Randy Poe's research in his excellent book Skydog, said that on Aug. 3 1969 at their 1st session in NYC for the first album, "the band took a shot at Dreams, which they had already recorded as a demo at the new Capricorn Studios back in April. The band wasn't happy with the version they cut Aug. 3 so they decided to set it aside for the moment."

So this would've been the second version -- then nine days later, "...they returned to the studio one last time on Aug. 12 to try once more to capture Dreams. This time it all came together."

That's why I wonder if there might be an unreleased version -- maybe tapes weren't rolling at the Aug. 3 session, or maybe they just dumped them being unhappy with the performance -- of course the April demo was one of the treasures of the 1989 box set of the same name -- just as Berry's playing was included on Little Martha, Dickey's was on Dreams

books are like music, you pick up bits & pieces of new info during multiple reads -- peace

Hadn't known until Gregg's book came out that Dickey was not present on Dreams we all know-&-love -- Gregg said in his book that "Dickey Betts is not on the recording of Dreams...Duane played all the guitar you hear on Dreams..."

the April 1969 demo version w/Dickey is quite different from what came out w/just the 5 of them on the 1st album -- Dickey's use of the wah wah pedal is real nice -- in Randy's book there's a photo of the band playing April 1969 at Piedmont Park, right around the time the demo was recorded, & there's the pedal, right at Dickey's feet
the congas are more up front to good effect too in the 4:52 demo version of Dreams (album version is 7:18)

seems real surprising Dickey's absence from this masterpiece of the ABB catalog was never known prior to Gregg's book -- all releases credit him still as being on the session...
