Warren Haynes : “You Got To Move” by Rev. Gary Davis

Thanks for posting, awesome version by Warren, even though he's "cheating". 😉

Great! Thanks for posting.
Would love a accoustic blues album by Warren. Half solo and half with sparse accompaniment.

That is very cool and good. That is a tobacco burst ES-335 or close. Most of those guitars are red or black I understand.
Duane Allman played one just a few times in the ABB. When Duane died Dickey got it so the story goes then later in the 70's gave it to a young Eddy Shaver. Dickey also gave Eddie a mid 1950's Stratocasters Dickey got from Gregg for a old car Dickey had. I'm not completely sure they have all that right. But what is correct is Eddy Shaver fell in love with the old worn Strat Dickey gave him and it was all he played except when he was Dwight Yokum's guitar player and was required to play a Telecaster.
When Eddy died in 2000 of a herion overdose, Willie Nelson got the old Strat and the ES-335 that was Duane's and has them locked in his safe last I heard. But that was several years ago so Willie may not have them now. Eddy Shaver always said Dickey taught him to play and gave him his favorite guitar.

Here is Eddy playing the old 1955 Stratocaster Dickey gave him and at the same time gave him an ES-335 tobaccoburst Duane Allman owned. The story goes Dickey got the 1955 Stratocaster soon after the ABB formed from Gregg. Gregg swapped it for an old car.
BTW Eddy's father Billy Billy Joe is close to Dickey and wrote Georgia On A Fast Train and Sweet Mama which Dickey recorded. Sweet Mama is on Win, Lose or Draw. Closing song.

Thanks for posting this...Warren not only sounds great but looks great too. I haven't seen any recent pics or clips of him and he looks to be significantly healthier to me. Good for him as he's a national treasure in my opinion and so like probably everyone wants him to stay healthy and happy and alive as long as possible.
Question for the guitar aficionados: Are those P90 pickups in that guitar? Whatever they are that guitar sounds incredible in the hands of a master like Warren.

I thought the same thing. Looks like he lost a bunch of weight.

They look like P90s but I'm not that good of a grear head. The ES-335 stock pickups give more of a BB King tone I think.
Warren solo tour in 1992. I caught a show of this tour and Warren autographed his solo album for me.
What kind of pickups on this guitar Warren is playing?

Thanks for posting this link, Blackey....Warren played that strat at a number of the early Allman Brothers gigs I do believe...I have a feeling he used this when they recorded "End of The Line" on the Evening With ABB album as it has that very similar tone we hear in this clip you posted....Just a suspicion of course.
As far as the Pups in that guitar, I'm not knowledgeable enough to say but they're single coils of some sort and they look similar to a Seymour Duncan pickup many players put in strats....Also, they may be similar or the same as the pickup in a few signature strats. Like the early Eric Clapton signature strat from the 1980's....But again, I'm not very knowledgeable about gear and am totally guessing.
The song you posted, "When the Bullets Fly," was written by Warren, correct?

Yes Chain Warren wrote that song with two other men. Gregg Allman recorded it in 1988 for the 1988 Gregg Allman Band album Just Before The Bullets Fly...thus it's the title song. Warren doesn't play on the album.
I found a 1991 interview with Warren Haynes conducted in Japan and he is asked about his guitars and Warren had this guitar built for him by the Fender Custom Shop and asked for a red headstock. It's a very pretty guitar I think.
Warren says the pickups are Eric Clapton lasers.
Chain, around 1993 that guitar and one of the medicine bottles Duane Allman used for slide that was given to Warren were STOLEN apparently right off the stage.
AlPaul mentioned several months ago the guitar was a favorite of Warren so extensive effort was put in including checking with guitar
and music stores and pawn shops but the guitar was never found.
If you see someone playing a red Strat with a red headstock sound the alarm. This guitar has been missing for almost 30 years!!
And what piece of crap would steal from Warren Haynes? He is a great guy and so friendly.

Interesting Blackey....So he did write the tune and those are Eric Clapton signature pups...I wonder if Fender actually made them or they were customized from another manufacturer and then given the name "Eric Clapton Lasers" when customizing the entire guitar? I'm sure some very knowledgeable gear head could tell us....And it sucks that Warren had the guitar stolen. It's amazing as to how many great musicians have had some of their favorite guitars stolen.

Just did more digging and I misunderstood Warren. Warren said Eric Clapton LACE sensor pickups. Designed by a Don Lace. For several years they were used in the Eric Clapton custom signature Fender Stratocaster. The guitar also had a blocked tailpiece with no whammy bar.
Since 2001 the Eric Clapton signature custom comes with Vintage Noiseless single coils. The Lace Sensors were standard from 1988 to 2001. George Blanda and Michael Stevens worked with Clapton at the Fender custom shop. Originally they came in Torino Red ( Warren's) and Pewter Grey Metalic.
Clapton uses Carlos Juan CP-1 pickups on his Martin acoustics.
It also said Clapton has some Stratocasters now with Seymore Duncan pickups.
In the early 60's Clapton used Les Paul or ES-335 guitars with humbucker. In Cream a SG usually . He bought a used Strat in 1967 for 100 dollars and began using it after Cream. (Brownie) He bought 6 more Strats soon afterward for about 100 dollars each all used. Gave 3 away. George Harrison and Pete Townsend got one and apparently made Blackie out of two of the others. Clapton said the more road worn the Strat was the more likely he would buy it. Said it's like seeing an old diner on the highway with lots of cars in the parking lot. It must be good if its been used like that.

Cool info., blackey...Thanks for sharing.

Seems I read that those two guitars of Duane’s Betts gave Eddy Shaver May have perished in a fire at Willie’s studio. Hope I’m off-base but I seem to recall reading that in in interview w Billy Joe after his Long in the Tooth album came out a few years back. Made me sick to my stomach... If that’s not the case, Willie should give those two guitars to Duane Betts. An unbelievable act of kindness and generosity of Dickey to give those two to Eddy. As we’ve seen over and over again...guitars owned and played by the legends fetch ABSURD money. Duane Allman guitars and personal effects in general are worth a fortune. I remember back in 2002 or so...his “big-ring” leather guitar strap made by Zebo in FL was finally un-earthed. Someone took it from Berry’s funeral and had it stored in a coffee can all those years. It sold for over $20,000 on EBay. Duane B. has become close with Shaver lately and has come to understand why Dickey was such a fan of his music. Billy Joe is on my Mt Rushmore of songwriters and is an absolute genius...one tough Texan. Eddy was a flat-out prodigy. He would tear Duane’s strat to pieces...the living definition of firebrand. Like a mix between Billy Gibbons and Danny Gatton. Just a tragic loss. For the uninitiated...seek out Old five and Dimers and Waylon’s Honky Tonk Heroes lp...which Billy Joe almost single-handedly wrote. Billy Joe re-recorded a lot of material when Eddy became of age...thinks its self-titled. Essential. For later-era Shaver...”Tramp on your Street” is a masterpiece and features ol Waylon as well. Billy Joe is getting up there in age...hope I get to see him sing his songs again. ...and if those two beautiful guitars are still around, get em to Duane Betts. He’s deserves em.

Been digging some more. Willie Nelson covered for Eddy Shaver at the Austin gig he was to play when he died of a heroin overdose at age 38. One musician with them that night said he played the 1955 Strat Eddy always played. It was worn real bad, the saddles were rusty, had high action and hard to play but not for Eddy. And Eddy could stretch notes and stay on the beat. A real pro.
Apparently the guitars were destroyed in Willie Nelson's fire but one source says Willie had them locked in his safe.
The two guitars were given to Eddy by Dickey Betts after Dickey spent time showing Eddy things to add to your bag of tricks and tuning etc. The Gibson ES-335 was a tobacco burst owned by Duane Allman and played in the ABB by Duane very sparingly. There are a few black and white pictures of Duane playing it with the ABB. Eddy loved it and took it around with him but rarely played it on stage.
Eddy played the 1955 Fender Stratocaster almost exclusively and apparently Dickey got the old Strat from Gregg Allman years before for an old car Dickey had. I've read that Dickey likes to use a Strat on rhythm guitar in the studio and his son Duane Betts does the same usually with an old 1956 Fender hardtail Dickey acquired used years ago.
It's likely those guitars were destroyed but I hope not. The Gibson should be at the Big House and perhaps the Strat goes to Duane Betts? And Gregg Allman in the early months of the ABB traded that old Stratocaster for an old car Dickey had?? That is an odd story. Hard to believe. And it must not had been much of an automobile.
