Top 25 Southern Rock Albums

Not sure if you saw it, but Ultimate Classic Rock have compiled their top 25 Southern Rock Albums. I definitely agree with the #1 choice. Here's what they included:
25. Georgia Satellites - Georgia Satellites
24. Wet Willie - Keep On Smilin’
23. Gregg Allman - Laid Back
22. Kentucky Headhunters - Pickin’ On Nashville
21. Black Oak Arkansas - High On The Hog
20. Gov’t Mule - Dose
19. Blackfoot - Strikes
18. Jason Isbell - Southeastern
17. Molly Hatchet - Molly Hatchet
16. The Black Crowes - The Southern Harmony & Musical Companion
15. Johnny Winter - Johnny Winter And
14. Marshall Tucker Band - Marshall Tucker Band
13. Molly Hatchet - Flirtin’ With Disaster
12. The Black Crowes - Shake Your Money Maker
11. Allman Brothers Band - Allman Brothers Band
10. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Street Survivors
09. Drive By Truckers - Southern Rock Opera
08. Allman Brothers Band - Idlewild South
07. ZZ Top - Tres Hombres
06. Allman Brothers Band - Brothers & Sisters
05. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Second Helping
04. Drive By Truckers - Decoration Day
03. Allman Brothers Band - Eat A Peach
02. Lynyrd Skynyrd - (Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd)
01. Allman Brothers Band - At Fillmore East

Gimme Back My Bullets always gets a bad rap - easily my favorite LS.
I'd say bump Drive By Truckers - and get Atlanta Rythym Section on there, boot Black Crows, they aren't Southern Rock they are a Stones clone - and make some space for Dixie Dregs.

I also would've included The Outlaws.

Hands down the 1st 2 albums by each of the MTB, Outlaws, & Skynyrd. To have neither of the Outlaws dics and Skynyrds Second Helping makes the list flawed right off the bat.

Gimme Back is a solid record with a bad rap. I agree with the additions but tossing the Crowe’s? Drive By? We just gotta make more room. AND, Elvis is southern rock.

Cool they recognized Mule on there. And a Wet Willie nod
Atlanta Rhythm Section
Sea Level
Delaney & Bonnie
Amazing Rhythm Aces
Blackberry Smoke
Widespread Panic (Light Fuse, Get Away)
Little Feat in my mind should have a couple albums on there, I guess because they weren't all from the South... but Dixie Chicken is a southern staple (Doobie Bros probably fall in this category too...and maybe CCR
Pure Prairie League
Elvin Bishop
Dickie Betts and Great Southern
Ozark Mountain Daredevils
Charlie Daniels Band
The Radiators
SRV could technically count
Most these groups had an album worthy of being on this list

Fretsman, Second Helping is #5 on the list.

I'm a dummy and that makes me flawed right off the bat.

Not a bad list at all and I agree with a lot of it. Funny though, I can't agree with the #1. Not that Fillmore East isn't an incredible, CLASSIC, record! It is, in every way. It's just that it's not Southern Rock. It got #1 because it's an incredible record by a band from the South. I can hear elements of Southern Rock in Eat A Peach, Idlewild South, and Brothers and Sisters. Fillmore East? It is strictly a blues and jazz record. I don't call that Southern Rock. But it is SO great that it earned a spot in the Library of Congress. Just my opinion........
I'm glad somebody saw fit to put The Black Crowes' Southern Harmony and Musical Companion in there. Always loved that record!! And yeah, I call it Southern Rock. Also, I think Gregg's Laid Back could easily take the #1 slot..........a top 5 selection, minimum. At least they included it, but putting Black Oak Arkansas ahead of Laid Back is some kind of joke............

Question:
"What about Stormy Monday, Hot 'lanta, IMOER, Done Somebody Wrong & Statesboro Blues, sounds even remotely like Skynyrd, hatchet, 38. special and other 'Southern rock bands'"?
Gregg Allman on "Southern Rock"

" putting Black Oak Arkansas ahead of Laid Back is some kind of joke............ "
Damn right!!!!!!

Not that I don't love Fillmore but not sure I would say it is the best.
If you really listen to Southern Rock Opera, definitely including the lyrics, it should be there if not nigher.
Georgia Satellites were freaking awesome.
I don't think Dose by Mule is Southern Rock. Awesome album! But southern rock? Not to my ears.
And while many people on this site can't stand him, I would think something by Charlie Daniels should be on that list.

agree that I'm not sure what Southern Rock is but...
off the top of my head, the big omissions are The Outlaws (1st album) and CDB Fire on the Mountain

First off, Top xx Lists are like you know what, everybody's got one. But they do spark good conversation and debate so I like em.
Outlaws first album and CDB's Fire on the Mountain should be on there. Really love Second Helping, even more than the first album. Rio Grande Mud should make the list too. Also, Searchin' for a Rainbow by the MTB.

Southern Rock - how do we define is the key.
As much as I love the multiple guitars, dual drums and blues, the genra is more complex than that.
Adding singer songwriters to the definition is difficult as some of my favorite ABB songs were brilliant covers but
relevant. I see little mention/credit to 38 Special & Molly Hatchet. Outlaws first album is a must on the list.

It's just great music to me. I don't really like alot of these labels like southern rock, etc. I listen to alot of different music, and it's all good to me.

CDB's Fire on the Mountain should be on there.
"No Place to go"

CDB Fire on the mountain is one of my all-time favorites! Brother Dickey plays on that album. I always thought "No place left to go" would be a good cover song for the ABB.

Fire On The Mountain x 100
Loved early CDB as much as I dislike older CDB
List needs more Tucker and no ABB-Fillmore East

What no SRV? Can I substitute No. 13 for SRV Texas Flood?

We'll its floodin' down in Texas

My 3 cents:
I'd limit it to one record per group. I'd also nix Johnny Winter and ZZ Top as they don't fit into my definition of "southern" rock--if they did then Tom Petty would be on the list. I'd definitely add Little Feat to the top 3. I'd put CDB Fire on the Mountain, but down toward the bottom. Outlaws should be in top 5.

Just for the sake of conversation, Johnny Winter played the blues - So did the Brothers. ZZ top were/are formed in the South, so were the Brothers. Tom Petty & The Outlaws are from Florida - So Is Dickey, Little Feat was from Hollywood, Ca.
How do you define "Southern Rock"?

How do you define "Southern Rock"?
Fair question.
I don't look at it as "where you are from" but more of a specific sound. I think it stems from me living in NC and traveling the country. Example: Georgia, NC, SC, are "the south" but I don't consider Palm Beach, Miami, etc "the south", nor do I consider San Diego "the south". Likewise, heavy blues such as ZZ Top and Winter and all the Delta blues, for that matter, don't enter my lexicon as "southern rock" Some ABB does, as does MTB, CDB, Hatchet, Blackfoot, Henry Paul, DBT, and yes, Little Feat.
Like how I consider The Band as Americana music, even though they're almost all from Canada, lol! Hope that helps. And yes, I realize this might not be the majorities view, but just mine. I'm ok with that...

Wondered when someone would bring them up. Could be wrong but I think only one wasn't from Canada. Sure sounds like Southern Rock to me. Levon could bring it.

I see all the debates about who qualifies and who doesn't regarding Southern Rock but no mention of Gov't Mule. I would say they are the least southern band on the list. If Warren didn't play for the Brothers I doubt anyone would think of them as a part of this genre
