Ask me again next week - get five different answers! 😉

Cant name 5 ...to many in my book.
I like this little bass line/solo the late great Paul Goddard laid down
starting around the 2:45 mark it kicks in just after that.
ARS-Champagne Jam
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

I like
1 - Jack Bruce
2 - John Entwistle
3 - Jack Cassidy
4 - James Jamerson

thx for that jszfunk, always liked that one but sure hadn’t known about that bass part - a little like the bass solo in Free’s Alright Now in a way - Roger Glover’s on Pictures of Home, and Tommy Caldwell’s on the live 24 Hrs At A Time come to mind too, crusher short-bass solos
the slide playing at the end of CJam too - they played at Jimmy Carter’s inaugural IIRC?

Tony Levin
Chris Squire
Jaco Pastorious
John Entwhistle
Stanley Clarke

best is always subjective. but here are 5 of my favorites!
George porter junior. oh man, does he lay down the groove.
Andy hess. goodness. so versatile. his work with Steve knock - tasty.
Gerald jemmott - king Curtis groover master
Oteil: when Derek Trucks calls you the Michael Jordan of the bass, you've done something good
todd smallie! completely underrated. dude was and is a monster.

No order:
James Jamerson
Nathan East
Oteil Burbridge
Tal Wilkenfeld
Carol Kaye

1.Paul McCartney
2. Jack Bruce
3.Felix Pappalardi
4. Chris Squire
5. John Entwhistle

They’re the ones I’d have on there too
BO & the Ox, 6 mentions each, no surprise
Oteil & Paul, 4 each, Phil L, 3
For grins I’d mention the late great Greg Lake, his playing on those early ELP records is stupendous

1. Oteil Burbridge the best bassist ABB ever had. Yes I mean EVER.
2. Mel Schacher - Grand Funk Railroad
Have you think about the rest.

He never gets mentioned much on lists like this but Noel Redding added tremendously to Hendrix' sound. Anyone playing in a band with Jimi is going to be overlooked. Mitch Mitchell is often left off of best drummer lists for the same reason.

NOT IN ANY ORDER
1.Jaco
2.Charles Mingus
3.Ron Carter
4.John Entwistle
5.Bootsy Collins...

In no particular order, these are some of my favorites.
Paul McCartney
James Jamerson
Tower of Power's Rocco Prestia
Oakley
Paul Goddard
The late Paul Goddard just killed it with his tone. He would sap the 250 hz to "stay out of JR and Berry's territory" and it mixed so sweetly. This is an obscure ARS tune, but check out Mr. Goddard's hidden gem starting right around the 3:00 mark.

i'd say
jack bruce
the ox
billy sheehan
mccartney
glover

Donald "Duck "Dunn
Jerry Jemmott
Raymond Berry Oakley l l l
Jack Cassady
Jack Bruce

No order:
Jaco
James Jamerson
Duck Dunn
George Porter Jr.
Charles Mingus

My favorites:
Geezer Butler
Jack Bruce
John Entwistle
Boz Burrell
John Paul Jones
I will add a 6th to my list: Billy Sheehan

I don't think I've ever narrowed it down to five. Here's the first half of my top ten that I thought of:
Familyman Barrett
Berry Oakley
Oteil Burbridge
Colin Greenwood
Tina Weymouth
