This morning the temp' is below freezing down here on the island (colder n' polar bear $hit!). If it's this cold here, it must be awful damn cold further north. Some advice:
Make sure you know where your keys are before you lock door to house or car.
Make sure your cell phone is fully charged.
Keep a blanket (or 2 or 3), a fireplace starter log and some matches/lighter in the trunk of your car.
Make sure your cars antifreeze is up to date. Make sure car is in good repair.
If at all possible, stay indoors ... near a fireplace with some 'Brothers playing on the hi-fi!
I hear you, down here in Estero Florida the wind chill factor is crazy.

Last night was bad because of the wind. Pipes froze here, and they say snow some light snow tomorrow. Winter in NY is now mid-end of January thru March, so I hope it's not a cold one. It is supposed to go up into the 40's next week, so this is just from a storm, if we're gonna get blasted it happens in February.
Actual temperature this morning (not just wind chill, but the temp) here in Chicago was -8.
I don't know how they do it but the transit authority has small fires under the train tracks to keep the rails from freezing.
It took me an hour to get home from work this evening and my office is about four miles away.

It's about as nasty as it gets outside. Its around 0 with a 30 mph wind. I made a cat shelter out of a coleman cooler for a neighborhood stray today. Here's an instructional video ..
I used some straw and blankets for comfort but I ordered a self heating blanket from Amazon for $10 that should arrive soon.
