"Along with creating the slide-guitar licks that famously fueled what would become its most enduring anthems - "Statesboro Blues," "Jessica," "Whipping Post" - Duane Allman was the source of insight that would make the band superstars."

Written by John Heidt.

How can a professional music writer in a major well known music/guitar magazine screw up the second line of his column that bad?

Got my issue on Monday. Made my day seeing and reading about Duane and the Allman Brothers Band. One article discusses playing Statsboro Blues, In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed, and Whippin' Post. Like I said, it made my day!! Cool

Is this the September 2019 issue? I went online to buy it and looked at the Table Of Contents and saw nothing about Duane. Looks like a big feature on Santana.

I've always enjoyed Duane's contributions to "Jessica". 😉

Lol. But...can you imagine?

But then again it wouldnt have been the same song because Les Dudek's contribution would not have even been created. Fun to try to imagine it though.

Les Dudek plays acoustic guitar on Jessica and Duane doesn't appear on the track or album of course. Apparently, to me at least, saying Duane created the slide guitar licks that lead to Whipping Post is a mistake too because Duane didnt play slide guitar on Whipping Post.

"Source of insight" ?

I've never heard of a musician described that way before

Not sure that requires playing on cuts. Or even ... Anything.

Yes Steved Dickey was stuck on the piece. Dickey was watching his daughter Jessica playing in the room and according to Dickey, little Jessica was playing with cigarette butts and beer cans and Dickey found the melody line by watching his daughter Jessica. But he was stuck on how to get the piece to the next part and played Les the melody and Les suddenly realised how the bridge should or could go and Dickey liked it and used the bridge that Les came up with.. Dickey invited Les to record the twin harmony lead guitar with him on Ramblin' Man and Phil Walden liked Les and how he played and Les was a very good slide player too but Dickey plays the solos and the slide on Ramblin' Man.

But Gregg and Butch caught wind that Les was saying he got the gig, he was taking Duane's place in the band ( apparently Dickey and Phil didn't actually offer Les the job but Les thought it was coming) so Gregg and Butch were angered and absolutely opposed to Les or any guitar player taking Duane's place. Chuck Leavell had already joined the band and Chuck could do solos opposite Dickey. So Les wanted out of his contract and Phil Walden obliged. Dickey told Phil Les had helped him on Jessica but Phil did not add Les to the writing credits after his contract with Capricorn was canceled.

In recent years Chuck Leavell said he also came up with some of the finishing touches of Jessica but it was Dickey's song as Dickey came up with the basic cords and melody line and Chuck felt he and Les contributed to the arrangement of the song and Dickey was the writer. So it isn't clear Les co wrote Jessica.

On another song writing dispute, Butch was upset about getting nothing while Gregg and Dickey earned over a million dollars each on a 1991 package of tracks from the early albums plus Crazy Love from Enlighten Rogues that sold over 2 million copies. Butch posted here back then his displeasure and complained he wrote the drum part for Elizabeth Reed and should have gotten a writing credit. He said he complained to Duane and Duane sides with Dickey that Dickey wrote the song and the rest of the band came up with the arrangement. Butch did admit though Gregg is the only writer on Whipping Post while Berry Oakley wrote the opening bass line and Butch changed the time signature of the song. Indeed Whipping Post was almost a slow ballad when Gregg showed it to the band and Gregg didnt really like all the changes the band did to it.

I can recall being at a NYE party at a friend's house in the S.F. bay Area in Dec of '73. Some of us were out in the garage near the keg listening to the KSAN broadcast from the Cow Palace (we all went the next night 1-1-74) and the Jockeys were all excited and were talking about tonight being the night that Dudek would be introduced to the crowd as a new member. They went "Live", Bill Graham was there and.... no mention of Les at all....
