Man, this one just hurts more than the others we've lost in 2023.

I've seen Tommy play - chatted with him on many occasions.  He always struck me as one of the most genuine people you could ever meet.  If he had any sense of super star ego it was dwarfed by his talent.  He seemed modest and had a great sense of humor.  I once told him that his album, "Someone Else's Shoes" was one of my favorites by anybody - ever!  He thanked me and said, "I need to hear that kind of talk!"

I think I'll cue up some Cowboy ... Capricorn Rhythm Section ...  any of Tommy's solo stuff .  Sad day.  Go find Scott in music heaven and jam.

Yes it is a sad day - his soaring Dreams solo on the Gregg Allman Tour album - an orchestra was a natural to have on Dreams & Tommy’s solo shines, as does the whole song - always wanted to hear more of his post-Cowboy stuff, will look up that album Rusty

RIP Mr. Tommy Talton

Very sorry to hear this. Always such a tasteful and fluid player. Very sad indeed.

Talton

Tommy was so good with Cowboy, both in the 70s and when he reunited in the 2000s for shows with Scott Boyer.  I was lucky to see him play many times over the last 20 years in Macon and Atlanta.  Once, he played one of the musical BBQ joints in historic Roswell with Randall Bramblett and I couldn't believe we got to see that level of talent, musicianship and songwriting in a small restaurant/music hall.    Another memorable one was a Cowboy show at Smith's Olde Bar in Atlanta 15 years ago.  I last saw him at City Winery in July still as smooth as ever on the guitar (playing with Alan Paul & End of the Line band).

Met Tommy multiple times through mutual friends.  He came to my Georgian Terrace TTB preshow gathering back in 2017.   And here was a world class talent just being one of the folks.

He was one of those that was held in highest esteem by other musicians.  Talented people wanted to play with him.  Everyone always had nice things to say about Tommy the person.

Joe Bell shared video from Capricorn studios in early October, 2.5 months ago, of Tommy recording his final album, with the help of Chuck L and Randall B.   He's practicing one song on acoustic & singing, while Chuck plays grand piano next to him and it's an absolutely gorgeous melancholy melody & chord changes.   I only wish I could ever write one song that beautiful.   I will have to track down the finished product for sure.

RIP to a good soul and talented man!

From Warren Haynes:

RIP Tommy Talton

Today we lost a brother. Aside from being an amazingly talented musician and songwriter, he was a special, beautiful human being. He was family. Although Tommy remained behind the scenes for most of his career, the scenes he was behind were some amazing ones. His history and association with the Allman Brothers Band goes back to the very beginning- long before my time- and although I knew his work with Cowboy and the many recording sessions he was part of, I didn’t get to know him until the past twenty-five years or so. We shared the stage many, many times- and shared twice as many stories- and each time I would walk away having learned something I didn’t already know. Tommy was one of those rare musicians who cut through to the truth- what music really means and what it can be as a healing, nurturing tool in life. Every note mattered, every word mattered- but not in a pretentious way- in the truest way that mattered to him, whether or not people could tell the difference. He also continued to write and record some of the finest music of his life in most recent years. I remember Derek Trucks telling me that hearing Tommy playing slide guitar- live on stage when he was 9 years old- was a life-changing experience for him that helped shape his future and I know he was able to share that story with Tommy. My most favorite moment playing with Tommy would be a few years ago when Gov’t Mule played in Macon and we got lost in some magical improvisation that was indicative of his approach to music- and to life for that matter- living for the moment. Tommy was one of those guys who was always holding more cards than he played. Love you TT. - WH

Wow I saw Tommy several times solo, with Cowboy and two amazing shows in 1974 with Gregg Allman on his Laid Back tour.

Duane Allman loved him and Cowboy and in more recent years I read comments of praise from Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks and both praised his slide guitar ability

Sad news. RIP Tommy.

I saw two shows I believe fall of 1974 of the Gregg/Cowboy tour. One was in the Felt Forum at MSG. The next night was at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, N.J. Place was a dive but a serious party palace. What good fortune I had back then as a teenager to see such great music. Thanks Tommy.

Great performance by Tommy and band - which contains two of my Birmingham home-boys: David Keith (drums) and Brandon Peeples (bass).  Tommy always surrounded himself with the best players.  Whenever I saw Tommy - or his Cowboy bandmate, Randall Bramblett - I always walked away wondering, "how come these guys ain't famous ... and why ain't most of the famous pop-stars pumping gas?"  I'll miss Tommy Talton for the rest of my days.
