Today is the 41st anniversary of the sinking in Lake Superior. Listening to Gordon Lightfoot's beautiful song. They rang the bell 29 times at Mariner's Church in Detroit this morning for all of the men who lost their lives. God rest their souls.

That's nice. Never heard it. He sounds much like Gordon. Smile

Tony is a big Gordon Lightfoot fan and has covered a bunch of his songs. I wouldn't have even known about the song if it weren't for Tony's version.

There is a compilation album of all his Lightfoot covers:

I remember vividly being at a Boy Scout meeting, it was snowing out, one of our leaders came in the church hall shaking the snow off his coat, said he just heard on the radio that they lost contact with a freighter on the lake.

Tony Rice is an incredible musician. Glad to see him getting some love here. However, unless you were born after the fact, it would be impossible not to remember the Lightfoot version. They must have played it twice an hour for years on the radio. TWOTEF is one of those songs that require strength, stamina and sincerity to get through the singing and playing of it. I know I'd lose interest 1/4 to the way into it. God bless the souls of those who lost their life. It seems unfair that other American tragedies don't have a cool theme song. 🙁

Yeah, I must have been born after the fact. But I do love Tony Rice. I went through a stage a few years back where I was really heavy in to bluegrass. That was when I discovered Tony...both his solo work and his work with The Bluegrass Album Band, Jerry Garcia, etc. Amazing guitar player....maybe the best in that genre.

Sad event - and truly great song in tribute. What is really incredible is that Lightfoot managed to hit #2 on the pop charts with what is essentially a long drawn out folk ballad, probably the only time in pop music history that has happened.

It seems unfair that other American tragedies don't have a cool theme song.

There are plenty! Not chart toppers, but lots of American history is covered in ballad form. Seems like a great thread idea . . .
