Van and I long ago went our separate ways musically but I can only say "Amen!" to this:

"It’s ironic that R&B, once corralled into a racially segregated sub-genre of popular music, has now become an all-conquering global force. Morrison, however, sees nothing to cheer about. 'Terrible,' is his blunt assessment of the modern-day descendants of the musicians who inspired him in his youth.

'I can’t relate to it now, what they call R&B. It doesn’t have any rhythm in it,' he says. 'It doesn’t have any blues. To me it is very unrhythmic. It’s very robotic. Words take on different meanings after a while. It’s like soul. I don’t know what that is now. To me, soul was like Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Bobby Bland, Solomon Burke, Bobby Womack. But what is it now? It is just a word. It can mean anything. What is jazz? Some of the stuff that they say is jazz, I don’t know what it is. Blues also. [Some people think] blues started with Jimi Hendrix. So the jumping off place was really loud guitar and feedback. To me that’s not the blues. Blues is like Junior Wells and Buddy Guy in a club, live.' ”

This is exactly how I feel about the ABB being referred to as "Southern rock".

Like many musical artists and entertainers, Mr. Morrison takes himself way too seriously.

Music evolves and changes. Rock today isn't what it was in the 60's and 70's. Expecting musicians to be the same today as they were back whenever is futile. Think about the ABB. They succeeded because they thought outside the box and melded blues rock and jazz in ways it hadn't been done before. Others followed their own muse. Sometimes change is good, sometimes it isn't. But if it stayed the same it would be boring. Even Van has done it whether he realizes or not. He doesn't like to sing his old songs in concert, preferring whatever his later music. And yes, he can be grumpy. Cool
