A musical avenue I rarely travel that was a pleasant ride on Saturday. A friend of mine was playing in Teaneck and I jumped in on this night. Starz has been around for decades and Tokyo Motor Fist is some seasoned Gents soon to put out a follow up disc the their 2017 debut. I took no still pic's, but here's a coup[le vid's and links.

I tried to get into them a few years ago, just did not catch me. Maybe I will try again.
If you are looking for another band with"motor" in the title, these guys are pretty good.

Steve Brown mentioned that he has 5 new songs for the band and they've received record company backing to support a new disc scheduled for a possible late June release.

This is kind of fascinating to me because I watched the first couple TMF videos and thought they were horrible, cheesy almost to the point of a parody. I am not questioning anyone's taste, because taste is taste but it's fascinating to me that people who love the Allman Brothers like this stuff. Fretsman, I have the greatest respect for your passion and am mostly in sync with your taste - which is why it's so interesting to me. I hope this comes across in the spirit I intend.

It's all good. I started out with it's a musical road I rarely travel. I have a friend who was in the opening band and wanted to support them and I try to capture a musical moment in time. I dabble and keep an open ear and respect musicians who follow their dreams and try to make it happen.

I am a lover of most music and can find some good in most offerings. My high school years were in the late 70's and I'm anchored by classic and southern rock. When Skynyrd's plane went down I was all in. I laugh as I'm recalling Charlie Daniels song The South's Gonna Do It Again and how as a teenager I had to hear all the bands mentioned in the song. Elvin Bishop, Wet Willie, Grinderswitch, etc.

When things went glam and the MTV era arose It was a big turn off for me. I went towards blues and later folk music focusing on the guitar and writing, tho some folk was drab there was a deeper beauty. The 80's was a bad decade except for some revitalized southern and blues. I'm not a pop rock guy, I can't listen to synthesizer music. When the whole music world had men with women's hair that took them longer to get ready for a show than it took for the show itself I was out. Ozzy was swearing every other word, but I saw the beauty in Mr. Rhoads, but Cinderella, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, and the like unbearable. With all the crotch grabbing, sexual innuendo, and BS it was obvious I wasn't their target audience.

A lot of music is hooks and riffs, some are childish and goofy, and some are cool and fun. There's not much that hasn't been done, a lot is recycled riffs. It's rare to hear anything really ground breaking anymore. There is beauty in simplicity and undeniable talent, but it's rare to have my head grabbed by the speakers anymore.

I'm about to retire later this year. When my 2 kids are ready to launch I'll be downsizing and most likely moving down to a nice musical area like Sarasota to unwind n my final years. I have some friends and family there and the music scene suits me rather nicely.

While this show isn't in my musical wheelouse, I've seen some folks who are younger and appreciate it. I can hear what both Richie Ranno and Steve Brown are saying with their guitars. While I'm still in the tri state area I intend to document musical moments in time to capture whatever can be heard to each individuals ear. I am going to see Ryan Montbleau tonight as he's at one of my fav venues and I heard a little something in a couple videos. I drive my wife and concert buddy nuts with some of my ventures, but she gets me. I'm lucky to have found her.

I have an ongoing project in a flash drive that's got over 2,500 songs on it. It's only got the best of the best on it. To make it on the flash drive it needs to meet the criteria of "listenable to on a regular basis". I add some tunes from time to time from bands that excite me, but most of what I venture to attend doesn't meet that standard.

May the musicians of the world keep striving to get the sounds they hear in their heads out on vinyl and may it sound as good to us as it sounds to them.
