I've watched this twice now -- all 33 minutes each time and am so impressed with how they pulled this off.
Trey locks onto Derek from the beginning to end. I know Trey gets his playing energy from others but this was like watching an onstage bro-crush. Derek at times was like stand back while he unleashed his fury. I'm sure I'm reading too far into this.....
Is Susan even playing? At one point she holds her guitar up to her ear as if to see if it's even making any noise.
Hot damn if the Allmans were still playing where Derek and crew could've taken MJ!

such an incredible move by Derek and Susan to ask Trey to sit in with them, truly a fitting exclamation point on their finest run yet at the Beacon (imo). But seeing Trey and Derek go back and forth on mountain jam makes me a little sad that Derek doesn't have a true guitar sidekick to push him like this often enough. Maybe it's just not his vision, but he needs to find his Dickey Betts, so to speak...seeing him wail on Delta Lady is the perfect example of the little that TTB is missing. Still the greatest show out there today.

Jimmy Herring, Eric Krasno, that Warren Haynes guy - he's done great things with other guitar players. He's just not looking to re-create the Allman Brothers and have a band with two full-time soloists.

TTB isn't missing a thing to my ears. Derek did the twin-lead Allman Brothers thing for 14 years, and Susan can more than hold her own on the type of soul that they do better than anyone. Another guitarist onstage as a guest is nice once in a while, but I can see 3 guitars become too much real fast. I'm glad TTB isn't just a guitar band, for a 12 piece, there is a lot of air in the conversation.
Listening to The Storm > Whipping Post from 10/11 right now. Second time today. Derek doesn't seem to need any help on this tour de force.
Oh I didn't mean to slight TTB or any of the Brothers Derek has played with over the years. And I aagree adding another fulll time member to a 12 piece powerhouse would probably be too much. All valid points though, I guess more of what I was trying to say is a that it seems something extra gets pulled from Derek during those Jams, and selfishly want more of it. His vision of TTB has reached new heights recently, just getting started hopefully

I appreciate the link and need to give it a watch. I flew in for this one and only show with my 14 year old son (he enjoyed it but I could tell his attention span was a bit stretched!). Nonetheless it was over the top. New York crowd was practically giddy at having Trey make an appearance.
I agree that Derek does his best work when pushed by another guitarist. To me, the one he really clicks with for some wild moments is Jimmy Herring. A few years back when the Allman's toured with the Panic, Derek stepped in to do Maggot Brain and it was one of the most surreal jams I've ever heard. I imagine Jimmy taught Derek a few things as a youngster when he was being mentored by Col. Bruce during the ARU days.

It's gone both ways! But I agree they have a connection that goes above and beyond Derek's playing with anyone else. He and Jimmy have such opposite stylistic backgrounds in a lot of ways and somehow they end up sounding so similar at times. They really get each other.

Totally true. And I think all of us love how he plays with other guitarists. It's just that we have 20-something years' worth of evidence that the dual-soloist thing isn't something he wants to do full time, so I wouldn't say he wants or needs to find anything he hasn't found.
I agree that this is a fantastic guest appearance, but that's all it could ever be. Trey has two bands, he's not joining TTB any time soon even if that were on the table, and I'm sure it's not. Look at the glass half full, that is part of what makes this so special.
Among other things, this is EASILY the best I've ever heard Trey and Derek play together. I've seen Derek sit in with Phish, I've seen Trey sit in with the ABB, but this is the best collaboration yet between two of my very favorite musicians.

Agree with this ---- and RobJohnson I don't take your comment as blasphemy at all.
MJ got a little too stale and formulaic under Derek/Warren so the freshness of this version feels even fuller.

Loved it! It's a lot different than watching/ hearing Derek and Warren playing.
Trey plays more off of Derek whereas Derek and Warren seem to trade punches to me, which I love but this is more of a subtle communication between two guitarists.
I'll need to watch some of Derek and Jimmy playing Mountain Jam.

By the way, a good recording of this has shown up on Archive.org. We have all enjoyed watching the video, but for pure sound quality, this is light years ahead. Go ahead and wrap your ears around this, it's like hearing it for the first time....
On to our next topic, Derek played with Phish on 7/7/1999 in Charlotte on Funky Bitch and Possum. If you know those tunes, you can imagine how well Derek fits in on them. Pure Southern grease! Go get 'em Derek!

Thank you so much for pointing this out. unreal sound, so pure like you said. this is a treasure, especially how you can really hear the harmonies between Derek and Trey so much better with this recording. Blew me away even after hearing this show many times already. thx again, brother.

I don’t remember of any versions without Duane that had the “lullaby” section at the end, but I haven’t heard all of the Derek - Jimmy versions or the older Derek - Warren versions

I promise I'll stop obsessing over this eventually, but I just wanted to throw in one more compliment to this fantastic version. In a word: Dynamics.
There are several times in this version where the band is in full peak frenzy, then dials it all the way back down to zero. Then they climb the mountain again, rinse and repeat, etc.
It's a simple trick, really, but so few bands really use it to its full potential. Derek has always had a good grasp of the important of space, of knowing when not to play. TTB has gotten very tight and intuitive about following Derek's lead, but I was impressed to see how well Trey followed along.
That mind-blowing peak around the 26 minute mark just doesn't have that OOMPH without the fact that it rises out of a relatively quiet section. The whole 5 minutes or so from minutes 22-27 is like a great musical roller coaster, and I never want to get off!
Ok, I finally had the chance to watch. A half hour video is a commitment!!
Well worth it. Epic. I have huge respect for Trey listening so intently to Derek and playing off Derek perfectly. Good ears, very sympathetic playing. Communication.
It may be the longest TTB song I've seen. Does TTB do Mtn Jam or half hour songs much? I've seen them do epics, 15-18 minutes, but often medleys.

agreed - I would extend that to the end of the bass solo to the end of the tune.
The part I was referring to in my last post begins around 27:00 on the vid. Duane did that section - I haven't heard it since.
