight. [The Avalon had a strict curfew, so Dead shows there had to be kept short, which accounts for the rushed endings we hear at some of their shows there.] What happened was the Dead kept telling him to wait, and played out their set.... So Hendrix never jammed with the Grateful Dead, and the bottom line is they were pissed at him."

I had heard the story about Hendrix standing up the Dead for a jam session, but I'd never seen the October 12th date before.

That makes it even more of a shame it didn't happen, because that must refer to October 12th, 1968, when Hendrix was playing a series of shows at Winterland in San Francisco. That run stands tall as one of Jimi's finest moments, so it makes it extra painful the jam didn't happen. He was absolutely on fire during this time period and the resulting jam session could have been one for the ages.

Oh well, what could have been.......

Duane did tell the story of Jimi Hendrix writing Little Martha. Said he was In a motel room and Hendrix walked in and went to the sink, turned on the water and began playing the melody for Little Marha on the stream of water coming out with his fingers. Duane said he suddenly woke up and it was a dream but he picked up a guitar and started playing what he heard in the dream.
