Warren turns a lump of coal into a diamond here.

Or, Warren plays excellent slide on a beautiful Wilco song, polishing a diamond so that it shines brighter.

To be more fair, the song ("California Stars") is a Woody Guthrie lyric - adapted by Wilco on the "Mermaid Avenue" album that they recorded (with Billy Bragg). For me, the song is always great in any context. I've head them do it with a brass quartet (including the Preservation Hall guys) a couple of times. Warren's touch here - mainly some impromptu slide work, certainly serves the song. But I don't think it makes it into a diamond or anything - as it is a great tune to begin with. Just typical great playing by Warren. 😉

An interesting clip but all we could hear was Warren's contribution. It could have been a lot better if we could have heard Wilco, and Nels' lead guitar as well. It's a cell phone capture so I guess we just have to take what we can get. Thanks for posting it.
