we've all seen the solo Marty McFly plays and his comment that "you're not ready for that but your kids are going to love it".

Who was the first guy to play like that? I mean, i understand that there were guitar solo's in songs but who was the first guy to play like the example in the movie?

TIA

Well there is a reason why Chuck Berry was the 1st inductee in the rock hall of fame.

i guess i worded the question poorly. I'm more looking for when the tapping, speed, behind the back, amplifier kicking, note sustaining kind of stuff started.

I dunno who would be "first" but Buddy Guy has always mentioned Guitar Slim as a primary influence. T-Bone Walker would be another who did some of that type stuff before Berry.

All those guitar tricks were SOP on the chittlin' circuit long before white crowds saw it; some of the acoustic players were doing it in the 20's and 30's.

In terms of rock guys who got it to a wide audience, I think of Hendrix for the feedback / sustain and crazy showmanship, and Alvin Lee for the SHREDDING.

As far as the movie goes, Michael Fox did the tapping to honor Eddie Van Halen, the kicking of the amp was for Pete Townsend and the rolling around on the stage of course for Angus Young. They were his guitar heroes.

Of course he just did play those songs again with Coldplay in the last few weeks as Chris Martin's son is a huge fan of the movie.
