I was pretty psyched to watch last night's broadcast. I had attended the final night of that last Beacon run, the Saturday 10/5 show. The band really laid it all out; it was killer; some pals told me that the night before had been more mellow, especially the first set. I was eager to see how it was.

What I now think is the deal is that the Friday night show first set went very heavy on TTB originals, which are less well-known than their Dominoes covers etc. It was a terrific concert, and it was cool to see a lot of different stuff. I really like to hear their own songs.

Set 1:
1. All That I Need
2. Signs, High Times
3. Until You Remember
4. Simple Things
5. Learn How to Love
6. Life Is Crazy (Mike Mattison cover - is it really a cover then?!)
7. Darlin' Be Home Soon (The Lovin’ Spoonful cover)
8. Still Your Mind
9. More and More (Little Milton cover)

Set 2:
10. Strengthen What Remains
11. Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning (Blind Willie Johnson cover)
12. I Am Yours (Derek and the Dominos cover)
13. Done Somebody Wrong (ABB / Elmore James cover)
14. It Hurts Me Too (Tampa Red cover) (Last time played 10/7/2016)
15. I Walk on Gilded Splinters (Dr. John cover)
16. Bound for Glory
17. Keep On Growing (Derek and the Dominos cover)
18. I Pity the Fool (Bobby “Blue” Bland cover)
19. I Want More

Encore:
20. Sing a Simple Song (Sly & the Family Stone cover) (>) I Want to Take You Higher (Sly cover)

This bothers me more than it should, which is none, because it's not important at all. But I don't think this is a cover! Mike wrote Life Is Crazy, the Derek Trucks Band played it regularly for a few years, Mike included it on his solo album, and now Mike and Derek perform it with TTB. When Paul McCartney plays Let It Be with his band, is he covering the Beatles or just playing a song he wrote? I think it's the second one. But there isn't an exact term for playing your own song with a different group than the one that first performed it, so people say it's a cover. Life goes on.

Yeah Marley, I had copied that setlist from setlists.fm or whatever the site is called.

They also refer to "Done Somebody Wrong" as an Elmore James cover, and I couldn't resist typing in "ABB" there.

Yes. And the TTB plays the Allmans’ arrangement of it.

Are the TTB’s and Phil Ochs’ Bound for Glory one & the same? Now what a cover That would be - is this title often in their set lists?

Yes it's a gray area. When Paul McCartney plays Let It Be I'm sure he knows the audience thinks he is going back to his time with the Beatles. So it's a yes and no thing.

When Gregg Allman played Midnight Rider in his band and it's arranged like Laid Back, he is playing a Gregg Allman song? I think so. Gregg said he put several of his songs the ABB did on his solo records so he could play them closer to how he wrote them. Gregg and Dickey both said when Gregg showed Whipping Post to the band, it was a slow ballad. And Gregg wasn't that excited about how Berry and Butch and eventually the rest of the band changed it so much.

TTB should change their name to Derek and The Dominos. Derek Trucks was named for that band by his dad.

Yes, I know. I wasn't yelling at you, I was yammering on about something that bugs me. I also think the way they display these lists at sites like setlists is just painfully cluttered. When I'm scanning a setlist I don't need to know who wrote the song (it's usually something everyone knows anyway) and I don't need to see the last time it was played. Stick that in a notes section at the bottom!

TTB should change their name to Derek and The Dominos. Derek Trucks was named for that band by his dad.

That would be expensive and confusing to fans. But Derek's first band was called Derek and the Dominators.
